Sam, Great shots…all of them! You say they are not Photographiclly brilliant…hell they are! They show a journey from one side of the world to another in images, I think they are photgraphically brilliant.
Well done.

E3D image is simply awesome….great work.

Great shots, great location. I love the MD and the heat haze from the engines really gives a sense of power.
Well done

Adam,
Have to agree with Paul, that is one great shot. I was at LHR yesterday also and if I had taken any shot close to what you have produced I would be very happy.
Well done.

I dont know much at all about helos, but Ive always called a helicopter that looked like that, a Sea King.
Ive just looked on airliners.net and on there the type of helicopter that I saw is classed as a Westland Sea King HC4. So other than that, I dont know.
There are a few variants of the Seaking currently in service:
HU5=Helicopter Utility; SAR version in RN Service.
HAR=Helicopter Air Rescue; SAR version in RAF Service.
HC=Helicopter Commando; Commando version in Service with the RN.
Mk7 ASAC= Airborne Surveillance and Area Control; AEW version in Service with the RN.
There is also a Commando version in Service with the RN which is a converted HAS6 (Helicopter Anti Submarine) which has been converted by having the ASW kit stripped out, making it a lot lighter. Also more seats, new radio equipment fitted, a troop step and new counter measures equipment fitted. It is know as the HAS(CR) CR standing for Commando Role.
The aircraft at LHR yesterday were HC versions from the mighty 848 Naval Air Squadron.
hope this helps

As we say in the Fleet Air Arm: Royal Navy by Choice…Fleet Air Arm by the Grace of God.
Thanks guys for your kind words and advice. I am using the built in RAW converter in CS2 to do the initial work, then finishing off in CS2. Again, I think it is like most new things it is a case of getting usd to the new format and gradually the skill of processing will naturally flow. I have a few magazine articles and a tutorial from Practical Photography which will be useful. I found the ESSO station by pure chance as I had parked my car beside a pub a little further up the runway. A very nice taxi driver who was on his break walked me down to the garage. Met a few newspaper photographers (mail and Mirror) who were waiting for the BMED to land from Tehran; again very helpful in showing me different settings on the camera for different situations etc.
James, I never actually saw the 320 landing but as it apprached the departure frequency took it and told the other aircraft that were holding for departure that they would need to wait as an aircraft had called a PAN (emergency) and it would be landing on 27L, it was the BEMED 320. Never found out why this was the case but it landed fine and the Seakings lifted some 30 minutes later.
Paul, Ian once again, thanks for the great advice; I will keep at it.

Absolutely, Brother Ian. Especially the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, fresh water system, and public health…….
And Viaducts don’t forget the viaducts….anyone for a badgers nose? 😉

I suspect that if this transcription of the incident is the case then CRM will be at the forefront of training again. Having completed a CRM course last year as part of a bi annual flight safety course this would be a great example to use on cross cockpit procedures and experience over hours. On my course we used the example of the Korean 744 incident landing at Guam; almost the same senario (experience that is) as the Garuda incident in that Captain was a highly experienced 744 pilot with many many hours and the First Officer was just from training. The First Off insisted on a go around due to the deteorating wx conditions on the NDB approach but the Captain ignored him and went ahead with the approach which ended in the aircraft landing short of the runway (I think it was featured on a Discovery programme). European airlines are now at the forefront of developing good CRM and cross cockpit co-operation and it forms a large chunk of training new pilots.

Nice selection there: I am off to Victoria BC via Vancouver on the 17th of June flying with BA from LHR then AC Jazz to Victoria. Having seen your shots and despite the fact that I am working for a week out there I now intend packing the camera! There is supposed to be lots of seaplanes based at Victoria Harbour. Any hints and tips for photography in the area would be appreciated.

Like the AA 767 with the reflections on the fuselage.

Rich,
That last RJ shot is great: I am a real fan of aircraft shots like that.

Air Comet 320 looks good, I didn’t realise they were operating the 320 now. Are FLYBE operating the DHC8C with no markings?

Some nice images there, love the Tristar…we just don’t see enough good old classics around anymore.
