The owner and founder of Red Bull is the richest person in Austria. He needed that when he bought two surplus Luftwaffe Alpha Jets, rolled them down to Fairchild-Dornier near Munich for refurbishment and had them put on the German civil register! No mean feat!

I agree with my fellow countryman, atc pal! You really are spoilt in GB as far as airshows are concerned, quit moaning!

I can wholeheartedly recommend the German Flugzeugforum (http://www.flugzeugforum.de). Obviously, some knowledge of German is required but postings can be made in English too. It covers all aspects of aviation, with airshows and modelling being the most popular subjects. Open to all enthusiaists and very friendly atmosphere. Entertainingly broad mixture of participants from (incredibly knowledgeable) teenagers over expert modellers to Luftwaffe aircrew (one of the moderators is a Marine Tornado pilot). Flugzeugforum participants also meet up regularly at airshows all over Europe (one German military airshow even announced the meeting point over the PY) and at modelling exhibitions.

Interesting pics and certainly a change from the usual a.net angles. If you want to improve on them, then

    – use a less grainy (i.e. less sensitive) film, e.g. Fuji Superia 200,
    – position yourself with the sun in the back,
    – set the light-metering on your camera to measure in the center only (avoids dark planes against a bright sky),
    – work a bit on your scanning techniques; learn to apply the unsharpen mask and adjust contrast etc.

The forum at jetphotos.net is excellent for learning, better than at a.net.

And by the way: Professional equipment is no guarantee for a good picture!

Skiing at Axamer Lizum near Innsbruck many years ago when suddenly the Red Bull Corsair flashes over the Alpine peaks and disappears down into the Inn valley for landing at Innsbruck….

There are over 330,000 now (26 of which are mine… 😀 )! I find it difficult enough to keep up with the additions….

@snoopy & arthur: You’re correct of course, thanks for pointing it out.

@rogerS: Sorry to hear about that, wonder what went wrong as I have seen plenty of pictures of aircraft on airliners.net and in http://www.flugzeugforum.de taken by people on Friday with a Spotters Ticket, and they were not just taken out a building.

@doughnut: The FW190 and the Bf109 were never listed as confirmed on the participant’s list, so I didn’t expect them. The owner of the Swiss P-51D and the Morane D3801 had had a clinch with the “authorities” at the Friedrichshafen show about a minimum altitude or distance not being held (not the first time that that has happened to experienced display pilots there) and as a consequence has cancelled all appearences in Germany (this was reported in a German forum). I thought the show was rather dull, certainly not commensurate with the events which it purported to celebrate (100 years of powered flight and Deutsches Museum).

@graeme: D-FDME has effectively not been displayed in public since it was acquired by the Foundation in 2001, something about problems getting hull insurance for it. Unfortunately it seems to have blown its engine a couple of weeks ago.

@doughnut: The Messerschmitt-Foundation is based at Manching near Ingolstadt, well inside the heavily guarded premises (the Eurofighter is built and tested there) and is not accessible to the public. The aircraft you saw at Oberschleissheim last weekend are the ones I referred to above. I was there too; what did you think of the event?

Thanks for the kind remarks. The aircraft are nowadays very rarely displayed anywhere, even in Germany. Best chance to see them is at the biennial ILA-exhibition in Berlin. Unfortunately, ‘ME also has engine problems now. Spotters saw it land recently at its home base trailing white smoke. The collection also comprises a static Bf 108 (marked “D-IOIO”), an unmarked static Bf 109G-2 (Hispano-based) and has an airworthy Messerschmitt M.17 and of course the Me 262 under construction. The two former a/c are often trucked to displays.

Prof. Messerschmitt assisted in the design of the Helwan HA200 in Egypt in the Sixties; a project which I believe was scrapped by President Nasser. The aircraft is not airworthy.
