Bernard scores well for knowing what he’s talking about and having endless enthusiasm. He scores badly for just being endless!
Generally, I think he adds to the show as long as he knows when to be quiet for a bit. Oh, and if the Red Bull P-38 is in the show then can someone tell Bernard that the USAAC also operated them a little bit, they weren’t just French recce aircraft!!
As for the show, the 2 Gladiators and the Blue-nosed Mustangs are a real draw, so is the mass of Spits (of course) but personally I am underwhelmed by the idea of the Horsemen display. Their Mustang show a couple of years ago was less impressive than a standard TFC pairs routine, the only ‘selling point’ being that they were very close together. Do that with Extras or Pitts if you like, not our national heritage (OK, they’re privately owned, not ‘National Heritage’ but you can see what I mean).
Anyway, we’re used to seeing 8 or 10 Spits up together so why is three so exciting? However, that’s just my opinion and I’m just glad to see the beauty of a MkI Spit in the air at all, so I shouldn’t really be complaining!
As always I’ll be there and will thoroughly enjoy the show, I always do 🙂
Actually, it’ll also be great to see the TFC Wildcat back in the show again, is TFC fully back to strength now?

Quite a major downsizing. Such a shame.
The Lightning moved to Pima last year, I believe.

I’ve just stumbled across this fascinating thread while researching info to update my logs.
A huge amount of effort went in to creating this list, but it hasn’t been updated for 5 years now and there must have been some changes to locations, or there may be more information available on known aircraft?
There may possibly even be some additions?
Or, in the last 5 years has a really good website on the subject appeared and this list is no longer relevant?
Just wondering…..

Hi,
many thanks for all your comments.
To answer a couple of points,
The main lens I used was a Sigma 150-500, which I only bought a week before this show. Although heavy, I soon got used to using it and have found it essential for airshows and avaition in general since then. It’s particularly good at Duxford.
This show was a celebration of Saab’s 75th Anniversary, but the previous Malmen show also included the Swedish AF Heritage flights fleet, and they are always flown with enthusiasm.
Having the show at Malmen also gives the bonus of the fantastic Flyvapenmuseum, if you have an extra day to spare.
We flew with Ryanair from Stansted to Gothenburg City (home of the Aeroseum) which is a few hours drive away from Malmen but you can easily add the museums at Ugglarp and Angelholm in.
Thoroughly recommended, and I shall be going again in two years time if they do it again!
Cheers
Alan
If anyones interested, I have just posted a thread on the Airshow Photos forum giving links to my shots from the 2012 Malmen Airshow, which was central to our Swedish visit.
The 6-ship formation consisting of Tunnan, Lansen, Draken, Viggen, Gripen and Saab105 was unforgettable!!
Cheers

Thank you for posting those brilliant pics. Though the museum at Kbely seems to be quite crowded, IMHO it´s better to have the planes stored inside, then having better access and photo possibilities, but having to put some of the unique ones outside.
Michael
I agree completely. Let’s face it. If aircraft like these had sat outside since 1945, we wouldnt be looking at them today!
Alan
The ‘pivo’ was excellent, thanks. Particularly at 75p a pint…..
One of the most annoying problems for photography at Kbely was the high wooden fences in the small hangers, together with the practice of parking vehicles in front of the aeroplanes (the tractor in front of the Avia B534 being the worst example). However the collection is so good that you forget to be angry after a while! I think I melted when I found the Saro Cloud!
The Technical museum is a fascinating place full of bikes, cars, trains etc.
While we were there they demonstrated a steam car and a pre-war motorcycle on the road outside! You could easily spend most of a day here (we had an hour!).
Finally, if you’re passing through Prague Airport don’t forget to find the prewar DC-3 preserved outside the CSA building, and the Aero 45 hanging in terminal 1.
Longshot, I can’t imagine that journey in an early Avia, that’s an amazing undertaking! The Czech aviation industry has always buily hardy aircraft though.
Cheers

Thanks for your comments, much appreciated.
I enjoy sharing my photos, and when planning trips I often find it useful to see photos from other visits and hear what can realistically be done in a day.
I generally try to include a photo of everything present, if possible. That way it is a complete record of what can be seen. It does end up as a lot of shots though!
I would encourage anyone to visit these museums and hopefully my photos will inspire someone to do so. This trip was a good example of what can be done on your own (without the need for a tour operator), with flights and hire car booked through Ryanair and the hotel being a well known brand.
You could actually fit this in over a weekend, although 3 days would give a more relaxed tour with more time to stand and stare!
Cheers

Amazingly Dragon Rapide G-AKIF now regularly operates pleasure flights from Duxford!
The Ju52 is, of course, the Amiot AAC1 which was, until recently, still at Duxford.
The Hunter is the F2 which later became a gate guard at Waterbeach. I believe it is now safely with the museum at Sywell.
Did the Jeff Hawke Javelin go to Germany?
What ever happened to that beautiful Silver Proctor?
Thanks for posting, some great memories there!
Alan

The Amiot AAC.1 was built by the French and last flown by the Portugese Air Force. Whilst nice its only representative of the type.
‘Mary Alice’ has no wartime service, so she is also only ‘representative of the type’. If the IWM were to dispose of any aircraft with no option for appropriate original markings, then other departures would include the P-51D from Lambeth and the Gloster Javelin, as well as the Storch, B-25 and Avenger already mentioned. There has already been much debate about the CASA.2111 (being Spanish built), and this would clearly also depart.
Besides, the Ju52/3m is an important and distinctive WW2 type, and one which my son (who is 5) recognises and is looking forward to seeing when we visit Duxford (his first visit) this year.
Duxford would be a poorer place without aircraft like this.
If disposals are inevitable, and these decisions aren’t taken lightly, then it makes sense to dispose of aircraft which aren’t actually on site (for example, those at Coventry, Dumfries and Flixton) first.

Changing aircraft serials purely to confuse spotters ‘for a laugh’ is just spoiling somebody elses fun for your own entertainment, much like walking into a park at the weekend and puncturing somebody’s football, (except that changing aircraft serials is unlikely to get you beaten up)!!
Reduced to it’s base level, it is a form of bullying.
Happy Christmas!
Alan
After reading a number of posts recently where we are all moaning about aircraft being sold abroad and exported I find it incredibly sad that we are now all having a moan about an aircraft being imported and to a collection that will actually display it rather than having it sit in a hangar as an appreciating asset.
Personally I think it will make a fine companion to the Sea Hurricane and look forward to its arrival.
I couldn’t agree more, I think it will take very nicely to the Old Warden circuit.

I don’t think any of our national collections have a Varsity – by all means let me know if I am wrong.
I believe that the RAF Museum has a Varsity at Cosford, although it is a slightly modified ex-RAE bird in Raspberry Ripple c/s. Newark have a very nice Varsity which is kept indoors (yey!) and Brooklands also have a complete example which, when I visited 3 weeks ago, was just being repainted.
Hang on!! IWM Duxford has WJ945 doesn’t it, previously G-BEDV with DAS?
As for the XF708, could it not be dismantled and stored on the Northside, kept out of the way and under cover until the resources (or money) exist to properly restore it?
I would imagine (although I don’t know) that the Shack breaks down pretty well and would fit in one of the many stores Northside in a dismantled state.

I thought the Fury was supposed to be a biplane, but I was wrong…..
It is undoubtably the best looking Parasol monoplane ever!!!!! 😀
