Oh, I think t-shirts are in order here…Of course, you better spin the globe around, to not offend my hosts.

Really very surprising they don’t bring more money, considering the price of most combat aircraft from the era. Most T-28s sell for more money than the average TBM.

They look good, fly good, haul several people and gear…besides being slow what am I missing?

    Didn’t you notice???

BTW, I understand that your MGB is now on display at The Shuttleworth Collection as a historic relic. You’ll have to come back and visit, as I understand Robbo has it on the cleaning list, right after the Desoutter.

If truth be told then the Rearwin has not cost much less than this!

And it hasn’t even got a rear turret.

The Avenger does burn a LOT more gas, though.

Waikiki is right in the heart of Honolulu, which is why I suggested you do an extensive search before signing up to stay there. It’s a lovely place, but it would not be my first choice. There are some excellent hotels in Waikiki (The Pink Palace, where US Submarine officers used to stay after returning from patrol during WW2, for instance), but Honolulu has grown so much it’s just not what I consider a “tropical paradise, getting away from it all” sort of place. Definately go there and spend some time, but visit at least one other island.

You will not find the huge American style malls in Hawaii, except for Honolulu. In many ways the Hawaiian islands resemble the UK, in that you have many villages connected by small twisty roads. I believe Oahu has the only dual carriageway motorway in the islands. Most of the villages have a high street, where you can find excellent shopping and restaurants. Very relaxed, with a nice slow pace. Plenty of t-shirts and painted coconuts, but also excellent art galleries. And be sure and visit a coffee plantation. The coffee is the best in the world.

We tend to spend a great deal of time in the pool, or on the beach, or in between. Do this for a couple of days, do a bit of exploring, then back in the water. A most excellent place.

If I wasn’t finishing the MiG-17F right now I’d buy this airplane. It’s a great airplane, and a fantastic buy.

Nothing against Honolulu or Waikiki, but it’s the biggest city (by far) in Hawaii. Because of that it has the most cars and the most airline traffic. Hololulu is small compared to London, so everything is crammed close together.

I would recommend either the North Shore of Oahu, or Maui. You won’t be disappointed with either. As for shopping there’s plenty everywhere you go (Maui is probably best for this). Downtown Honolulu has plenty of shopping, but also has a lot of other business and office buildings.

As the Pound goes so far against the dollar I would also recommend finding a really nice resort to stay at. As well as having a nice room a first class resort can offer many activities, such as scuba, golf, great swimming pools, spa. I always take advantage of a good concierge to help me plan my events (or lack thereof).

One of our favorites is The Orchid at Mauna Lani

Reminds me of the time I had to meet HP at the Reno airport (for the first time). I asked manonthefence if he had a photo of him that he could send me. Below is the photo.

Needless to say, we never found each other in the airport.

Well done James. Now that you’re a successful author you can retire to Australia.

When do you and Bev “ship out”?

I’m no expert but I don’t believe UK citizens need any special visa to visit the US (for up to 90 days).

We usually vacation in Hawaii every other year, and it is one of our favorite places. Very pretty and not too touristy. Saying that, Waikiki is not my favorite, as it is too near Honolulu. Pick up some travel guides and look at Maui, Kauai (our favorite) and the big island of Hawaii. Maui is the most chic, Kauai the greenest and most relaxed, and the big island has volcanos and excellent golf. Maui and Kauai are smaller, so they’re easier to drive around and explore the small villages.

Of course, we always spend a day in Honolulu as the flights all come through there. I really don’t care for the city, but I never miss an opportunity to visit Pearl Harbor.

It was a rather cold and snowy last day in Reno, and I was thinking to myself, “We’re not going anywhere in this”. I was just starting to think about where Hairyplane and I might have lunch when Howard said “Let’s Go!”, and the 3 of us fired up and headed East.

The weather did get much better after 50 miles.

TBM Avenger, the ultimate “party” warbird. Load up 5 or 6 mates in the back, and load all the lawn chairs and cases of beer in the bomb bay (just don’t open in flight).

Perfect lead in to a Mustang…
