Chalk up another victory for the colonies. And don’t mind James K, his real love is the Mustang. Nothing he would rather read or write about than the Mustang.
Mustang, Mustang, Mustang…All day, every day…Nothing but Mustangs.
Seriously though, greetings from your transatlantic cousin. Do you ski?

Moggy has me on “double secret” probation, so I have to behave myself.
Guess that ski trip to Staadt instead of going on survival training wasn’t such a good idea. Oh well, you know us rich. Always thinking we can buy our way out of everything…
With apologies to “Piece of Cake”…

First, some clarification…
I believe in safety when flying warbirds. Modern helmets don’t offer much protection in a crash (they’re pretty light weight when compared to a motorcycle or auto racing helmet), but they do keep you (usually) from passing out if your head bangs into the side of the canopy. Thanks to MexBob for showing how important they can be.
Oxygen masks. Most warbird pilots are now wearing them all the time, even at low altitudes. Fire or fumes in the cockpit can put a man down very quickly. And with an engine fire opening the cockpit can lead to sucking fire and smoke right in with you. So, a mask is a very good thing.
I have read all the roll over accident reports with the Sea Fury. I don’t believe a helmet, or lack thereof would have saved any of the pilots. Removing the rollover plate behind the pilot probably did contribute, and several Sea Fury owners are considering going back to the single place configuration. As much as I would hate to loose the jump seat, this is something I’m looking at.
Flying has certain risks, such as flying around with the rollover plate removed. I would like to get a vintage helmet setup for some air to air photos, not everyday use. But, I appreciate the comments about safety and “gearing” up. I remember being rather embarassed when I first started flying the T-28 and wearing all this stuff. Seemed silly, as nobody bothers when flying a Pitts or Decathalon. I don’t think it silly anymore.
Thanks for your comments,
Steve
Moggy says I don’t play well with others, so I’m not allowed to comment or it’s off to my room with no dinner.
As much as I hate to do this (knowing that JDK has forbidden using the M-word) I’m going to vote for the P-51 Mustang.
My first warbird fighter ride was with Ike Innes in his P-51 “Miracle Maker”. For that reason alone, this plane will always be special. As we don’t have many Spits here in the US, it’s the sound of the Merlins in the P-51 that always cause my head to turn at airshows. Magic.
Now, who knows how I will vote after some more time around Spits. Of course, I have a soft spot in my heart for the Hurri (gotta love that wide undercarriage and the visibility over the nose).
Guess I like ’em all.
Steve
Thanks my Mexican friend:)
At least I don’t fly in cut off shorts and a t-shirt (I know some guys who do this)
I understand that a helmet is the best way to go for safety, along with nomex suit, gloves and boots. But for an occasional photo shot or airshow, maybe it’s an acceptable risk.
But, I appreciate your comments and the spirit in which they were given.

The REAL one
Thanks for the info Arthur. I will be flying into Hong Kong, then spending some time touring factories in the Guangzhou provence.
Probably won’t have much time for sight seeing in China, but that’s what England is for.
And yes Rob, t-shirts come in all sizes.
Steve
the REAL one…
My apologies Moggy for all the disruption this past week with kittyhawk. I have enjoyed this forum, and feel I have made some new friends. Hopefully some of you feel the same.
I honestly don’t know what this fellows problem is. He has never met me. He knows nothing about me, except what everyone here knows…I’m a pilot and a warbird owner. Isn’t that what this forum is about? His China comments were so off the mark that it literally stunned me. And yes, I did let him get under my skin causing me to attack him back. For that I am sorry, as it was not my intention to harm this forum or this group.
I have found that very few warbird owners and pilots know how to turn on the computer, yet alone participate in on-line forums. I let it be known that I am a warbird pilot with the hope that I could help others who also want to fly these airplanes (which some of you have done regarding flying old airplanes).
One last thing, I don’t find kittyhawks latest stunt in using my name the least bit funny. I would ask the moderator to deal with him again, please. I have advised my lawyers as to his stunt and asked them to get in touch with a firm in Sydney. I wanted to use my name because I hoped that people from the forum would look me up at airshows. I guess there’s a price to pay in having to deal with people like this.
Again, my apologies for all the fuss. It was not what I wanted or planned.

PM me your address and I’ll send you a subscription. One of the perks of being a millionaire:)
Just ask Kittyh@#$
Hope you can come out and play on the 15th for the sunset display. It’s worth a Sea Fury T-shirt (one of the perks of being a millionaire, old boy).
Come on, can’t let Moggy have all the fun…

I’ve got my map and I’m starting to plan my route. Andy in Beds has convinced me to rent a car so I can get around easier than taking the train.
I was telling Andy and James K about the last time I went to Duxford, in 1996. Rode the train to Cambridge then took a taxi out to the airfield for the day. Well, when it was time to leave I couldn’t find a taxi, so I decided to walk. Remember the scene in “12 O’Clock High” when the American peddles up to the airfield? Well, I thought it would be easy so I set off.
Never been so lost in all my life. It’s a miracle I’m still not wandering around out there. Almost slept in a church. Never again.
So, Duxford is definately on the list (last time I was there the new 8th AF wing wasn’t even started).
The Mossie museum sounds good. Any other suggestions? Yeovilton is quite a drive, but maybe worth the effort.
And of course, Shuttleworth on the 15th. Hope to see you there.
Looks perfect, what did you do?
Wow, is this what being on acid is like???

Very cool, just don’t tell my wife…
I had no idea you still had a Spitfire FACTORY in England!
BTW How was that BBC show “Spitfire Ace”? I heard about it here in the States, but haven’t been able to find it on tape. Is it worth watching?
Great photos…I love the control tower, just like in the movie “12 O’Clock High”.
