I can’t believe it! I thought it was fantastic news that “Airline” is being released on DVD, but Network are excelling themselves resurrecting all the old aviation TV series. As though it was telepathy, lo and behold the entire “Planemakers” series mentioned above will be released in two x 4-DVD Volumes on 23rd December 2011 – that’s 8 DVDs!

Cannot believe no-one ever took a colour photo of this scheme.

After its service in the RAF, it was believed this aircraft was overall grey with red registration letters.

See thread here discussing this issue http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?t=36588

Then it was repainted into the scheme shown here until 1953. Apart from Charles E. Brown, I don’t think anyone else could afford colour film, which wasn’t affordable by to the masses in the UK until a few years later.
Therefore, not many people can dispute your interpretation of that b/w photo, which looks pretty accurate to me.
The blue was probably the same ‘Hawker Blue’ that Hurricane G-AMAU, Hart G-ABMR and Tomtit G-AFTA were all painted in at the same time, which is pretty much the correct shade of Royal Blue as in your profile.

That Gary Halliday series….what was it called really…?

…err Gary Halliday, see the link in my previous post.

There was another about that time called ‘Moonflight’, which was all about secret Lysander ops’ into occupied Europe. Lots of flickering flarepaths et al. Has that one survived I wonder..????

Yes remember that, but was it called ‘Moonflight? Thought is was moonlight something?

‘The Plane Makers/ The Power Game’…..Patric Wydmark (?) I think. It was a bit naff, but they built a huge mock-up of the ‘prototype’ whatever-it-was…and it used to appear at a few airshows, as I remember seeing it in the flesh being towed around.

Patrick Wymark and the Scott-Furlong Predator..ah I remember it well. It looked like a cross between a Fairey Delta 2 and a Dassault Balzac, as it could take off vertically (via a crane!) It appeared in the static park at Biggin Hill’s BofB show in 1964 and caused a lot of interest.

Whereas Moggy was inviting reminisences about the Whirlybirds call sign, can anyone confirm my vague (but nevertheless bizarre, considering the long lqpse of time) recollection that the call sign of Gary Halliday’s DC-3 was Golf Alpha November Lima Foxtrot?

Perhaps the cool call signs had a greater impact of the young viewers of those days.

Why would I remember such a thing decades after the show was broadcast?
    Must get out more.

Not according to Wikepedia who state it was Golf Alpha Oboe Roger George.

No more public discussion of Airline please.

As the copyright do-gooders have stepped in and my PM box was full this am (you know who you are big brother/s) 😡

I missed Eastenders last night, but dare i watch what i taped today ???

    Its a copyright thing apparently.

    Nuff said……….. 🙁

    .

Well it’s time to revive this thread after SIX years() as I am pleased to announce they must have sorted out the copyright issue as the entire Yorkshire TV series “Airline” will be released by Network as a 3-DVD set on February 13th 2012 and can be pre-ordered on Amazon. At last! Hooray!

Now if the Comet replica in the States could be repainted green as G-ACSR, just think what a sight that would make if it came to the UK and formated with OW’s ‘CSS and Black Magic ‘CSP?

I think its a crying shame that this was allowed to happen – mercedes kept the 500sl that diana used which is now in a museum and yet we sold and parted out an aircraft that she flew? She shouldnt have been sold on by the RAFM.

How much of the royal flight is actually left now? I know some aircraft live on, I know about the helicopter at weston but what other aircraft still exist in their original guise?

One Queens Flight Whirlwind and a Wessex are at Weston, whilst the other Wessex is in the RAF Museum at Hendon. Prince Charles’ Chipmunk is privately owned but still flies in its special Royal red scheme. Alas the fixed wing fleet is another matter as the first QF Heron (XH375) got sold to Canada and converted to a Saunders ST-27 and I think two of the Andovers were sold off in Gambia or somewhere in Africa. The third one ended up with RAE with various lumps and bumps for trials, getting unceremoniously scrapped afterwards. We have a very poor record of recognising the importance of Royal Flight aircraft and preserving them. The MoD are more interested in making money by selling them off.!

I feel very priviledged to have flown in XS770/G-HRHI. I think the pilot’s name was Diana at the time?;)

Regards the 707, I’d heard it was in deteriorating health even before the BA collection disposal, so it may have had to be reduced to produce in due course anyway…

Quite correct, it was becoming a H&S issue and was quite corroded.
This is the difference between a large airframe that has been kept outside and the TWA Connie at Wroughton that has only been outside 2-3 times for selected open days. Thankfully the 707’s nose has been preserved and beautifully restored in BOAC colours.

Excellent Brian. Looks like you’re putting the tripod manufacturers out of business as this is one piece of kit we don’t need to lug around any more? Seems your Sony A580 has proved itself in the Science Museum and now here.

Looks like they have double standards – finally putting the Victory Park collection under cover, yet there are many rare types at Khodynka that they don’t care about, being subect to weather and vandals. Very pleased I saw both collections in 1997 when they were in much better condition.
