This is a bit of colour film of the Farnborough show, I dont remember Supermarine Scimitars with smoke systems and an all white Gnat trainer.

    Sit back and enjoy.

    Richard

I was there and remember it well, despite only being 11 years old at the time.
The Scimitars were an aerobatic team called ‘ The Red Blades’ flown by 800 Squadron and that Gnat was the only one painted white. Ah nostalgia isn’t what it used to be!! 😉

Never mind who flew or serviced them, what happened to the planes? Any surviving?

Several survive in various states in Kuwait. Three are mounted on poles at the military entrance to Kuwait International Airport and others are ‘parked’ at various military locations. One is ‘preserved’ and kept in a hangar at Kuwait Airport for a Future KAF Museum, along with several other retired types.

I know G-AIWA had a landing accident in France in 1989, but I am quite shocked to see G-INFO lists it as ‘destroyed’. I thought it was going to be brought back to the UK and get rebuilt?

Here is a rare Proctor that was ‘put out to grass’ in the mid-60s at Rayak Air Base in the Lebanon. Great shame there is no preservation movement out there, as there was also a Lebanese Air Force Prentice alongside this.

They must be about due for a re-branding – 13 years since the current scheme came in.

..is adding a crest ‘rebranding’? I heard they were due for a completely new rebranded livery following the merger with Iberia. Is this it??:rolleyes:i

I flew in G-ADDI from South Marston in July 1964 during Vickers families air display.I was an ATC cadet and two of us were marshalling the aircraft in after each joy flight and keeping the crowds back behind the rope. For our help we were given a free flight. I have the Rugrats Resin 1/72nd scale kit of a Dragon that I plan to build and finish in that lovely red and white Chrisair scheme in commemoration of that flight.

Brian Woodford, who had a wonderful collection of vintage airworthy de Havilland aircraft was very keen to bring G-ADDI back to the UK and add it to his collection during the mid’80s. He even went out to Washington and stayed with Mike Kimbrell and I understand he made quite a substantial offer for the aircraft, but alas Mike would not sell it. Great shame, as this aircraft really would be appreciated more in this country than in the States and I hope someone manages to bring it back.

All the above is perfectly true, but copyright is only worth enforcing if someone is commercial exploiting another’s photographs. I can’t see that making single copies for private use is any problem and does not invoke any copyright laws, any more than printing off a photo from a forum for a private collection. It is only when an indivual seeks to make money from that photo, that copyright rules kick in.

This issue should never have been raised. Let’s get some facts straight, nearly all the teams have had their share of accidents, some more than others, but they don’t just give in. The Red Arrows are not just a recruiting tool, but they are our ambassadors for the RAF and fly the flag for our country wherever they go.Their value to this country is more than just the cost of fuel, pilots etc.
Italy’s Frecce Tricolori had a massive accident at Ramstein in 1988….did they disband? When the Thunderbirds were training with T-38s, the entire team flew into the ground. Did they disband? The answer is ‘no‘. As they say ‘the show must go on’! The US economy is in a bad way, worse than ours, yet have they considered disbanding the Thunderbirds…no way! Nor should we even think about disbanding our Red Arrows. As for being ‘boring’, well all I can say is that you’ve been to too many air shows and have been spoilt!
The Reds change/modify their routine every year, which is more than other teams do.

    interesting dilemma isn’t it

do we want them to spend the money on the Do17 – or would we prefer for them to use what money they have to fund say

    – completion of the Hampden restoration
    – restoration of the Brigand fuselage and fund a search in Malaysia for some tail/wing/nacelle/undercarriage material
    -restoration of the stored Ventura
    -restoration of the LVG CVI
    -restoration of the Farman
    -support for the Whitley project
-support for the Stirling Project and confirm or disprove the Russian Stirling
-support for the DeH Hornet project
-support the Assault Glider Project (a Hamilcar to complete the set…..)
-collect any available Wildebeast/Vincent material for a rebuild
-research and fund the build of some wings for the Wallace
-fund the reproduction of a Siskin using the available wing sections
-(insert your own pet project here)

all of these would be pretty unique projects as well

…not to mention paying their electricity bills in order to provide decent lighting at Hendon 🙁

Superb! Spot on! Thanks for posting those Phil, I have been waiting patiently. As soon as the wings are fitted, does anyone know if and when it will go to Coventry, or perhaps kept at Kemble?

One thing HHA have always been clear on – if they got contract work for the Bucc, it would NOT be available for display work…..

If that is their policy, how come they sent one of their Hunters to RIAT?
Bit of a chicken-and-egg situation. No one is going to make work for something that’s not available to fly, but if it’s airworthy, work may be offered? For example, if the owners of the Vulcan and Sea Vixen thought they would not get any air show bookings, would they still proceed to make these aircraft airworthy?

, as it’s not a ‘sexy’ aircraft. Andy

I disagree, I think it’s a VERY sexy aircraft with all the curves and bumps in the right place and two big Bristols to boot!;)
Much rather see one of these flying to a certain ‘tin triangle’!

Frankly I am in two minds about this aircraft, whilst I am pleased to see her saved I would rather she was back here in Britain. On the other hand it will probably be easier with the American authorities allowing her to fly.

Wasn’t the aircraft en-route to the UK to appear at some shows here at the time? If it had an engine seizure after landing here, it may have remained.
I think it is only due to the funding and enthusiasm by that American lady that it got rescued at all, so we have to be grateful it wasn’t abandoned in Goose Bay for good.

Isn’t the Cosford Lincoln supposed to be haunted? I’ve heard tales! 😮
