Brian & Paul, congrats on a fantastic job by you and the people from your village. It is good to see that these men are not forgotten.
Laurence, great work and an interesting site ! hope the Council do what they should do and get that memorial in place pronto !
A true hero , may he rest in peace.
As quickly & sadly as we are losing those great men from World War Two , we must be approaching the time when there will be no one left of those who recognised the evil of Fascism before most Governments did and went to fight the good fight with only a wish to do the right thing .
My mistake Aldertag, well spotted, Mods dont think i can change this myself can I ?
Very nice.many thanks .
the fact that he turned his back on Bomber command after the war did it for me, after being a champion of the force from the beginning, the war cabinet and WC did them(BC) up like a kipper! 😡
It was only recently that i came across reference to the fact that he ordered, despite the objections of some in Bomber command, the attacks in the last months of the war that resulted in Bomber command getting a lot of bad press, Then not that long afterwards implying that the decision was made by others and was a bad mistake. 😡
Just watched a documentary from 1993 which used footage from the film and some previously unseen, at least by me , footage from various tests /practice runs .One of the shots was reckoned to be Guy Gibson in G for George, which made me think of coming across the grave of Richard Trevor-Roper a few years back.
Brave men, who will never be forgotten.
or maybe it would be better spent keeping the Vulcan in the air for 10 mins :diablo:
Roadracer departing stage left as fast as poss before the big delta brigade arrive !
No in all honesty , and joking aside, I reckon it is a good idea to bring the sacrifice of all those who flew in the Wimpies, Hampdens, Halifaxs et all to the notice of the gen public in a way that will be seen by as many as possible.
I often thought that Lottery funds could have been looked for with a view to getting something like a Mossie back in the air or as David said bringing back something like the Sterling from extinction.
Very good news, as said already long overdue.
This article from The Standard explains a little better
Moggy
Maybe its Sunday and the cobwebs are not quite dispelled yet but i still dont understand why have fighter aircraft as part of a Bomber command memorial ??
Thanks for that , never thought of looking at the Runnymeade listing. It is truly a sobering thing to think of so many with no known grave.
I have visited a lot of CWGC graves over the years and it can be a very humbling experience.I always find the sight of so many “known only to god” headstones terribly sad.
What brought this back to my head is the fact that the grave of an American B-17 crewman has recently been discovered and his remains will hopefully be going home soon. He had been incarcerated in Stalag luft III and died as a result of a fall.He was buried close to a hospital and missed at the end of the war as the records were incomplete.
Made me wonder if there were many more servicemen who were known to have been captured and subsequently declared as MIA?
great shots !!
i always reckon things are better in 4’s…..
Now why cant modern day Air hostesses ( or whatever they call them in these PC days ) smile like that ??? or have i spent too much time on Ryangrumpyair??
Well done to all those involved.
Answer to my own question!

bet that took a lot of throttle/flaps/airbrake jockeying…nice photo !
Thought the explosion of the V2 was particularly impressive ( if that’s the right word ) but have a few concerns.
While there were obvious H&S concerns would it not have been more realistic to stage the explosion on ground at the same level as the buildings and without an embankment in between ? Most of the force of the explosion went upwards where otherwise most of it would have gone sideways into the buildings?
Would the V-2 have buried itself that far in the ground if it hit in a built up area , ie hitting concrete or stone? Also the V2 went supersonic i think ? what would have been the effect of a supersonic impact on solid ground would there have been a significant shock wave?
