Apologies. Although, IMHO, the Chinese 6th generation concept does kinda resemble the jet from Firefox. I’ll try to keep things on topic henceforth.

You know, that design looked familiar to me and then I realized:

I think a certain Man With No Name may want to have a chat with the nice folks over at AVIC.

The MiG 1.44 was a really good machine, even if they base the J-20 upon the MiG-1.44, you can get assure it is a machine that will surpass the eurocanards, F-35 and F-22 in flight performance and maneuvrability, if the J-20 is equipped with Russian 117s will be a really good machine, added the Chinese avionics and a few tweaking in the inlet you can get a really good aircraft.
Recent news say China and Russia have agreed to co-operate in license agreements and copy right issues of russian weapons in China, so if they are willing to sell the 117s on Su-35BMs they will sell it for the J-20

For China to build the MiG-1.44 means they are getting almost the PAK FA level of technology because the MiG-1.44 was to be modified into a real fifth gneneration fighter

One does not simply modify a 4th generation fighter into a 5th generation fighter.

Well, the 4 channels per face come from the fact that each face consists of 4 modules. Keeping in mind, that 9M96 is active radar missile, only midcourse updates are required. Therefore, the number of channels is quite conserative.

Vityaz SAM is considered to be the land based counterpart of Redut/Poliment. You can have a look at it’s export version – South Korean KM-SAM, Almaz-Antey has delivered three units by now.

I attach pictures of elements of 42Ya6 APAR for Morfey short-range SAM which is under development by Almaz-Antey as part of S-500 system. This gives quite good appreciation of components used in Poliment as well.

Ah so that is what modern Russian 4 channel X-band T/R modules look like.

Russia ready to sell Su-35 fighter jets to China

Russia’s state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport said on Tuesday it was ready to hold talks with China on the delivery of advanced Su-35 fighter aircraft to the Chinese air force.

“We are ready to work with our Chinese partners to this end [Su-35 deliveries],” Deputy General Director of Rosoboronexport Alexander Mikheyev said at the Airshow China 2010, which is being held on November 16-21 in Zhuhai.

Did they learn nothing from the last time they did this?

Bob Gates is still vehemently opposed to restarting the F-22 line AFAIK.

The F-35 is the net work! AWACS is nice but 5th generation platforms can act as sensor nodes.

I thought the F-22 can only receive data.

It is really sad to see the desparate situation Dassault is in..They need the President of France to act as interim Sales Manager ..

That’s actually pretty normal. Obama is known to push for US buys when he visits foreign countries.

Shukla sahib says that F-35 with 2 internal PGMs and 2 internal AMRAAMs, plus 2 External fuel tanks, 2 extrenal PGMs, 2 external AIM-9x type missiles will have a very high performance compared to a Gripen/Eurofighter/Rafale/super hornet/Mig-35.

Even if this was an option, the price and ToT would likely be unacceptable. And I don’t think that with external fuel tanks and missiles that the F-35 will have better performance at all than the planes listed. If anything it would have significantly worse performance- it loses the stealth advantage and the advantage of flying clean. Even with those advantages it would likely have inferior performance to most of the aircraft listed in many ways. The F-35 has two things going for it over the MMRCA candidates- stealth and sensor fusion. It would lose the stealth advantage by flying with external stores.

    http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE69S29F20101031

(Reuters) – Former guerrilla leader Dilma Rousseff won Brazil’s presidential election on Sunday after promising to stick to policies that have lifted millions from poverty and made Brazil one of the world’s hottest economies.

Brazil’s election authorities officially called the vote in Rousseff’s favor after she amassed 55.7 percent of valid votes compared to 44.3 percent for opposition candidate Jose Serra, with 95 percent of votes tallied.

So given Lula’s preference for the Rafale, it looks like the Rafale may be selected yet.

Tornado with M88’s would have been more practical than an M53-powered Tornado. Two M88’s are more fuel efficient than a single M53.

And we know the best engine ever installed on the F-14 was the F110-400.

    Some considerations:

    Honeywell F125-powered F-5E Tiger II
    Honeywell F125-powered Jaguar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QISldH-zAP0)
    General Electric J85-powered Alpha Jet
    Turbo Union RB199-powered Northrop YF-17 or F-CK-1 Ching-kuo
    General Electric J79-powered EE Lightning
    Rolls-Royce RB.168 Mk 202-powered Mirage III
    Pratt & Whitney PW1120-powered Starfighter
Pratt & Whitney PW1120-powered Phantom II
    Eurojet EJ200-powered Gripen
    Eurojet EJ200-powered Rafale
    General Electric F101-powered F-16XL or Mitsubishi F-2

Oh, dear that nice British lady in the video keeps saying, “Jaggy-Ooh-Ar”. My ears are bleeding.

I’d like to see an AL-31 engined F-14 (or 15 or 16). Or conversely an F100/F110 engined Flanker. The engines are very similar in terms of dimensions, weight, and performance. I doubt it would be entirely straightforward, but I’m sure it could be done.

The gearboxes, and fuel lines are probably positioned in a different spot. And the control systems are probably different. And the inlets are designed for different engines. I know the AL-31 is pretty resistant to compressor stall, so I imagine inlets wouldn’t be an issue in this case, but the question is- who would create such a frankenstein?

The WS-10 engine from what I understand has a core strongly based on the F101/F110/CFM56 core, and that’s used on the J-11b, so that’s probably worth noting. Also, there was a Russian offer to re-engine the Iranian F-14’s with Al-31 engines, but if it actually went through, I don’t believe has been confirmed (I think it is somewhat doubtful).

Engines are finicky. Inlets are designed for a specific engine, so it’s not always likely to work for a swap- even the F110 and F100 powered F-16’s have different inlets. You also have to ensure that the FCS can cope with a different center of mass and flight envelope.

Has the AESA on the J-10b been confirmed? I’ve heard nothing solid.

    Very interesting, Loke.

As someone who has worked on this very thing, I didn’t realize how far along GE had come with this. Very impressive. I’d be worried about the resistance to FOD in such an engine, but I’m sure there are a lot of smart engineers working on it.

As for Eurojet, it would be interesting to see what they’re up to- I doubt RR and MTU have been sitting still on this.

    From here:
    http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/generic/story.jsp?id=news/awst/2010/09/20/AW_09_20_2010_p71-253575.xml&headline=Missile-Killing%20Interceptors%20Eyed%20By%20Israel,%20U.S.&channel=defense

The Stunner interceptor, designed and built by Rafael in a cooperative program with Raytheon, is a low-cost design that targets threats such as cruise missiles, medium- and long-range artillery rockets and short-range ballistic missiles. It has two stages: The first is a solid-fuel, rocket motor booster; the second is a curious asymmetrical kill vehicle with advanced steering for increased agility. A three-pulse motor provides additional thrust at critical moments of flight. A multi-mode sensor package—electro-optical and millimeter wave, electronically scanned array radar—provides all-weather performance against small, maneuvering targets. The Stunner is larger than Raytheon’s AIM-120 medium-range air-to-air missile but smaller than the Arrow 3 interceptor.
