A very well painted picture…superb. I have read Dr Ducelliers book, but do not remember reading that Pickard ditched his ordnance, which would make sense if you needed more speed and maneuverability. I shall have to dig it out again to read up on that part.
I has been documented that a Lt Mayer of JG26 being associated with the downing of Pickards Mosquito HX922, Sqd Ldr Ian McRitchies aircraft MM404 was downed by a light flak position.
*edit Cannot find any info on Lt Mayer (sp?)
Probably this pdf file …

I, along with airports ed have been looking to contact Maxwell Sparks regarding the 70th anniversary.
He emailed me today to inform me that Maxwell Sparks unfortunately passed away in June 2013 aged 92. If this is so, then what a shame that no formal Obituary has been published.
Blue skies Mr Sparks.
Indeed, condolences to his family.
Since we cannot get the only real flying one here (boo hoo!) that would suffice as eye candy for a few minutes 🙂
PM sent Ed
You can visit any time you wish Andy, Remembrance Sunday and the Amiens anniversary are annual events. Drop me a PM a day or so before if you plan to be in the area apart from those dates.
Denis, what time will your memorial service take place on the Sunday?
Service to take place at 1200 Ed, As stated, it is only a small affair and one we hold every year. Usually only about thirty to 40 people attend. Just a simple ten minute do.
We will hold our annual small service with a wreath laying at the airfield memorial at Hunsdon on Sunday the 16th Feb. all are welcome. Just wear good waterproof boots!
I tried, oh believe me I tried, to arrange something more substantial this year, but it was not to be. We were hoping to make a day of it on the actual anniversary with members of all three families of the aircrew lost on the raid in attendance. This would have involved a talk, not about the raid, but about the three airmen Sampson, Pickard & Broadley themselves. Unfortunately this fell through and we are back to our normal simple service. A shame indeed for the seventieth anniversary itself. I have had an email regarding a possible link with something the Mosquito museum wish to do, so its a case of watch this space.
But no flypast, (nothing in the air apparently at this time of year due to winter servicing) no big do like the Dambusters special 70th, in fact its all rather mediocre for one of the RAF’s most audacious operations..whatever the reasons behind the raid.
Members of the HAMG with George Broadley and Christopher Pickard, who met for the first time at the unveiling of Hunsdons Roll of Honour in June 2012. The first time a Broadley and Pickard have been back on the site of RAF Hunsdon since the Amiens raid.
A shame about the vitriolic comments youtube attracts..
good film though.
found somewhere else, maybe Cologne… misleadingly identified as
“hot water boiler”… and then put on a truck for disposal and transported
With respect,I would have thought that any cylindrical object found in the ground amongst soil or spoil destined for a construction site Germany would be subject to scrutiny. Long before being consigned to the back of a tipper truck.
The third ‘cookie’ to turn up in the past year if it was such a device.
No thanks, flingwings are not my cup of tea!
Surprised to learn via Wiki that the French operated several post war right up to the mid 1950’s.
Thank you Andy.
Has the new development been built since?
