Thanks Dave 🙂
To be fair there is a sign by North Wealds gatehouse that clearly says no photography.
My Father enlisted in 1940, in June 1944 he went ashore with the Headquarters Squadron of the 34th Tank Brigade. Later his unit fought in the first Battle of Odon at Hill 121. He was still with the army of Occupation in Germany in 1947 transferring from Regt to regt until forced to come home.
He never said a word about it, everything I have found out about his wartime life was after his death in 1977.
Great images of my all time favourite sharp noisy pointy thing 🙂 thanks!
Richard Dimbleby flew twenty missions with bomber command to make recordings for the BBC, this audio is from one of those during a raid on Berlin.
Good luck to him, he is safe in the knowledge that he has provided very much entertainment on the vintage aircraft circuit for some time. As said, a very approachable and amiable chap. Would he keep one aircraft to enjoy flying from time to time, or sell off the whole collection? Something we must wait to find out I’m afraid.
Although not Hangars, some of the other airfield buildings that have survived and are probably being restored. These images were taken three or four years ago and may have changed considerably since taken.
I thought Croydon airfield already had a memorial ?
I did text Mr Webster beforehand, who replied that the public were not allowed on site…glad I ignored him. Speaking to the microlight club members, they doubt if anything is going to happen soon and said there will be another gathering before the airfield really does close. didn’t take my camera due to the inclement weather, but a couple of phone images.
Watched her this afternoon taking off and doing a circuit, then flew off to the east, has she gone ?
Deenthorpe, Northants for a wander down its last runway before a new town gets built on the site,
Quite a few airfields in Oxfordshire have retained peritracks and runways. former RAF Oakley, Wescott, Barford St John (some scenes from ’12 o clock high’ shot here) Moreton in the Marsh,(fire Brigade Training centre) Pershore, (was MOD until recently I’m led to believe)
Bradwell Bay, Essex still has the main, parts of the secondarys, a full peri track, blister hangars and a control tower.
Rivenhall, Essex was a jewel until aggressive aggregate quarrying destoyed it
Wymeswold, Leicestershire mostly complete but covered in solar panels.
Finmere near Buckingham is largely complete.
As with all old airfields, permission must be sought to wander as most form part of farm or industrial estates.
Try having a look around on this link….

That is Easton Lodge, Great Dunmow. USAAF Station AAF-164 home of the 386th BG (M)
That is good news, I suppose it will soon emerge who has become the new owner, might even get to see her fly out 🙂
Many thanks to everyone who has taken the time to follow this thread. It is a privilege to work at North Weald and be tasked with recording what goes on, so positive feedback is always appreciated!
This thread is bookmarked, always a pleasure to read and look 🙂
