All in jpeg Brian, I have asked quite a few individuals. One day someone will be able to read the damn things!
Maybe digi-cameras will soon be able to truely emulate the effect.
But will future generations be able to view them?. I have many CD’s stored containing my general photos. Quite a few I cannot access because my new computer will not read them. Nor for that fact can friends computers read them!.
Also it seems that the printouts from the computer onto photo papers seem to dull and fade quickly, where as images like thse shown above are timeless due to the medium they were taken in.
I fear our digital efforts wont stand the test of time like these.
I Visited for the first time just a week or so ago. Great little place with many displays and exhibits. funny how the places right on your doorstep are amongst the last you get around to seeing!
I can’t think of many airshows that make millions
The airshows probably dont!, I bet the outside caterers at Duxfords airshows do though!, £1.60 for a cup of hot water and a teabag, and you still have to stand there and wind it up yerself!
Ah Lady Belle:), had the pleasure of showing Ralph Hobb’s Grandson Ryan around Station 166, Matching airfield, some three years ago. Ralph was engineer /top gunner on Ladybelle for several flights when there was a shortage of aircrew. Below is Ralph and ‘belle early in 1944.

You can read a little about Ralph here wily…
Nope – nothing to do with Stansted. Its quite possible to stage shows at Weald in the future (and there is growing will to do so) so long as someone is prepared to stand up and organise one. The inauguration of the gate guard Hurricane earlier this year had an excellent turn-out and showed what could be possible once again..
Quite, as the turnout for the fly-ins also proves, I asked because I have always wrongly thought this was the reason, as I suspect many others do, thanks for putting that right!
Any commercial out-door spectator event that is seriously affected by weather (ie poor attendance and reduced income), repeatedly, is not going to survive for long.
I agree on that also, just a tongue in cheek comment;)
My understanding was that it was the great British weather that killed off the North Weald show.
Was it not the proximity to Stansted that was the demise of the North Weald airshows?, Thats how I have always understood it.. rightly or wrongly.
Rain had reduced attendance significantly. It was possible to ride that storm, but when it kept happening repeatedly from one year to the next, it was difficult to convince sponsors that it was a good way of making money. No sponsor, no show.
Working on that assumption Janie, it wont be long before RAIT and Legends are curtailed eh? 🙂
It is the newish or should I say cleaner looking curved roof Hangar on the right as you leave ‘The Squadron’.
Halton & Cosford RAF apprenticeship stopped 15 years ago!!!
Blimey! I think me watch has stopped:D
Ok then where do the RAF teach such skills BIGVERN? Surely they do still teach, The only reason I mentioned apprentiships, was that subject was my Son’s first choice trade when he applied for the RAF not 9 years ago.
Or an obvious route..Join the Royal Air Force as an apprentice airframe technician. Apparently the recruitment figures are down, you could end up with a Halton apprenticeship. Once your time is served, the (Aviation) world could be your Oyster.
While we’re on the subject of Air Ministry marked items, would anyone know if it possible to obtain one of the old white porcelain AM 1 pint mugs?
I will keep my eyes out for one. Again thanks to ebay, I got my 1 pint mug three or four months ago for £8, a recent one sold for £28.

Going slightly off topic here but picked up a lovely MKII course and speed calculator complete with a couple of 1944 charts for £30 last week:) Very pleased!.

Wish I knew what my little brother did with it when I joined the Army.:(
He probably flogged it on ebay….MJW probably bought it:p
I too own the latter Thunderer type 23/230 under the AM and Crown. paid £30 on ebay for it, as no one else bid on it , It sold only for its offer price. In recent months I have watched them sell for anything between £45-£85:eek:
This French collectors website shows both patterns.

I have not seen the 1st pattern in any old crew photos, only the more familiar Acme Thunderer type hanging under the lapel. Interesting item though:)
I helped out with the Hertfordshire one, I think it mentions that somewhere;)
Well done:), my finger was hovering over the bid button, with my *not so happy* wife hovering over me:eek:
Think of it as another bit of history saved;) a round of applause to you!
