I own bits and pieces from many crash sites. These range from momento’s from digs I have attended, to parts I have found on my own at various sites. In most cases people did lose their lives in the crashes, but in a way someone has to own the parts, so It might as well be someone who does actually care.
In many cases I have given parts to interested parties who I know will not sell them on open markets. I would not part with anything if I thought the new owner would look at it with a cor! someone died in this thought.
Take the part, own it for what it is, because even asking the question you asked shows you do actually care, so it will be looked after with the right attitude.
Does this make sense? 🙂
Fantastic news, I for one wish them every success. 🙂
Good images, whats with the question mark on the fuselage
I remember in 1981 seeing many of the type as fitted to the Hawker Typhoon laying on the old firing range at Dengie flats near Bradwell Bay. fitted with a correct weight concrete warhead, they were fired in ballistic tests against ‘soft targets’. I wonder if any survive there to this day?.
I am led to believe that exactly the same conditions were applied to this flypast as to that last weekend involving the Mustang at Sawbridgeworth. As it is on the extended centreline of Stansted’s runway 05, and well inside their airspace, they could have said no…… But they didnt, and we all got to see the aeroplanes!
Yes they probably did apply the same conditions, just a bit of jealousy on my part as we paid for Maurice to appear out of the meagre funds we had raised ourselves.
Mr Beckham probably can afford it, having a flypast at the memorial for the veterans broke our bank but was worth it :p and probably more appreciated 😀 .
Glad to hear all involved are Ok. Next question is how easy is it to replace a canopy for that type and that quick?.
Especially if the aircraft is supposed to be participating in an air show, let alone getting it home again.
And here is one of the newly dedicated Sawbridgeworth memorial from late yesterday 14/5/06.
No images of the dedication ceremony as yet, I never got the chance to take my own but will post seperately ASAP.
A reason to watch…….Not the CGI, not the ‘action’, not the doubtful plotline
but Kate Beckinsale in that slinky nurses uniform with those seams in her stockings……..err sorry chaps, slight loss of dignity there hhhhrrruuummmppphhh :p
JDK,
If we could only have had a Lysander for the flypast as well 😉 Thanks for the link to your book, its on my ‘next thing to purchase’ list.
It seems we shall have a flypast after all. Additional money has been pledged to enable Maurice Hammond to appear with his P-51 Mustang, we are just awaiting confirmation from Stansted that the aircraft can operate in the area, well that and the weather permitting!. 🙂
Six days to go.
We have a collection of lighting from the airfield, this is alloy and not cast iron as the lights are. 🙂
Great images Colin, glad the rain held off for you 🙂
I too admire the Beaufighter, but the Lysander is another favourite type in my mind.
Are the schools in Hertfordshire really that bad at English, I mean they were not that great when I went to School there.
I think Scimitar hails from Herefordshire And I for one think the spelling police should take a day off 😉 .
Good luck Colin, I for one know how much work goes into planning and building memorials.
Unfortunately I shall be busy at Sawbridgeworth, we the HAMG, wish you well and please post some pics after the event.
Glad you had a wonderful day. I never get tired of East Kirkby, being a two and a half hour journey for me I have to limit meself to three visits a year 🙂
The atmosphere is right, the staff are terrific. Next time you go get on the airfield tour, just dont do it in November, unless you want to imagine what it was like to spend a twelve hour day out on the dispersals maintaining the aircraft as the ground crews did.
Good pics by the way.
