Yes, It was Allens Green.
Never did know what happened to it though, a friend lives in Allens Green, he may know 🙂
Pimpernel, I am a Ware lad myself, I wonder if we know each other….hmmm?
Thanks for the contributions.
It does seem that airfields albeit active ( North Weald ) or disused (Hunsdon ) are considered fit for housing on such grand scales. These two are regarded as being in Green belt but developers seem to see them in a different light, It’s as if somehow through their former use they can be classified as ‘brownfield’ and ripe for development regardless of aviation history, Ho Hum 🙁
Saw Sally B at a little after 2:15 PM heading north right over St Ives, I was at the Marshalls works in St Ives, (the concrete people , not the other Marshalls!)
Bodney?
Probably the pikeys had it a long long while ago :p .
If the woods were Scales Park then these were cleared back in the 1960’s, along with a substancial amount of ordnance I hear, I love these tales, I was once talking to a Gamekeeper from that area who swore blind the fuselage of a Lancaster laid at Nuthampstead for years after the war.
Our Travelling friends take anything, they took the Heinkel Engines that had been unearthed from Spelbrook near Bishops Stortford in the late 1960’s too!.
Best of luck!.
Good grief!,
First time I have seen that image, did it really come out of the water as good as that?, Ok, it was cleaned up of course but it ‘looks’ fairly sound too.
Amazing 🙂 .
We received confirmation of the Lancasters appearance at the Hunsdon airfield memorial dedication on May 22nd! 🙂
I believe the Mosquito Aircrew Memorial is to be dedicated there next weekend !0th April, Maybe Bruce can confirm this.
Thank you Geoff,
I will start looking into this right away. Many thanks
heh heh, heard a similar story about a main wheel dropping off one and chasing a bunch of ‘erks across the airfield.
Pity you have lost touch with him, theres going to be quite a reunion at Hunsdon on the 22nd of May for the memorial dedication ceremony.
Basil Cheverton of 1451 flight Hunsdon (1941 1942) lives in Ashcroft road Luton, dont suppose you know him too do you?.
Andy,
I believe thats right about the tricycle U/C, another snippet I have heard was the Havoc turbinlite was a handful to land due to the full Bomb bay of Batteries 😮
It’s been a long time since I made any models, but I suppose I could give it a try at converting it to the Turbinlite configuration, it would be a different approach to what I thought was a great aircraft.
.is this one operational or close to it? Or is it just for static display there in the UK? Would love to see those lovely pair of Merlins come life !
At a visit last year, I was given to understand that a Mosquito from Salisbury Hall will do Engine runs similar to East Kirkby’s Lanc in the not too distant future.
The only numbers I can make out are on the actual winding handle, these are: a small circle containing a letter V over what appears to be either an 8 or letter B.
the numbers 49139 13 DS1 are just about legible. not a lot to go on I’m afraid.
Yes!
Well done to the man, a worthy honour for him indeed.
