At this point I will be happy if even one of the ships gets brought back.

The most information that there has been on the “Super-30” upgrade for the IAF’s Su-30MKIs..

I still think the Phazatron radar angle is journalistic nonsense.

Also I am curious if India is intersted in the RVV-BD.

 Better than the Rafale Airframe ?

The Rafale for me is the ultimate multi-role airframe, its so much smaller than the Su 30 but can carry more payload. Can operate from carriers, can do Nuclear strike, and no slouch in A2A either. Its the pinnacle of fourth generation fighter design. Pity the French are worse than Russians when it comes to exports.

Pinnacle, with zero export sales. The whole carry more payload than the Su-30 thing is irrelevant. If it wants to carry a payload at any useful range, it will have huge, drag and weight inducing fuel tanks that take up external space.

Nuclear strike? Wopadedo. So can like every fighter design from Russia or the US.

EDIT: which isn’t to say the Rafale is not a nice fighter. Beautiful plane as well.

How exactly ? The F 16 was constantly upgraded and had superior avionics to the MIG 29 just before the end of the cold war.

Do I have to spell it out? During the entirety of the cold war, the F-16 would have been absolutely screwed if it encountered the MiG-29. The situation changed when the USSR fell, but had Russia not been in chaos in that decade (90s) then the MiG-29 would have received R-77 and new radar. F-16 would have once again, been in trouble, though not as bad as pre 90s, when the Falcon had no BVR and nothing like R-72/HMS/IRST.

The Bison IMO is very capable but putting it in the League of any Mirage 2000 is stretching it a bit too far.

Orly? 80s Mirage BVR was crappy indeed. Bison-R-77 combo is certainly better.

I have a Volkswagen, but if you ask me a fantasy question I would have chosen the Aventador. My question was like this had India had the money it has now and relations with U.S were at all time best, then may be India would have chosen the Eagle over the Flanker.

And it would have gotten an inferior airframe. Great.

Still can’t find an article I saved on the Israeli evaluation of the MIG 29, lets say they were rather unimpressed.

    And that proves absolutely nothing.

Malaysia(so badly want to can’t no cash:(),Hungary, Romania & thats not counting the countries that get rid of them in the 1990s.

Did it ever occur to you that the MiG-29 was made for a specific air force doctrine and supply system? When taken out of that element, it is no surprise it might be less desirable than an F-16 say. That says nothing about the MIG-29s design success however.

Its not just that the Fulcrum should have had better engines/radar to begin with and updates should have been on time. Its a great airframe wasted..
Welcome to the 90s in Russia. What do you expect? Country in great upheaval. The fact that Russia can so soon after the 90s chaos make something like the PAK-FA, speaks a lot.

Imho, the 2 seater will also be of interest to the RuAF as a dedicated stealth striker, successor to the Su-34 (it may explain why the Su-34 is not being procured in significant numbers).

    Anyways, good news all-round!!
    ]

I am not so sure about that Jo.
1.) Su-34 numbers are intended to be at least around 100-120 by 2020. That is rather significant for post Cold War RuAF. And no one said production will end there 😉 .
2.) PAK-FA is already being produced will full intent to package A2G munitions, so I think it will be ready for striker job out of the box. Perhaps not as dedicated as it could be, I will give you that.
3.) PAK-DA. A man can dream after all.

All in all the news fit into my hypothesis that FGFA will be a lot closer to PAk-FA than people think. And that is good news. They should streamline the two projects as much as possible.

The Su-27 / Su-30MKI comparison is inaccurate in this case.

    Baha, ok point taken.

Let’s move on to some Rus aviation news.

Be-200 production line is being spun up @ Taganrog, production will be capable of at least 10 airframes per year.

The J-10 what the MiG-29 should have been? huh?

The MiG-29 was a short range sacrifice all for performance air superiority project….how is the J-10 better in that role. Its flight performance is nothing extraordinary.

    Plus, I would take a modern MiG-29 over a contemporary J-10 😉

I do agree with a need for a one engine alternative for Russia and for exports.

I suspected the changes in single seat IAF PAK-FA numbers….keeping the airframe changes minimal will just make the process cheaper and faster for both air arms.

If we are talking about history, then the likeliest time MiG-29s and F-16s would have clashed, with both being operated by advanced air arms, was during the cold war.

And, not to beat a dead horse, the poor lil F-16 would have been extremely disadvantaged in both BRV and WVR. 😉

Anyways this argument has been done many times before, lets not pollute threads with it and other gross generalizations and misconceptions born of Cold War propaganda.

Al-31FM1, and yep, the engine swap does not necessitate structural changes.
    Su-27SM also has FM1.

I do not believe FM2 has been aircraft trialed yet. Could be wrong though.

EDIT: Maybe we will see FM2 on Su-30SM?
