When I graduated flying school in Dec ’42, if the bosses could place you where you wanted to go they would. I asked for A-20 Havoc , however at the time they had a greater need for 4 engine pilots ,so I ended up in B17s
It will only be in Sweden this year, I will see her at WC F4C/F4B on Juli 15th. 🙂 Right after I come home from Legends I will go to Sweden to see World Scale Championship radio controll.
Petter,
Were you referring to radio controlled planes? There is a club called the CONDORS in my area that fly RC planes. They had a B17 with a 10 foot wingspan, 1/9 scale, that blew my mind, it had flaps ,retractable wheels it also was able to emit smoke from an engine. There were many types of aircraft including a jet and a helicopter. I believe that the B17 is now in the Smithsonian museum. The owner told me that it took him 3 years to build and at a cost of $10,000, now he is working on a B24. Very well worth seeing
I heard this story about my group that occurred after I was rotated. A Roumanian officer got to Italy and gave info re: a POW camp. A pilot in my group flew to this Roumanian camp, escorted by P51s and picked up many US airman and brought them back to Italy. This was before the war was over.
Et voila! (Cheers Phil)

The mattress story reminds me of my B17 transition training in Sebring,FL in 1942. In the landing pattern, on the downwind leg, I had to power off the throttles and touchdown in a 10 foot circle.
My recollection is “six o’clock high,or low” always o’clock. Check your six seems logical, but I would think that it would be more likely to be used by fighters, because the action is quicker.
Just a shot in the dark, but was wondering whether any of you had photos of The Commemorative Air Force’s B-26, ‘Carolyn’? I know that sadly, the aircraft crashed tragically some years ago.
There seem to be relatively few around the web although I haven’t yet had time to have an in-depth look.
Any pictures that people wouldn’t mind me printing off, would be gratefully received.
Thanks.
Try armyairforces.com go to forums then to sub heading medium bombers. I’m sure that you will get help, Good luck.
My friends diary states that high altitude missions were flown at 30,000 ft, He was shot down by an “Irving” zero, from his C.O.s letter home

IIRC the ‘Belle’s last sortie was a milk-run. Not a very exciting last mission to make a film out of….
It was every pilots dream to go to breifing and find that the mission would be a milk run. First. last or all of them.

Alex,
Did you ever get my account of my trip to Reggio Emilia in June 2004 as a guest of their Historical Society? I can e=mail it.
My first flight was in a Piper Cub in 1941, I won a flight scholarship which enabled me to get 35 hours and a license. After that it was the Army Air Corps, I enlisted the day after Pearl Harbor
