    WH904 Couldn’t agree more!

I think to break her down to trailerable (made up word) road legal loads and transport her halfway across the country, then reconstruct her, will defeat the deepest of pockets.

I can think of lots of reasons why it should not come to Spitfire Corner and only one why it should.

    I’m a man of one.

I already have 2xSpitfires, a Fieseler Fi 103, 4xcockpit sections, a Merlin engine and their associated trailers plus other aviation related gear, including machine guns, starter trolly, you could say a hobby gone horribly wrong. They all need maintenance from time to time…….did I mention I’m a man of one?

Taking on this Shackleton would be madness of the highest order…….unless I can get help. Looking after her would be almost a full-time occupation.
I would have to run it as a business (as I do with 1 of my Spitfires) and all monies get ploughed back into a ‘Shackleton Fund’, which is what happens to my other aeroplanes.

Have to say, however, this is all conjecture. Only 1 person has to say ‘no’ in the planning stage and it ain’t going to happen.

So, WH904, CAF have already said they’re not interested and unless Wokka Bob (thankyou for your offer) wins the lottery, its between me and the scrap man.

At the moment my money is on the scrap man, or another third party who wants to break it down for spares recovery.

    Thanks Rich

The main problems this time round are:

Since the airport has been civilianised, they have put up a 10′ fence around the airfield. A 40′ hole would have to be made twice, one the military end and one my end, an active undershoot. Probably the only time to move it would be 2300h – 0600h not to disrupt aircraft. Would require the company who erected it to do the work, not a quick job = money.

The placing of the Shack at Spitfire corner would almost certainly interfere with the (newish) ILS localiser at my end of the airfield. It would require re-modelling/re-mapping of the ILS by appointed engineers. Could be done, however, = money (who would pay?) The Airport authorities may not want the hassle of it. If the Shack was already here, they would have ‘mapped’ around it from the word go, so would not have been a problem.

The grassed area at Spitfire corner belongs to the council, not a problem 15 years ago, it was suggested that I rented it for a ‘peppercorn’ rent. as it didn’t happen at the time, I saw no reason to go ahead with rental. Would have to try and reinstate this idea.

ISTR Council Highways originally reticent at the idea but came round with much discussion, would have do this again. They thought that car accidents may be caused by seeing such a large aeroplane close up. (shock and awe)

Cost of moving wings with engine mounted from main gate to Spitfirecorner, including crane.

Not as rich as I used be(!) so stuff like fencing, cameras and security would have to be done on the cheap for the first year, at least

I know the RAF boys would help as much as they can, over the last few years ago, they have been good to me, however, there is a line in sand that they would not step over.

    There it is, Rich
There are other things but I cannot think of, off the top of my head.

Fifteen years ago I approached RAF St Mawgan, when they where toying with the idea of closing. I had come up with a way of rescuing their Shackleton from the scrap man (first time round) The idea back then was to remove the wings from the inboard engines and tow her up the airfield, along the southern taxiway into the 31 undershoot, through the hedge, and onto the grass island, now known as Spitfire Corner. A local farmer offered the concrete base and help with the installation.
The RAF offered the hut for the Shack volunteers and help with its installation.

A lot of running around ensued and at the time, enthusiasm ran high in the local area.

The RAF liked the idea of their Shackleton moving to here as it would be seen by thousands of people throughout the year (as opposed to just the people who worked on the base) , volunteers to work on her would be easy to get, owing to its prestigious position, etc. Also it would be a further 2 miles inland away from the sea.

Just when we all thought the RAF were leaving, the MOD kept the technical and domestic site (with the Shack) and gave away the airfield. The RAF quite rightly kept their aeroplane.

    Today.

I was with the RAF the other day and it was suggested this might be the way to go (again)

I received the tender docs the other morning and have spent some sleepless nights ‘thinking’ over the saving of this machine.

Things were so simple back then, fifteen years later there are too many hoops to jump through and more obstacles to jump over. All the people I dealt with back then have either moved away or passed on.

He is also selling Bren gun carrier, but in the small print “This listing is for an original Bren Carrier used rivet, in poor condition. Contact me for more info.

There is no problem with delivery – We shipping worldwide !” er, no they don’t, you have to collect from the Czech Republic (!)

Some poor sod has bid £10.50 on a poor condition rivet, then have to cross the channel and drive several hundred miles to pick it up.

Any ex-air traffic people out there?

This is proclaiming its “pre-1942” and “very, very rare”, however, they’re still in use at some airfields to this day.:

I have seen a WWII glim and they have a large plastic dome over the top and painted dark green.
I always thought the yellow painted ones were post war?

I bought mine in near mint condition some 20 years ago at Hale car boot sale (£4), this is mine (needs a clean) :

    I think £392.45 is a tad expensive?
