You were lucky, when they asked me to go on September (17th?), I would have ended up with Dame Edna Everage, as you probably guessed, I refused:eek:

The first allied planes over Berlin after the breakout of the war were three or four RAF A.W. Whitley on a leaflet mission on October 1st, 1939.

    that rings a bell

I’d like to know more about this as it is often portrayed differently (in the British media).

    ..and history books…

I signed it back in the seventies and still would not divulge some of the stuff learnt since then, no matter what. There is a fine line here, giving information to the press can be the same as giving information to our enemies.(and we have got a few of them!)

Not only was that the first Spitfire over Berlin that I am aware of, I think it was the first Allied aircraft over Berlin if I recall correctly. .

Did we not bomb Berlin August 1940 in retaliation when they bombed London?

If there was a Stirling above ground ‘stored’ in a hangar ‘somewhere in Russia’ I’m pretty sure we would have heard of it by now. Nothing to say there’s not the odd bit floating around like a rudder, wheel or bomb bay door, but a complete aeroplane? I guess the complete aeroplane is still undiscovered on the bottom of a lake or fjord somewhere.

Could it be the one that Charlie Boorman flew in. Always getting James and Charlie mixed up.

On a learning curve here, didn’t know you could fit 2 in a Mk26! so to answer your question, “I don’t know!”:o

    No mate,

That was a 2 seat full size original machine, hopefully tucked up in its hangar.
    .
This one was an 80% single seat replica (Mk26?)
