Log extract from HMS Conqueror
Thanks for posting, didn’t realise the third torpedo hit the destroyer! No wonder they didn’t want to stop and PU survivors.

Looks like a dismantle than a smash it to bits job. Are they saving the cockpit?

Military reasons were given to sink the Belgrano as Woodward thought an attack was developing on his fleet. To the north was lurking the Argentine aircraft carrier which the task force had lost contact and to the south was the Belgrano with her escorts and also lost on occasion. If they had the option they would have sunk the carrier but the Belgrano was found first, after it was sunk the carrier withdrew to their 12 mile coastal limit.

Don’t know much about the Belgrano, only that as an asset to the enemy, it had to go. Didn’t matter which way it was heading, it was a danger to our forces full stop. Didn’t know about the sub thing, I was told the Navy was expecting a Frigate (or similar) rounding the horn to join the fleet, whether that was the reason?
However, everything Old Shape said about the mercenaries (approximately 40 from various countries) has a ring of truth as that story was related to me from 2 different sources when I was on the Falklands in 82.
Also the assistance the Americans gave or offered was evident at the time although some was overt (latest sidewinder etc) most was covert.
I once sat with a Ghurka on a ship (St Edmund?) and the stories he told me of their exploits was just jaw dropping, I’m glad they’re on our side!
Old Shape don’t they release info after 30 years? next year?
