Another downer for the Argentines is intel.

I was on the Island for 6 months 1982.

When we were told the Is. had been invaded back in UK, none of us had any idea where it was! We didn’t know their capabilities (only what we read from books), how many, what (serviceable) aircraft, ships, subs, men etc.
Our intel at the time was pretty poor due to the fact we (the military chiefs) thought the chances of invasion were low.
During the conflict we even sacrificed a Sea King to get our special forces into Argentina via Chile to get intel. I believe to warn the fleet of aircraft ops leaving coastal airfields.

What I’m getting at is 1982 we didn’t know squat, 2010 we know a great deal.

It will be easier to insert people (spies?) to monitor ports and shipping movements (with a military twist) also gathering info on aircraft movements will be on the agenda. There are probably people on the ground looking right now.

The intel will give us enough time to reinforce the Is. and we can be quite sneaky when our daily B.A. B747 arrives with 300 troops and only takes 50 home, only takes a few days to beef up defence with another 2,000 troops.

    Forwarned is forearmed

The other thing about good intelligence we don’t have to waste millions on bulking up the Islands defence and then bringing them home during ‘sabre rattling’

    just my thoughts

    Baz

I think what Argentina is doing happens to be illegal. International treaty allows a 200mile EEZ boundary off their coastline not 800 to a 1,000 ( which just happen to en-compass the FI ) On the same guide line we could re-draw our map to include the whole of the North Atlantic, ridiculous!

If Argentina does something stupid (again) I think warfare will include their mainland this time, the demolition of their aircraft by special forces, the hunting down and sinking of major military ships by our subs, pretty sneaky stuff. They will not thank the President for losing again. We will have to fight a different war [than 1982], but fight it we will and win we will (again)

I agree with what you are saying however, with the destruction of so many ‘speed cameras’ by disgruntled citizens, for they were blantantly used as cash cows, the government put warning signs up, Dayglo’d the rear and published all the sites, even the where the vans hang out. Thats people power, as they would not have done that ordinarily. I can see the same happening for some cctv cameras in certain circumstances but the Brits in general like to be looked after in this way so I don’t think it will become an issue unless it’s abused by the authorities.

Also, the locals are better armed, when the argies propped their guns up against fences when capitulating, a lot disappeared into various cellars, attics etc. Several thousand guns were laying around for months before we stuffed them into 45 gallon oil drums sealed them in with concrete and passed them on to Davey Jones. The argies would be dealing with the odd ‘Rambenny’ here and there.
