There are other pictures on the web of the arrows displaying, where one aircraft has a light on.
Courtesy of our friends at ‘Fighter Control’, here is one posted on Airliners. If I have it right, it is Red 4 here too, albeit a wholly different pilot.

Thats Red 2, Red 4 is behind to his right.

Yes they are wooden. The wheel behind suggest they are formers for the panelling of the engine nacelles being built alongside. The one on the right has writing which states “port inner’.

I believe that the RAF had specified that their fitters must be able to replace damaged tube sections with their existing tools. Surely teaching some of them to weld would have been easier!
I would guess welding in a field in France at a forward airfield would be almost impossible, whereas a spanner and a screwdriver would be more accessible?

When were bungee cords invented? I thought they were more recent.
Interesting photograph.
To me, the two foreground engine mount and fairings look like wooden ‘mock ups’ (templates?) whilst the third (left) looks (real) aluminium.

I always thought Vanguard would have made a good ‘bomber’ name.
Victor, Valiant, Vulcan, Vanguard………..
Perhaps at the time they realised there were only going to be 3 ‘V’s so Vickers used it on an airliner instead(?)
