Do you know airlines are always moaning and groaning about the price of oil! BA is the worst culprit, they seem to making plenty of profit, so I wish they would cut the griping.
The present oil situation is nothing compared to the oil crisis of 1974 when prices trebled and bought down that lovely airline Court Line, I wish Id had a chance to fly on one of their pink tristars or a lime green Bac1-11!
The DC8, I once flew back from Palma on an Aviaco DC8-63, was very scared to be on that long drainpipe. We flew out on DanAir on the like and was really suprised to be going home on that thing. I remember my family saying they bet that the aircraft was really old and we were all a bit apprehensive.
I hope not, although I never thought Swiss would. They now charge for meals on their European flights and quite outrageous prices too.
Yes and probably the service levels. I would find myself been given peanuts or pretzels on BA flights.
Not as such, but I believe the demand is there. British World operated the LGW to Freetown and Banjul service for awhile and had to increase frequency due to the demand.
Also I know this area quite well, I had a partner who worked for the Foreign Office in Freetown before the civil strife and a lot of business men in the Gambia used to have to fly Sabena Via Brusseld to London, when SN operated this route.
Running a flag-carrier is a bit different from running a loco! I hope BA stays true to its values and continues to provide a full service for its passengers. Not everyone wants no-frills!
Bmused, BMed have started Khartoum, so why couldnt they make a success of a Banjul with Freetown tag, operated by A320. The demand is there, like I said before, tourism is flourishing and not everyone wants to fly charter, also a proportion of VFR traffic and business people. High yielding as well.
Anyone recognise this and have similar memories?
Yes, they do. I have flown CDG to Nouakchott, Mauritania and CDG to Daker. Both on A310s
Are you Belgian? Notice how SNBRussels still fly to Kinshasa and Kigali, they are proud of their colonial heritage and still support these destinations.
In the middle of the ocean in a force 10 gale or in a cabin being licked by flames, I wouldnt much care, provided they could haul me over their shoulder to safety. Lots of cabin crew are pretty male and female, but I wish they had bigger muscles, it would make me feel safer!
I think one of the maiin differences is that countries like France and Portugal are proud of their colonial heritage and have a presence on the old empire routes because of pride, political considerations as well as commercial interests.
I cannot imagine France stopping services to West Africa. Not only does France provide these third – world countries with transport links to the rest of the world but also with huge amounts of aid and support.
The UK and BA on the other hand seem to ignore great parts of their once vast empire. Banjul and Freetown would be winners, as I said before. I also believe demand exists to start services to Guyana.
Noteworthy how BA feel no pressure to pull out of Harare but yet have abandoned Lilongwe.
Ever since BA inherited the DC10s at LGW they have gradually diminished services to central, west and East Africa.
I remember when Abidjan was served.
Age discrimination is rife throughout the workplace and I am not suprised to hear that it is especially so, in the, so-called glamourour airline industry.
I do not care how old the flight atendant is, however, I would prefer a nice big strong one who will be able to pick me up and haul me to safety, should the need arise.
I used to love all those 737-200s BY had, they went on to serve till a ripe old age. I remember flying on ‘Jean Batten’ and ‘Robert clive of India’ and ‘Capt James Cook’
As a kid, I always wanted to fly on their then all new 767-200 but somehow always ended up on the very noisy 737-2, now there isnt many 737-2s about I miss them and get all nostalgic when I see an FR 7372.
Dan Air and Air UK had a great history of serving local UK airports. Air UK was the only scheduled operator at Norwich for many years and also at HUY too!
