Yeah that was mentioned in the first post and I can remember it happening – I just thought I had read somewhere about a Lightning knocking down a Harrier whose engine had relit post the pilot ejecting!
Dont ever recall hearing that, but there was the incident when a Harrier suffered a birdstrike while on detachment in Denmark. The pilot ejected when he lost power but the ejection somehow managed to knock the engine back into life and the Harrier continued. A F104 was launched to intercept it but the Harrier ran out of fuel and crashed before it was needed. Could this be the same incident?
As regards Lightning XR763 as Camlobe says the pilot managed to shoot the castor wheel on the target which then proceeded to be ingested by the air-intake and into the engine. The devastation from which casued the pilot to loose both engines as he approached Akrotiri. The tail was kept at Akrotiri for many years as a memento / reminder and may well still be there.
Thankfully the RAF haven’t needed to get in that postion on to many occasions in recent history, for that we should be grateful. War is not a game.
There is always Lightning F6 XR763 though which did manage to shoot itself down. 😮
Link for Sunday service.
Last time I saw it it was a bread van though so not very disabled friendly, could have changed now though.
I’ll have a check around but it always used to be the case that the Cambridge to Saffron Walden bus on a Sunday would call at the IWM I think it still does. As for disabled access the C7 is operated by Stagecoaches Man single deckers with the odd Dennis Trident throwen in, they both have wheel chair access including carring ramps for easy drive on ability. It’s a shame to see the service go I had a good couple of years driving it, it’s amazing the people you would meet. 🙂
I’m not sure if Taffy is looking in here at the moment but I’ll pass on any comments. He has however given me permission to put the full story of his flight here :

Look in the Crewroom section. 😉
Sorry to bring an old thread back into the arena but it’s good news!
I can confirm that Taffy Holden is very much still with us and we have been exchanging e-mails recently.
A story with a happy ending. 😀
I’ve got film footage of the actual landing on DVD, it was taken from the end of a TV programme ( Jag, I think? ). The episode had been about landing a Herc on a carrier or something similar and they tagged the actually footage on the end just to prove it could be done.
Sorry Albert I dont find that post very suitable 😡
Now you’re starting to look at this realistically.
I think I’m saying what I’ve always said, sorry if that hasn’t come across.

I would probably add Waddington, Leuchars ( if the RAF agree to fill the tanks! ) and a couple more but it will be limited.
Albert, I have taken this into consideration when I say it, thats why I said I don’t think she’ll be seen at many small airshows. Most just wont be able to support her (in my opinion) by having a large enough venue ( which relates to people through door, which relates to cash, which relates to costs ).
So just to clarify what I think.
a). I think the first airshow has already been contracted and that will be RIAT.
b). I think she will be a big crowd puller with Joe Public but I doubt many airshows will have the facilities to cope with her.
Please except my appoligise Mrs Swan…… 😮
You should see how excited my mum and sister get at the though of a flying Vulcan, they love the things! 😀
I think those pictures are what my idea of heaven would look like James, fantastic! 🙂
Fair points Melvyn but I think we’ll have to disagree on the crowd pulling potential of the Vulcan. When I talk to people who are over 30 and I mention I like aviation nearly everyone starts to talk airshows and next to everyone has a Vulcan story – ask them if they would like to see one again and they say they would jump at the chance. Now I’m not stupid enough to think they will all come but if you take this over the population as a whole I think there will be a massive interest, the increase in numbers will not come from enthusiasts but from joe public in my opinion. I don’t think you’ll be seeing her at small airshows.
£10,000 – yes I am being optimistic, hoping that they can get at least some sponsorship! 🙂
I can see were you’re coming from with relation to costs but I actually believe that the Vulcan will be a huge draw at Airshow’s, I think the real issue is going to be what airshows will be able to cope with the crowds! I’ve got no idea what the actual cost to an organiser is going to be but if they manage to do it for say £10,000 then thats 500 people at £20 per head, I honestly dont see that being a problem, certainly not in the first couple of years anyway. I think some people get a bit complacent about some of the aircraft that they have seen many times, talk to jo public about airshows and nearly everyone over the age of 30 will talk Vulcans. I believe alot of the people who have driffted away from the airshow seen will be drawn back (if only for a short while ) by her presence, and think of all the dads who will want to show there kids and partners the mighty Vulcan that they remember from there youth.
I tell ya, they’ll be queuing for miles………. 🙂
I think robmac is closest, isn’t there already an agreement in place that the first display will be at RIAT Fairford? Something to do with them giving the Vulcan alot of backing a few years ago?
