re 787 lightning strike
Thanks black star.
I guess the question will remain, if there is a very high voltage lightning strike, this could re-occur.
re missed approach at Larnaca
Hi there.
Sounds fun your trip. I dont know decision height for the 737 at Larnaca, however the mountain range you refer to in the distance is probably the Troodos range which is North of the airfield, they are at least 40 miles away but look closer when you are in the air, you would have seen them to your right if flying along the coast from Larnaca to Paphos.
I lived there for a number of years and had an apartment on Mckenzie beach so I saw many missed approaches,at this time of year it is quite normal for fog to form out at sea.
During my 6 years in Cyprus, I witnessed many missed approaches and these were mainly Russian charter flights wher pilots appeared to have little experience with approaches from the SOBOS VOR.I always find Larnaca a fun airport to spot at simply because aircraft arriving on the Daros vor arrival fly over head the airport and then out to sea, some take a short cut and turn finals early and almost always make a visual approach, you see some pilots doing dog legs to lose height. it is rare that pilots make an ILS approach at Larnaca.
Hope this answers a little of your request
BMI Take over
Yes, heard it on the radio this morning. I wonder if its got anything to do with the deal reached between Europe and the U.S regarding an open skies policy. B.A. obviously want to protect its share of business on the transatlantic route, but if it does go ahead, what of the other routes BMI currently fly ? For example, will it mean the Leeds/Bradford-Heathrow route currently operated by BMI, be dropped ( B.A Pulled out of LBA years ago) ?? makes you wonder.
re
Hi there.
Not sure myself, however, the runway length at LBA is 7,400ft.
I was at LBA in 1984 when the Wardair 747 landed, as far as I remember, it flew non stop to Canada departing runway 32.
perhaps you can work your figures out from this.

re B.A Cabin crew strike
I say sack the lot of them, we get this irresponsible behaviour every year and its the customers who always suffer.
Lets face it, Willie Walsh might be a hard man, but look at Aer Lingus now, he is trying hard to make B.A. profitable.
Lets assume B.A. lose millions from this strike and sometime soon in the future, staff cuts are required, could Mr Walsh then blame the cabin crew for helping to lose their jobs ?
Unions ! who needs them
Assuming the rumours were true about B.A moving there Gatwick ops to Heathrow, how would they get all the slots ?
You have to blame in part our aviation industry for making so many mistakes during development of aircraft.
The only real success story was the Vickers Viscount which was developed to meet many airlines needs especially the american market, however, the VC10,Vanguard, Trident were never great sellers as they were tailor made for BOAC and BEA. the makers made a huge mistake in not offering different versions acceptable to other non British airlines. With Concorde, a replacement should have been on the drawing board within 5-10 years of its first commercial service, the cost would have been very high, but it could have been done as a joint venture with other manufactures around the world. We would still have an SST if this had happened,
Yes, Concorde became a little unreliable towards the end of its life and we can all moan or dream for one to fly again, but it wont happen.
I think the main argument here is that the UK along with France had an SST transport in service from 1976 to 2003, and now there is no SST, its as if we have taken a giant leap backwards, I think this is what angers people the most.
I think we all have to accept, Concorde will never fly again, and as a previous poster said, ” airbus have more important things to think about than helping to get a concorde flying again.”
Keep on dreaming
Of course, we would all love to see Concorde fly again, frankly, I dont feel this will ever happen. The chance came and went. B.A. were very stubborn, my opinion is that they should have accepted or even considered Richard Bransons proposal to share the plane or allow him to buy one or two of them.
One thing that really angers me though, B.A. decided to drain all fluids etc and its reason for retiring the Concorde was mainly costs and fallout from 9/11, however, they never thought ” what if there is a sudden or gradual upturn in air traffic and demand for Concorde, if we keep them in long term storage, power them up occasionally we can preserve them until such times they are needed again” Why was this never considered. Ok there is a cost involved, but surely this should have been considered.
Meanwhile, our much loved non flying ex B.A. concordes are slowly but surely becoming in poor condition and B.A. seem happy to let it happen.
Shame on them
hold back the insults
Guys, why insult the poster of this thread, he is an aviation enthusiast like all of us here. I am sure, when you are spotting at the airport and you see a number of fire engines going down the runway or taxiway, the thought of emergency landing comes into your mind. The poor chap simply asked a genuine question and got slated for it. Lighten up chaps.
I will have a good laugh, if somewhere on a news channel we hear an FCA 767 did actually make an emergency landing…..shame on you !
Re Air Malta
Hi.
Yes, I have flown Air Malta twice between Manchester-Malta-Larnaca and was quite impressed with the service and the friendliness of the crew
The aircraft had good leg room, on all flights the plane was on time, there was free news papers and the food was good.
I think you will enjoy your flight with Air Malta and would be interested to hear what you think once you are back here.

Save the concorde or not, this aircraft will never fly again. Lets leave her to enjoy her retirement, she has had her time, turned many heads along the way, and she bowed out of service gracefully and with the respect she deserved. She will fly again only in our dreams. It would cost far too much to even attempt to prepare her for flight, then there is spares ( which we dont have any more as airbus has ceased to support it ) and the engines are decertified.
Why do we keep asking these questions about Concorde.
Lets leave her alone. we should instead have a moan about our lack of aircraft industry, yes, we make wings for Airbus, but why did we stop the RJX project and why does this country not build an airliner.
For me, the first jet airliner the Comet, the first gas turbine prop liner, the Viscount.
The first rear mounted engined Caravelle, the 707 and VC10 and of course, ther 747 and Concorde.
My best flight was by Royal Jordanian L1011 Tristar 500 between Amman and Kuala Lumpur in 1993, Great aircraft, the smoothest most turbulance free flight I have ever been on. Good service by the cabin crew although I got fed up with beef curry being served on my Royal Jordanian flight between Larnaca-Amman and then the same meal again on the next leg between Amman-Kuala Lumpur……and, you guessed it, Beef curry on the return flights aswell. Lovely plane the Tristar JY-AGD and I think she may still be flying in the USA or perhaps stored now. I know she went to American Trans Air, not sure of her status now.
I feel at some point B.A. will have to order some A380s, Maybe not now but within the next 3-5 years. To not order the A380 will be like giving B.A.s passengers away to Virgin and Emirates,Qantas and Singapore Airlines ( all these airlines compete on some of the same routes that B.A. flies.
B.A. seem happy at the moment to use the 747-400s and 777s on its long haul flights but some of these aircraft are ageing ( early 747-400s ) so the question is, do B.A. continue to operate the older 747-400s in the fleet or maybe sell off around 10-15 of them perhaps order 10 A380s initially.
Personally I think B.A. will feel a kick in the teeth when Virgin proudly start A380 flights while B.A. are offering 747-400s, nothing wrong with the 747-400, but I think B.A. should take some A380S for use on the long haul routes.
Anyone agree with this ?
