Memories of 25 years of shows/spotting
I-BILL P51 at Greenham Common in 1977, my first show and first warbird and a excellent color scheme, no boring camo;) .
The PFA rally at Cranfield in 1990?? the year the Connie N494TW operated to Flying Legends. After its return it taxied in and i was on the edge of the taxiway with the Connie coming to a halt infront of me, the ground shuddering with the ear splitting noise, EXCELLENT!
Seawings 2000? being at Lee-on-Solent for the day. The Canberra doing just enough to climb over the fence on the end of the runway on departure! Also the Albatross turning over my head at 500ft after a low run!
Also being at Farnborough during the pre show practise week and the SU-27(fast jet thing) doing a tail slide over the town center at 500ft!!He was slightly off the display line!!!

Aaah the ‘bushe in the 50’s. Sadly Im far too young to remember. It was indeed Londons main charter airport with a 6000ft main runway.Home of Eagle,Airwork,Dan Air,Westminster Airways and the likes. Even took BOAC Comets on crew training aswell as BEA Viscounts and Ambassadors. Was Heathrows diversion airport and took the first Aeroflot IL14 flight on diversion! Also used alot by the US Navy(based Daks and C-45’s) and by the USAF(C-124’s,C-54’s,C-130’s etc). Closed in 1960 because the lease had run out on the part that was requistioned during the war and the govenment had spent millions on Gatwick and wanted the airlines to go there.
Reopened in 1962 by AVM Bennett of pathfinder and BSAAC fame
and is still a GA field. I actually live in the circuit. Wish it was Vikings and not AA5’s going round!

There is certianlly none listed in my 2003 airline fleets.
I think the last couple flying were the former French Airforce test aircraft that were sold in 2000?
A great aircraft remember the CTA ones at Gatwick and hordes of Air Inter, EAS and Corse Air ones at Orly in the mid 80’s.

Please can they start flying from Farnborough to CDG,AMS and FRA!!!
I think there is still room for more routes, there are still many that low costs dont fly. Low cost flights from London to Frankfurt,Munich,Dussledorf, Paris,Amsterdam are very thin on the ground. It would be nice to have a low cost that actually flys somewhere I want to go. Unlike Ryan Air whos sole destination of interest(i.e. somewhere with aircraft to look at) is DUB! Shame they cant fly into Le Bourget for Paris?

A bit of a supprise, although I knew they were looking for a 3rd UK destination. Their 2nd (ex Virgin) A340 is due in service in the next week or so.
They are very much still in the red, although slowly coming out of their problems of last year. Another A340 should put the long haul into profit and stop all the sub charters.

Yes its a Flamant, I think its owned by the same guy who brought the Shackletons for a museum that never was.
They were used by the French for twin training, nav training and transport duties up to the early 80’s.

Sadly it was well before its time. Its teething problems(espically the noise) could have been overcome had Westlands been interested.
Eventually it found its way to Cranfield college who broke it down into its components for instruction. Parts survive at the IHM at Weston.

If it was Supermarine I would guess that it would be Chilbolton, their main flight test airfield. Its been pretty much untouched reciently.
As for langley the Ford factory closed several years ago, no merlins seem to have surfaced though.
I have heard the same sort of stories, railway tunnells, burried B17’s near Popham etc.

682al, wrecks & relics 3rd edition gives the Javelin as ‘probably’ being XA629 which was the FAW4 prototype. it was formerley kept on the base for display purposes.

Keep up these excellent pictures guys. I would love to see some from Lasham as it would have been my bigest local scrapie, had I been alive at the time!

    F Fairey
    G Gloster
    H Handley Page
    I Hawker
    J Parnell
    J Reid & Sigrist (1947)
    K Avro
    L Saunders Roe
    N Supermarine

    U Miles Aircraft
    V Airspeed
    W G & J Weir
    X Percival

As far as the photos I have seen they were very much for prototypes only rather than the more modern class B use for production aircraft. They mostly just used one number at the end.

I guess some have come from Sabena/Virgin Express? But that does not account for them all. I was up there for a few hours this afternoon and it was quiet around 2, there were even a couple of biz jet departures so the slots do exist.

As far as I have heard its just a 777-300, plus the normal Airbus stable A318,A319CJ,A340-600 plus maybe a A330. I would imagine the aircraft list wont be finialized to around easter. I just hope its better than the last abismal show.
This years show is also likely to be very bizjet orientated with a special bizjet sales park on the old TAG ramp Mon-Wed. Which suits me because I love bizjets:D , got to really living here.

I have just come back from my first visit in its new guise. Lots of visitors today.Very impressive, but perfer the Duxford type working museum.
Loved the Grahame White hangar but it could do with some padding out with exhibitions and a few more aircraft, but I guess its very new.
Milestones was good too but I found it a bit ‘gimickey'(turntable, mossie on a perch etc). Liked the chopper exhibition, although what relevance the Skeeter has to the RAF I don’t know?? Was slightly dissapointed that the top gallireys haven’t changed in about 20 years. One glaring omission in terms of aircraft is a Dak, or any transport aircraft really. Would love to see the one at Aldershot brought to Hendon and put inside. They made such a massive impact over many years.
I didn’t try more than a cup of tea so no catering comments.

I think Cameroon are banned due to not paying charges at Gatwick in the past.
