Apart from John Boyle, who being married to a Brit and having served his country over here for some years, is almost naturalised British, we don’t have that many yanks here these days.

My area of interest is an earlier war and earlier aviation but I do have a favourite picture from the 1940 era. That being pilots of 32 Sqn. on the grass in front of their Hurricanes.

I used it a lot for news back in those pre-internet days.
We used to book holidays that we found on there–or was that Teletext?
My ex-wife once found a small apartment in Greece through a Teletext ad and we had many a happy holiday there.

I also planned many a Sunday at Old Warden by carefully scrutinising
the weather pages. We used to get a Summer in those days too…!!!

By today’s standards it was basic, but like much else, seemed ‘cutting edge’ at the time.

Horace Smith-Dorrien didn’t do his future career prospects any good when he chose to fight at Le Cateau on 26th August 1914.
He probably saved the B.E.F. from destruction though.

Another famous Sherwood Forester was Albert Ball–attached RFC.
Just to think, it’ll all soon be 100 years ago.

I think we need to be a little careful about patting ourselves on the back about how we’re now living in an enlightened age.
Yes, it seems that many of the victims of this are now ready to come into the light, but sadly, they only felt able to do this when the perpetrator was past human justice.
And with reference to the comments of my engine builder that I highlighted above in post 212, I feel that much of the truth of that–however unpalatable, stands.
After all, the nature of sexual desire doesn’t change, and until it’s possible to have a frank and open discussion about much of that, then I fear that these people will continue to be able to operate with impunity.

Oh, and I used the expression ‘into the light’ after some consideration.
Sometime ago, I met someone who had suffered an extremely nasty sexual assault, age 11. That person used the expression ‘into the light’ to describe returning to World after many years of being in the shadows in the aftermath.

I saw a really, really, really nice Indian straight four combination the other week in Norfolk.
Totally original, unrestored and original but sadly not for sale. I couldn’t afford it anyway but my, my, it was a beauty.
