-The Sikorsky S-38
makes its UK debut at Flying Legends. An American twin-engine eight-seat amphibious aircraft, it was sometimes called ‘The Explorer’s Air Yacht’ and was Sikorsky’s first widely produced amphibious flying boat. In addition to serving with Pan American Airways and the United States Army, the Sikorsky S-38 was owned by numerous private individuals, including aviators Howard Hughes and Charles Lindbergh.

I’m not a Legends visitor, but if anyone does go, try to get a close up look at this.
The inside of the passenger cabin is beautiful, complete with wicker chairs and a drinks cabinet.
The rest of the line-up looks pretty good too.

I was fortunate enough to spend the weekend as a guest of The Memorial Flight Association on the airfield.

Good lord. Anorak madness. What on earth do you, Andy Lying in Bed, know about how dangerous it is, not being a pilot?

I’m being chastised for voicing a thought that any experienced pilot would immediately have upon seeing that video, by some rivet-counter whose own self-appointed expertise, according to his profile, seems to consist of being “an aviation nut…married to Vanessa…modelmaker…aviation historian…”

I am definitely not an “aviation nut,” just somebody who has made my living and survived in the flying business since, in fact, just before Andy Lying in Bed was born. Vanessa, you have my sympathy. Buy him a nice model to make and he’ll calm down.

Interestingly, a selection of these images were used in a book entitled ‘Pictorial History Of The Fleet Air Arm’ by John D.R. Rawlings (Ian Allan, 1973) and credited to Capt P.C.S. Chilton.
The one showing the two Martlets in front of the Farman has been cropped somewhat on the modern Flickr account–the version in the book has another Martlet off to the left.
Still very good stuff though.
