Signing these petitions may not achieve much on the face of it (eg Bomber Command Memorial petition) but is doesn’t do any harm either. It at least shows veterans that there is still an interest in their history and it brings veterans families together (very important). I have seen the effort the French made to build and maintain their Typhoon Memorial. It is very impressive considering that it does not even commemorate their aircraft or their pilots. It is an embarassment that the nearest thing to a Typhoon memorial in the UK is a reconstructed Typhoon supplied by the USA. I can’t see any reason why building memorials would have any adverse effect on the lottery budget. Perhaps less money could be spent on useless “diversity” projects, on educating illegal immigrants or on the bloated 2012 Olympic Money-Pit? If anyone wants to build a Memorial to the Queen Bee or the Vickers Warwick then I wish them luck, I would sign their petition and I hope that they succeed before the relevant veterans are gone (my dad served on Warwicks).

    Win a million!

Whilst the underlying intention is laudable, the very fact that you think this is an appropriate way, and a good time to submit such a request casts serious doubts about your suitablity to oversee this project.

As you concede, it has liitle chance of being built (for ‘little’ read ‘zero’) which makes this just gesture politics and an thus a completely non-productive exercise.

Sorry to sound so negative, but thats how things are right now, and the same reality applies to the ‘Vulcan’ petition.

I’ll pay you a million pounds if you can find where I have said that I am “overseeing” this project… I am simply trying to raise some publicity for a project started by other people. And yes those people are “getting off their arses” to raise private funds for the memorial and to do a lot more. I see no reason why lottery funding or government funding should not be spent on a memorial to a particular type of aircraft. Such money gets spent on much less important projects. The French built their Typhoon memorial with government support. No reason why it can’t happen here despite such cynicism. The purpose of the project is (obviously) to allow veterans and their families to commemorate the Typhoon at a location accessible in the UK rather than trekking across the Channel. To think those vets risked their lives for such cynicism…

Thanks for the link, Mark12. The Napier report is slightly misleading. The memorial is in Noyers-Bocage which is a few kilometres from Villers-Bocage. We are campaigning to build a similar memorial in the UK that would commemorate all aspects of the the Typhoon’s service.

Err, isn’t there one at Hendon?

    Best wishes

It is a long time since I have been there. There is a Typhoon there (sadly not completely original) but I don’t remember seeing a memorial to the Typhoon squadrons. We are campaigning to build a stone or marble memorial. The favoured sites at present are Manston, Tangmere, Thorney Island or possibly at the RAF Museum Hendon. If the latter then it could be linked to the preserved Typhoon in some way.

Piper Cherokee Six G-BBSM (IIRC) at the Coventry Airshow on 12 August 1979. It was fantastic value for £4.00. Is there any way that I can find out what happened to that Cherokee?

    Liked it

I thought it was excellent. Authentic atmosphere with some interesting characters and plotting, realistic but exciting descriptions of combat and the technical detail is excellent. David Bruce’s other novels “Prototype” and “Assassin” are very good, too.

Just buy a copy of “Gun Mart”. There will be plenty of stockists who sell .303 bullets and they will not be expensive. They are commonly used for target shooting. Do not try to buy any hollowpoint or soft-point version as they can only be used for hunting in the UK and must be specified on a Firearms Certificate. I recall that the original “Dum Dum” bullet was a modified .303 bullet used by the British in India.

    Cees,

It would be possible to collect Typhoon parts in the UK if people/groups were willing to part with their items. Unfortunately they are not so another Typhoon will have to remain spread around 🙁 As for the wreck you mention…if it is the one that I am thinking of then as far as I know it doesn’t exist anymore as it was dragged further out to prevent causing damage to local fishing vessels and was destroyed in the process. Any more specifics on the one you are thinking of?

I do know of enough parts in existence to complete the main part of a Typhoon and the wings can be remanufactured as they are a simple design (and there are enough crash damaged parts to provide vital information). One day there will be a second Typhoon….1 is just not enough for me 🙂

    Seconded.

There’s one at Hendon next to a tired looking Tiffie. They might let you measure it. Cosford don’t have one in their missile collection.

my .303 Lee Enfields- I’d sell them if i had to as i could always find a replacement later in life if i wanted to and had the money.

    …..hope that helps!

Don’t be too hasty. I sold my father’s shotguns and have now tracked one down to where it is for sale in a gunshop. It’s valued at five times what I got for it and it’s not even a particularly special gun. I’m still gonna try and buy it back though. Service rifles have also increased a lot in value. My advice: no man should ever sell his medals, his badges or his guns.

I am always dismayed to hear of someone selling family heirlooms. I have sold some in the past and now deeply regret it. The way I feel about the remaining items is that I did not buy them, I did not risk my life to accumulate them and they belong to posterity not to me. It’s my duty to catologue them and leave information so that whoever gets the items can put them in context. The money you get for these items is soon gone and then what are you left with? If veterans like Neville Duke are having to sell medals because of crime and to pay for operations, that just shows what a denegerate society we have become.

I seem to recall that the Turkish army dropped paratroopers on Cyprus in 1974. I might be wrong, though.

I have read a few accounts of strafing by German bombers plus there were the “tip and run” raids in the South-East that the Typhoons were used to combat. Regarding Dresden, I am sure the account of Mustangs strafing the ruins is in “Slaughterhouse 5” by Kurt Vonnegut. He is American and he was there so I would accept that as an accurate account unless someone has evidence to contradict him.

Can anyone confirm the provenance of this item? Is it a battlefield recovery or a scrapyard find?
