“Castle Bromwich……former aircraft manufacturing plant….now a car producing plant….concrete car parking area laid over a filled in hole….Spitfires, spares and Merlins….swear it’s true, guv, saw ’em pushed in there…etc”Anyone care to elaborate on this sketchy outline?
I heard the same story about the Hawker factory at Langley. The Ford Truck factory was supposed to have been built on a foundation of Merlins in crates! But the question for all these stories (at least in the UK) is if there was shortages of everything after the war, why would they bury good scrap metal?

Ah memories of sitting by Hatfields fence at lunchtime watching the prototype 146 (G-SSSH ?) with a long probe on its nose doing test flights. Also the last Hatfield open day and seeing the assembly hall. All gone now. 🙁

My reply would word for word be the same as Flat 12’s. Unusally I wasn’t on line yesterday!
I am interested in all aspects of historic aviation but ‘glaze over’ when discussions get too technical for my old brain! The old photos are the real treat. I do view most posts, honest. 🙂

Some of the site was bought last year, including an underground car park. No use trying to see the containers being opened with a spy satellite!

Your memories wasn’t faded(!)
There was a Spit and a Hurri there, Dulux gloss painted for many years. The Spit was a F.21 IIRC for some period.
Cheers
Now both replaced with Full Sized Models (Plastic?) as at the RAF Museum. A good compromise.

Try asking on the Concorde SST forum. There is a section for trip reports etc and some are able to give details including crew names. It’s a bit far back though. 🙂

Bought it on the last day of my holiday in Scotland last Summer. Read the first 80 pages without putting it down until ‘last light’ over the Moray Firth stopped me. Brilliant.

Will you do a photo ‘deal’ with Hello or Flypast? You could let Snapper be your agent. 🙂
Congratulations anyway.

I expect you have seen the Jabiru website which lists the engines prices and accessories included.
http://www.jabiru.co.uk/price.html#2200
Engine Finder website at: http://www.findanengine.co.uk/findanengine/index.html
But you need to ask for the type and get a quote.
Interesting article on Franklin Engines website on the pros and cons of buying a rebuilt engine. http://www.franklinengines.com/rebuilt.cfm
Some small useful engines at http://www.compactradialengines.com/engines.html
with prices.
Walter engines are now LOM from Moravia at
http://www.moraviation.com/
I think the problem with getting a price is that there are several versions of each engine and many variations in the price! You will need to decide on HP etc then ask for a quote.
Good Hunting.

A ex Lancaster tailgunner I once knew (he died 15 years ago) was credited with one nightfighter destroyed and one possible on a completed tour (30 ops?) He told me very few others in his squadron got one while he was on ops. Gives some idea of the odds. Daylight would have shortened the odds for fighters as well as bombers of course!

I believe from talking to a member when I was there in the Summer that they do restoration work on one or two days during the closure. A letter to the museum should find a contact.

Manston is now a civil airport. There is the famous Spitfire & Hurricane memorial museum open all the year round with a website at:- http://www.spitfire-museum.com/
But there is a Manston History Museum nearby which opens daily only in the March- October time. They had a website but the URL I have is now a dead link.

Surely somebody of ‘Skybolts’ experience (see his profile) could use his CAA contacts to trace Mr Melton? Or has he paddled his Walrus across the Wash? 😀
