LHR around 1953/54. The control tower and Queen’s building had been opened by the Queen, but next to it was a large open car park in which our school outing coaches parked. There was a 3′ high fence seperating us from the aircraft. A Sabena Dakota (DC3?) was having it’s radar checked by a man on a step ladder! The public address announced that the new Bristol Britannia was departing on a proving flight (to South America?) Can anybody fix a year for certain?

I wonder if the Fort Paull ‘operators’ will be expecting the enthusiasts that they out bid, to volunteer to help them get it there and maintain it?
But perhaps if they could spend ‘a five figure sum’ they will be able to pay for all that too?

    Spitfire Ace – THAT music….
Just thought some of you may wish to hear that marvellous piece of music played out as Peter Brothers flew ML407.

I also defy anyone not to get emotional just hearing the music.

The piece is entitled: “The Humming Chorus” from Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly.

Track 15 on the following link will give you a snippet of the 3.05min piece.

I suspect that BOAA will be dismantled and roaded via the M25 and the A13 ( both large dual carriageways) to Tilbury docks and then by sea to Scotland. Going all the way north by road will mean far smaller lumps. 🙁

The Avro York restoration must be one of the ‘epics’ of the British restoration scene. For about 20 years now there has been steady work going on every time I have been to Duxford. I believe that the aircraft that were moved from Lasham (including the York) were dismantled so they could pass through the Dartford tunnel on their way to Duxford. The fusalage is now restored and stored in a corner of hangar 1 by Concorde, while work goes on the wings. I expect that lack of space while the Space and Air building is completed will mean that the wings will not be attatched for a while.

Judging by recent press reports that ‘ many accidents are caused by trousers every year’ perhaps the aviation press should encourage us to wear flying overalls instead. Or are they even more ‘dangerous’ 🙂

Is a belly landing at an International airport necessary these days? Remember the foam carpet facility at Manston years ago?
Blocking a busy runway (in the case of Stansted the only one) should be the last option. If the U/C collapses on landing then nothing can be done, but if it’s known in advance there could be a diversion?

The more worrying point of lost luggage is the security angle. Say it’s realised that a suspect person has got on a flight but the deparure is held. All the luggage is unloaded but his bag is missing. Do you A: Stop all other flights on which the bag could now be or B: Wait and hope that the bag (and the plane) turn up somewhere? The number of bags on a flight should tally with the number checked in, so presumably another person’s bag went astray as well. 🙁

I can well remember seeing (and hearing!) 3 of these beasts running together at Silverstone and Goodwood a few years back

BRM ran 3 litre V12 engined F1 cars in the late 60s-early 70s. The noisest place I ever stood was behind 3 of them in the paddock!

On an Easyjet flight last year, the flight safety briefing contained the following. “In the event of loss of cabin pressure or oxygen in the cabin or toilets, masks will drop from the overhead”
The thought of somebody F****** and bringing down a mask in the loo nearly made me laugh out loud. 😀

I’m sure that I read last year of a man (in Russia?) who had built a replica Stuka and proposed to do dive bombing demos at airshows. 🙁 I cannot find any details of it now. If anybody remembers the story and can fill in some details, this would be the place to put them.

I would have thought the Dept. of Home Security will be a little nervous about letting that fly. 🙂
