Motor Books – Airfield histories and plans

The plans are the ones previously produced by ‘After The Battle’ and now by Red Lion in the Plaistow Pictorial Series.

I believe you can also get copies from the RAF Museum as well, although they have to be ordered.

    Yes, I think you’ve nailed ’em – XV103, ZA142 & the cockpit of ZA144 🙂

    Except………………….

Sorry to reply after so long, but if you do google into St Athan, then you will find a 4th VC10. if you follow the line of the North-South runway further North, you will find the St Athan Picketson site where Crash and Smash are located, you will see that they have the remains of ZA144 (incidentally this is now on the south of the airfield!)

That is definately XV103 being dismantled, as I was there at the time.

If the engineless airframe at the VC10 hanger is ZA142, then that makes the mystery cockpit ZD235 (or vice-versa) which was scrapped around the same time.

I would guess that the google picture was taken about 2002 as the DARA super hanger, Personnel services flight, and the all weather pitches are not built, and the sports stadium is still there!

Nope, It’s more about the mission rather than the airframe

That’s pretty conclusive then, superb illustration of how close they are.
I really wish I had paid more attention to the old airfields when I worked at Cardington (virtually gone) and my 8 years at Henlow (lots of the older buildings now gone).

Just been Googling! Found this several year old quote on a forum.

Thurleigh – I used to live nearby. A couple of miles to the east is Little Staughton. At some time there was a plan to join the two airfields together to create the longest runway in the country – that would have been a sight! If you drive around the area, at one point a road has been sunk into a cutting with concrete bases in the middle to support a runway overhead that would have led to Twinwoods.

    And another.

When Thurleigh was initially being developed as a research centre after the war, the original plan included a 5-mile runway extending out to Little Staughton and with its maintenance area close to Twinwoods Farm. Defence cuts put a stop to all that, but just South of Thurleigh a narrow country lane still suddenly splits into two carriageways as it passes through a dip where a taxiway to Twinwoods was due to have passed across!

And just found a .pdf link to WWII airfields of Bedfordshire. WWII Airfields of Bedfordshire

Cheers for the link Noel, just about to sort it myself!

Not sure where I got the information from to be honest, it may have been Action Stations, but living in Bedfordshire it was well known about.

There seems to be a little disparity between whether the runway was to run to Twinwood Farm, which is clearly not aligned with Thurleigh’s main, or Little Staughton.

I had heard that the dip in the road was an underpass for the proposed taxi-way to a maintenence area at Twinwood Farm, my picture doesn’t really show too well how the country road suddenly changes course and dips quite sharply.

Fantastic stuff, before my time there (98-01), but memories of a good time all the same. I have some pictures at http://airfieldspast.fotopic.net/c422885.html

And it’s in Sleaford, she wants it moved to larger premises so the tail can be mated and the construction of the wings can start. It is indeed painted as P7350 and the report said it was being built to flyable standard!

    Newarks Rattler P3

The Rattler is in the workshop next to the Vulcan. It is not normally accessible to the general public unless they are on guided tours such as the enthusiast days, however when the weather is good you can often see it from the open doors.

Could someone confirm (or deny) to me that the dayglo identification letter on the fin of the Jet Provost in picture No4 – the one nearest the camera (at the beginning of this thread) is an ‘M’.
If it is, i have just found a picture of our aircraft in it’s SoTT days, XS186 (8408M) !

Are there any more pics of these JP’s at Halton or Shawbury out there, which might include XS186- 8408M ?

Thanks for posting Vicky Ten !

    Hope these help!

G-APYD Comet 4B ex Dan Air I believe!

The Argosy is not huge, bit larger than a Varsity I would guess, the Belfast is getting inside Cosford too!

Haha, that would be interesting, would make them all look the same to the average punter though.

Interesting to see they plan to bring the Argosy, Comet, Andover and Varsity inside, that’ll be two Varsitys under cover and the only Comet and Argosy, at least at the moment for the Comet

Are you on about a specific Comet mark? as there are/were also Comet’s hangered at Duxford and Wroughton.

Great to see 2 Varsitys undercover and the Argosy.
