Indeed there is a multitude of them. If you are in the area on sunday, pop along to Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre open day, I shall be doing my best to answer questions about the former RAF Station.
I am pretty sure nothing at all remains of the original RFC Anwick. The landing ground was situated a mile NNW of the village church at OS TF110515, which places it quite a way from the garden centre or farm (and current airstrip). Vehicle access was said to be from the Ruskington fen Road (to the North).
During it’s construction trees were felled and telegraph wire was run to the site from Ruskington village (and not Anwick!). There were no permanant buildings, but the airfield covered 54 acres, and had basic lighting from petrol soaked rags. After WW1 it was abandoned, along with RFC Leadenham and the original RNAS landing ground at Wellingore.
With the onset of WWII it was rigged as a decoy for RAF Digby (K-site), and was manned by 8 Airmen who were billeted in local houses, apparantly being abandoned in August 1942, along with the other newly redundant local decoy sites at Dorrington, Branston fen and Willoughby Walks
Looks like is is probably about to be resprayed, or possibly have some modification done. They regularly used to fly from St Athan to Filton for respray after major services.
A few from Cottesmore a few years ago. First is XW924, haven’t got a clue about the subject of the rest, though someone at the time said that they thought the airframe was ex USMC!!
As you probably all know, Leconfield is Normandy Barracks these days and is the home to the Defence School of Transport, (and the Seaking Det)
The Tower is used as the Driving Examiners offices, and that is where you congregate before and after the tests.
Somebody much more knowledgeable than I can qualify this but the BBMF are covered by the MOD. Im not sure if they are ‘insured’ as such as I can imagine it would cost a fortune to insure all equipment and I would hazard a guess that the military would rather just pay out of their pockets as and when they have to as opposed to insuring.
You’re right on that one, that’s how the MOD’s liability works. A big pot of money is what i’m told!
What Mosquito?
They arent doing something about TA639’s paint job are they?
Bruce
Cockpit bits, daresay there were a few other bits n bobs knocking around as well. I really should have taken my camera, like I said though, it’s only a warehouse, a very full warehouse at that.
There was also a Swiss Vampire/Venom (quite hard to see) in a dismantled condition.
JDK, I’m guilty of not paying as much attention as possible regarding the Swordfish. It was skeletal, and in a dismantled state, with the main part being the cockpit, with the wing mounts top and bottom attatched and about half of the rear fuselage attatched. No serial i’m afraid, but I could try getting in touch.
Dave, regarding Hess’s aircraft, the bit I saw was the short access ladder, the other remaining bit’s were crated, and there wasn’t much. With regard to public access, it is staffed by 3 civilians, and is located on 6 site at RAF Stafford. It is basically a warehouse, and they are in the process of putting everything on computer. Small parties have been admitted in the past, and the staff are very enthusiastic about their job there, however it isn’t a museum, it is simply a store, and the reason I got in was for work. I can give you a contact number though, and you can but ask!

53/3, Hurricane shot is good, some awesome posts on here.
Thanks for that.
Just a little off the topic – if you ever get a chance to play a PC game called Call of Duty, in one of the missions you a soldier on board a Horsa Glider just as it crash lands next to the Pegasus Bridge, very realistic !!!!
Cheers

Interesting, my wife’s grandfather, Cpl Ted Tappenden was on the first glider with Major Howard to land at Pegasus Bridge on the opening hour of D-day, I watch the project with keen interest.
Sorry to be a ‘pane’, just wondering if Upvc or wooden frames are better?
