thanks for the photos guys!!
Now this thread is truly alive :very_drunk:
I agree acquisition of a new aircraft to recapitalise airforce is completely the right thing to do.
As I’ve said, there are no guarantees money will be available in future either (though I’m sure Scooter would say something along the lines of “when economy is better, they will buy F-35.” :p ).
If there’s any offensive action against Serbia, a few MiG-29Ms with R-77 won’t stop the foreigners from rolling Serbian AF over.
Of course the only group capable of performing any offensive action is NATO and they’d have F-22s + F-15Cs + AWACS + EW providing top cover.
I know. I didn’t mean “threat” as in 6, or even 36 M2s would be able to successfully defend Serbia from full scale NATO attack. More like M2s armed with R-77 are generally a threat to anyone flying over. Even a little Mig-21 Bison is. :eagerness:
no problem.
There is no reason to worry bout Bulgaria as they are in NATO. Its more about Serbia getting its airforce and aeronautics branch back to present, and forward.
I was personally mainly worried that Serbia would be talked into buying dirt cheep old F-16s or even F-4s.
Of coarse, like I said earlier, having any number of Mig-29Ms in inventory armed with R-77s is a threat to any foreign intruder.
Now if they sign a deal in two weeks and forget to buy R-77, but instead get more R-27s, I’m personally going to quit this forum, and my passion for modern aircraft all together !! ๐ก
now, can someone post a nice photo of M carrying R-77s so i can calm down ๐
this one below is too naked.

did you completely miss this part?โSerbian budget is poor for maintenance and use of modern military aircrafts,โ explains Radic. โThe exploitation of a squadron would annually swallow at least third of the whole budget of the Serbian Army, which is about $250 million. Company MIG is not able to guarantee supply of parts and maintenance, which would put Serbia at risk and cost of testing the aircrafts and the problems of integration of modern systems.โ
The biggest enigma of purchasing new aircrafts will be the payment method, which nobody has officially mentioned. Besides the acquisition of aircrafts is political decision, they also cost. Purchasing new wings with additional content (training, spare parts and equimpment), accoring to experts, could cost up to โ EUR 1 billion.
spending 1/3rd of your defense budget just for some shiny new MiGs is not cheap.
– Its not about shiny new migs. its about slow investment for rebirth of one air force. And not temporary covering holes of an outdated air force either. Decision was made to start a new project, if you will. That’s why 6 planes to start with is more than plenty for the next few years at least.
I’m not disagreeing that on the paper Serbia does not have money for six Mig-29Ms. Of coarse we don’t ๐
Its 100% true that we better give up on air force altogether, and invest in hospitals, and new factories. But that is not going to happen. Decision to buy additional aircraft was made. No one knows how and when they will be paid exactly, and how long will that drag out. Deal might as well include Russian airbase in the middle of Serbia for all we know at this point.
I’m glad they just chose to slowly, and on a small scale rebuild with new.
****
Here is today’s article from same web page. Talks a bit why they are sticking with new Russian technologies after all.

best regards
18105 crashed in 2009.
The thing is, Serbia really needs only 6-12 jets. Maybe HuAF wanted to sell more than few in a batch. It was a bargain at that price though. Also, how much is refurbishing+ basic upgrade for one of those birds?
Although I like and agree that JF-17 or J-10 would be very good foe Serbian AF, and would last long time, and be upgradeable, I think Its a hard step for them to make over Russian deal. Like Fedaykin said, integration, would be kind of starting it all from scratch.
Do you know how easy and quick it is for Serbia to get Russian hardware implemented in any scenario. Its like the same language/same frequency. They have so much long time business friendships and trust. From Military, energy, transportation, to agriculture. Thats why Mig-29M2 will not be an expensive purchase for Serbia, I’m sure.
as for J-7,
It will never happen anywhere in balkans. trust me. ๐
People there would take down the government with their bare hands and lynch them if it gets announced that any money is being spent on such an old design, no matter when it came off the production line.
There are grandparents there who worked on early mig-21s there that would get an instant heart attack. Thats balkan mentality.
They would have much easier time accepting the announcement of stupid and wasteful purchase of six F-35s or Su-35s, hate and complain about it for the next 3 decades, but they would accept it. With J-7s, they would not. It would be national embarrassment in front of the world to purchase something like this in 2013 or later.
Trust me on this. This goes for Croatian people too.
Serbia has 3 upgraded Mig-29s today, plus one which i think is not flyable and is used for parts probably (might be wrong on that 4th one) All 4 are grounded.
There is no mystery about it.
The only thing they could do is look for old Mig-29s from other countries who won’t bother fixing them anymore, and get few more old frames like that. Then they have to refurbish them, and maybe do small upgrades. They would be ready by 2015 earliest. That about puts Serbia in 2015 where it was in 1988, except that these frames will have way less time remaining then they did in 1987/8
Poland kind of did this, but that was years ago, and made more sense. Deal was free, and happened quite fast if i remember correctly. Difference is also that Poland along with upgrading migs bought other new aircraft. India as well also needed a lot more aircraft, so they upgraded migs, and bought new aircraft a while ago. Not in 2013 or later.
So you can’t really compare Indian reason for upgrading Mig-29s and Serbia who has 3 grounded old Mig-29s, and nothing new at all.
Getting Mig-29m2s, plus few more Mig-29As for refurbishing does make sense- I agree, but ONLY IF Serbia needed more aircraft at this time. I don’t think it does. Its not going to air war agains any air force any time soon.
Temptest 2000,
it makes no sense
1. mig-29 costs alot more to operate being a twin engined heavier airplane
2. they already have mig-29s, in fact they even upgraded some..and even those aren’t flying. if they can’t afford to fly and fix regular mig-29s, what makes you think they can afford and fly newer mig-29s?
Well, its your opinion, and you are entitled to it. To me it makes no sense to invest in old design and technology when rebuilding for future.
If Serbia should buy few planes, they should buy new frames of 4th generation orabove.
Also, you keep saying that Serbia has already mig-29s, and that it should just upgrade more of them. Dude, here are 4. Thats it. 3 refurbished. 4th one .. (someone please fill in)
How long do you think those frames will last. till 2020 maybe. They are old cans now, and they will be good for nothing in 2020. I can’t see even you disagreeing with this. Just won’t be safe to fly them anymore.
Here is todays news (after a log break)on G-4MD, which supports the idea that Serbian airforce is planning to gradually get back to present, and shoot for the future.
Not just buy some inexpensive old cans that can perform duties today.

I don’t get how two options are being here metioned as J-7 or Grippen. Two different worlds, two different … worlds.
If Serbia choose not to lease, which is understandable, how can they possibly get even used Gripens for better price than overall deal for 6 Mig-29M2s, considering Russian relationship with Serbia.
and again, even if today practically J-7 or Mig-21s can perform the job, WHY ON EARTH would ANYONE even consider buying these old machines if they are starting to slowly renew the airforce, get bac to present, and look forward to future training, and upgradeability, as well as cooperation.
Serbia is about to invest in airforce again for the first time in years, and is planning on some future modern existance. Small step – just 6 new frames. Much wiser than 14 old frames when you are starting. They would need to be on crack to start renewing the airforce by spending any money on j-7, or similar. Even getting J-10s as anything Chinese would be a huge new integration ballgame. If anything, they should just upgrade mig-21s like Croatia, but imo even that makes little sense.
6 Mig -29M2s make s perfect sense (if you can afford it), and a good start. They can add another 4-6 in few years if it becomes possible. The experience, and training, and maintenance Serbian airforce will gain is something to consider when spending money equipment.
Mig-29m2 + Upgraded G-4MD is logical step forward, if you decide to make a step forward. They did.
Refurbishing Mig-29As is slow process and short term solution. What is tit, like 10 year life extension or something like that. Besides, Serbia would have to spend money on someone’s old mig-29s first and than smend more money on refurbishing them. Then in few years, they would be in the same situation.
What kind of policing can Yak-130 do if Mig-29, Mig-21, Grippen, or even fast flying comercial jet gets to Serbian airspace for whatever reason. Not only speed, but it also lacks altitude reach. 12,500m is not enough for intercepting neighboring countries existing old fighter fleets. Even comercial jets fly over 11000m often times.
again, i like yak-130, but it is not an interceptor.
ps
my mistake, it is a medium+ fighter, not small/medium like i said.
I agree with with Serbia needing funds and credits for hospitals, factories, and getting economy back on track way more than for military. Thats just normal. But since they have to get something soon, I’m sure the deal they are making with Russia will be the least costly to Serbia, and might even create new jobs in this industry.
F-5s, Mig-21 upgrades?? Why would anyone invest anymore in such ancient technology and waist anymore time and money on such old frames. I don’t get this at all.
Yak-130 is one of my favorite planes, but it cannot be a policeman. Its too slow, period. It cannot fly after Fast flying comercial jet, or Mig-21, or Grippen, and warn it to turn back or stay out of Serbian airspace. For policing the sky you need supersonic airplane, and a bit longer range radar than yak-130 has.
I would love to see Yak-130 in Serbian air force as well, but I think that developing Super Galeb further makes a lot more sense for such role.
S-300, S-400?? Well thats all super for defending you sky, but you cannot police your sky with it. Besides, I thought S-400 isn’t for export. I might be wrong about it.
I still think that if choice had to be made this year, financially and practically Mig-29M2 was the best choice given the available.
So, if your cash-strapped friend was about to get a huge bank loan (say, his fifth over the last two years) to buy a new sports car he clearly doesn’t need, you would say to him: “Look at it like an investment, you probably won’t use it for the next 20-30 years. And be content you (hopefully!) get at least a new car, not like the old bangers your neighbours will possibly get…”
It just doesn’t make sense.
As for protecting the land so we can be poor on it. I ask you, how will a handful (even a full squadron of fighters) help Serbia to do that when every one of its neighbours is in NATO and the main threat comes from (potential) internal separatists?
I am all for a respectable Serbian military – I just don’t think this helps. For the air policing role, however, the MiGs are wonderful… wonderful but overkill.
I don’t see how Mig-29M2 is an overkill for policing, and protecting Serbian sky. Its a small/medium multirole airplane fast enough for policing. It can be easily adapted to NATO requirements should Serbia enter NATO in the future. These are also newly built frames that will last a while. And the price – GUARANTEED LOWEST POSSIBLE- probably will be traded for other goods. Otherwise, Serbia will be renting Gripens, or some other western used frames for high price, until ..when??
What is your suggestion they should buy?The only other option I see that is better priced are new frames from China. FC1 or J-10 perhaps.
As for credit, I’m sure it is going to be favorable, nearly symbolic, incorporating many exporting goods from Serbia for good price. Serbia might actually profit from more military cooperation with Russia, specially if factories are built for upgrades and maintenance for range of aircraft, and Mil helicopters. Many countries could use overhauls, frame life extensions, etc. I think that’s the plan anyway.
We’ll know soon anyway. Details will be announced soon after they visit Russia to sign ( May 23 if i remember correctly)
Its oldschool bird with new technologies inside and out. This radar, and R-77s are nothing to laugh at by any means. I’m pretty happy about the choice! I also hear rummore about additional 6 frames in 2014!! I hope its not bs.
Mig-29M2 would mean more then likely these are some of the Algerian examples. So not exactly new but I presume cheaper then new build Mig-35, beggars can’t be choosy in such matters!
Still rather dubious about the veracity of the announcement as I can’t see how they could pay for them unless the Russians are offloading them with seriously good credit terms.
six already build Mig-29M2s are most likely ones intended for Syrian AF, which deal is now dead. And yes, its a good credit, and cooperation where possibly Serbia might be a equipped to service and upgrade other countries’ older Mig-29s. Majority of the first stage of this deal will be signed before the end of the May when President of Serbia, and minister of defense visit Russia.
Looks like its pretty decided on now. Six Mig-29M2, and two new radar stations.
Pilots are already undergoing training for this new bird in the making according to article(s)
BELGRADE, May 6 (RIA Novosti) โ Serbia is planning to buy several MiG-29M/M2 Fulcrum fighter jets from Russia, and Serbian pilots are already being trained in flying the aircraft, the countryโs First Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Aleksandar Vucic said on Monday.
http://www.politika.rs/rubrike/tema-dana/Mig-29M2-na-srpskom-nebu.sr.html
I’m for one happy about the choice, although Mig-35 was obviously my first choice.
are there major differences between Mig-29M2 and Mig-35 aside from radar range?
