Always a difficult balance as who you want to attract to a museum. Unless you have unlimited funds, you
want as many people through the door as possible. A museum can’t exist purely on visits by aircraft
enthusiasts. Most museums would like more room, to get everything under cover, but it’s just not always
possible, either due to lack of funds or planning considerations.

Sad maybe, but also inevitable and arguably necessary. Surely even you don’t remember Alan Cobham, do you??!!:D .

One or two years before my time 🙂 although he did appear at the air displays on Southend seafront back in the 1930’s.
As well as everywhere else it would seem. Before the H&S industry had been invented.

What people want, is variation. Those of us who can remember airshows from bygone years, will
have been thrilled by displays from pilots who made it up on the day. It’s all so formulaic now.

I do have one little gripe, and it’s not only me falling foul of this apparent “scam”

Outside of Joes diner, there is a sign promoting a deal, something along the lines of a burger
and drink for £x. I only got caught by this once, queuing up for 20 minutes to be told this
applied to the Mess restaurant, and I should have looked at the small print underneath.
The theory being that after having queued so long, you will have what’s on offer, rather
than walk away empty handed.
The same happened to a woman in the queue behind me on Sunday, and no doubt to many
of those in the queue behind her (which stretched outside of the door), whom had they known
would probably bought a burger from one of the mobile concessions outside. I can only assume
this is a deliberate attempt to mislead people, as that would seem to be the result.

Based on the numbers at NZ shows where KA114 flew I’d have to disagree. There were several thousand people present for the Mosquito Launch Spectacular show, not to mention the larger-than-normal crowd at Wings Over Wairarapa. There was also widespread coverage of the aircraft in the mainstream media.

I am sure a Mosquito would add extra numbers to airshow attendance numbers in the UK as well. For the first year
anyway.
Though I doubt that it would attract the same sort of crowds we’ve had for the Vulcan’s final year of flying,
with sell out crowds, and thousands watching from every vantage point. The same applied last year with the two
Lancasters we had last year. They were both unique events.

We could perhaps do with more formations. BBMF with the Red Arrows etc…

A few rather distant pictures from today at Duxford where Classic Wings provided the aircraft for the Remembrance Day Poppy Drop.

You weren’t parked up by the naughty field were you ? 🙂

A couple of mine from Sunday

I got the impression that they underestimated the strength of the wind. The Rapide came directly over the crowd line
and a lot of the poppies came down on the other side of the A505.
Still a lovely occasion.

What a lovely day at Duxford.
The two minute silence while we stood near the control tower, hot chocolate and a roll at Joe’s.
Then the service in AirSpace, followed by the poppy drop. I’ve not seen so many people there for a long time.
Not having attended any airshows for many a year.

As an aside, does anybody else remember being sat-down in front of the ‘school television set’ and waiting (in pre-video days!) as the on-screen clock ran-down to the plinky-plonky piece of music called ‘popcorn’ I think?

Strewth, that brings back memories. Schools TV and Radio, those were the days.

There was a film on the BoB Hall mezzanine. Has that gone?

There used to be a ‘son et lumiere’ presentation in the BoB Hall itself, feature lighting the aircraft and telling the story. That has inexplicably been discontinued.

It was very annoying being kicked out of the BoB hall, while the film was being shown. No doubt frightened that
someone might trip over in the gloom ?

Anyone else here going to Duxford tomorrow (remembrance Sunday) ?
We usually go to Stow Maries, but it turns into a quagmire once there’s a bit of rain, and we’ve had a lot of rain

We thought we’d go to Duxford instead.

It would be lovely to see a Mosquito in the air again, although I would guess that it would have limited appeal to the
general public. More for the aircraft enthusiasts I would say.
