Does this include gliders? Otto Lillenthal made a few good flights I believe, and didn’t George Cayley as well ?
Perhaps we could suggest that the governement encourage and subsidise more airfields and private flying, this would help lower house prices for first time buyers?
I had heard rumours that it would be based at Kidlington when completed. I would wonder if the Engineering staff have the experience to support warbird flying though.
I used to work there in the 80’s ( CSE Aviation ) and most of the noise complaints were based on the number of takeoff/landings and aircraft flying circuits. Since the ab initio flying training moved to Florida I understand the amount of traffic has reduced considerably which has led partly to the financial misfortunes of the company operating the airport. I haven’t heard any rumblings about noise recently.
And by the way, a Hurricane doesn’t make a noise, it makes music !
Pilot:
“Look …that’s the lowest I’m going….you’ll have to change from a wide angle lens if you want close ups….”
Things are kept secret to avoid giving a head start to anyone who may use it against us. A bit like how we gave our nuclear development information and research work on supersonic flight to the USA who then refused to share their info ‘on the grounds of national security’. Also, it may be that when it’s added to the secret list it has a time period set – and it won’t come up for review until that period expires.
As for actual secrecy…..I heard a story once of a young airman who, being heavily in debt, copied technical info pages from a Lightning servicing manual ( The Vol 1 ) and sent it to the Russians – offering to sell more.
Apparently they returned it to the MoD….updated !
OK, a crude stab without the calculus ( mass varies along the blade length as does speed )
centripetal force = mass x acceleration
acceleration = V squared / radius
so centripetal force = mass x V squared / radius
crude assumptions:
centre of mass is 25% blade length from the hub centre and mass is 25kg
this comes out with a radius of 0.4 m, a speed ( V ) of about 6 m/s and a mass of 25kg
This works out at 2156 Newtons, 220 kg or 484lbs centripetal force.
Anyone agree/disagree ?
It strikes me as strange that the FR pod is painted in primer as well – these used to be removed when a/c went for servicing/painting. I live near Brize so I’ll have to keep an eye out for it. I still think the original green / grey was the best scheme ( ‘B’ ZA141 1983-84)
A De Havilland Dragonfly has a max speed of 125 Knots. It would depend on payload but its take off speed I would guess is somewhere around 70 knots.
Thanks TMN, This is one of the Mk2’s which arrived from Germany ( ex 18 Sqn I think ) as they wore the green/grey camouflage with a black underside. the Navy ones were green all over – the red nose / tail band being added to either denote training aircraft or increase visibility. I was told that the Mk5’s were returned to the Navy for operational use having suffered losses during the Falklands campaign.
Doing an airshow at Griffiss air base in the States I got talking to a US chopper pilot. I sat in the driving seat and went through some of the switches and preflight checks with him. After ten minutes answering my questions he offered to let me fly the thing…..I had to confess I wasn’t a pilot but an Engineer who had worked on helicopters. I had accidentally blagged a free go in his kite.
I believe they are due to be replaced by Airbus tankers in 2009.
u/c up…crane to take the weight and lower a/c onto the airbags and as a safety measure in case they fail.
Best I’ve seen was at Brize Norton in the mid 80’s. They hosted the Royal College of Defense Studies and they turned up the heat a bit for the air display – to the point of sonic speed flypasts at low level !!! Another memorable one was in the same era watching the Reds practice in Cyprus – about as low as you can get without a wheels up landing !!
Why hasn’t Hollywood made a movie about THAT?! 😮 😀
Maybe an English film company could do a version, based on an RAF pilot, a Spitfire and an Me 262……….. 😎
“Basically sir, we got bounced by four Messerschmitt bubble cars before the Triumph Spitfires turned up and saw them off”
