Thankfully there are saner heads in argentina that realize buying an outdated plane known for its horrid maintenance record, a plane whose spare parts would be costly and hard to comeby, if far from a sane purchase for argentina.
Unless of course you are y20 Bacon, in which case you’d think it sane to purchasethe j20 instead.
First off all, I am not Y20 bacon or whatever his name was…. I visited Tandil AB (home of the Grupo 6, Mirage) in December 2012, and talked a lot with crew and maintenance. They don’t want the Mirage F1….. and hell no…. sure not any aircraft from Russia and/or China! They prefer, right now, the latest Mirage 2000-5 or even Kfir models like those from Colombia. Remember, they look right now for a temporarely replacement….. The idea behind is to have a complete new aircraft that can replace both A-4AR and the next Mirage III replacement all together. No one there was thinking about any aircraft from China. That’s what the Government wants….. not the AF. So that’s why I think and belief no Chinese built fighter will end up in Argentina. But hey….. it’s you’re free choice what you think, so don’t tell me what I have to think and what to write down.
And even if Argentina wanted to buy 40 JF-17 and 4 ZDK and some S300s, where’s it going to find the money to do so?
Given dire economic conditions in Argentina, we might as well be debating equipping Mozambique’s Air Force with Flankers or Ireland’s Air Force with F-22s.
You seems not to know that the current Argentine economy is in better shape then most of the European nations. They Argentine Government can buy easily without problems 24 to 30 new fighters, but simply refuse that because they have some “issues” against the military. As a mather of fact, most people right now in Goverment have lost relatives in the 1970’s due military operations against leftist guerillas. So, they spent as less as possible money to the defence. I am sure, that when the Kirchner clan moves out in few years, they will rebuilt their armed forces again.
Well, I am pretty sure that Argentina will not end up with Chinese crap…. sorry to say. The current Kirchner clan ( a true leftist @#$%) will make space in a few more years, and there will be no further interest in any Chinese material. Although the Mirage F.1M is outdated too….. it could be a good alternative for the next five years to replace the old and tired Mirage III/Finger fleet. Sure the Argentines will managed to find another few extra Mirage F.1s and later replace them all together with a new aircraft (2020 – 2025 period).
Well, i’m talking often with Atlantique 2 head engineer, and there should be loads of interesting things to be said (including its easy overperforming P3I)
Well… please share. I think you might be right, the Atlantique has been often seen as a “less performing” aircraft compared wuth the P-3, but I am sure that the type is much better then known. The only thing is, when it comes to exprotation, the P-3A/B have been supplied under FMS, so cheaper to get them then buying the factory fresh Atlantique II. I know, after the 1982 Malvinas war, the Argentines wanted to have four of them to replace the ageing SP-2H Neptunes, but found a cheaper solution to have the second hand L.188 Electra’s.
Take care,

Herard a rumour that Greece is to lease Atlantique 2s as well as some frigates from France.
Is this true?
I note on Scramble’s Greek orbat page that the P-3B’s of 353 MNAS are listed as withdrawn from use.
I really get sick of this, the answer on the question from “thobbes” hasn’t been given but only stupid long chit-chat about Greece and Turkey and the possible aggression between them 😡 I think you guys should start another topic. It seems indeed the French offered the Greek four Atlantique 2 aircraft with a possible buy after a period. The americans already offered to have four later model P-3’s for the Greek, who only needs to pay for the overhaul. It seems that the French offer is the most likely one.

Back too topic pleazzz….. so any confirmation that Greece will indeed lease some Atlantique 2 aircraft? That’s very nice, good aircraft and leasing is a good option. Good news (if true).

I call this…. “Mother of all flying jokes”….. whhaaaaaa what a stupid joke it is. :p
The French are making use of RAF and USAF C-17’s to bring the hard needed material to Mali… now, I am wondering if the French will not look into buying a few C-17s for their own, as such opertions like Serval is showing that the lack of such strategic transport is a nightmare when you want to deploy troops and material fast!
Better tell the IISS to pick up their game then.
EQUIPMENT BY TYPE

Tanzania, North Korea are flying J-5’sas of 2010…
Well…. perhaps in storage, but no one is in flying condition or flying actively. If we going to count the aircraft as well which are in storage, then I would say the USAF still has plenty of F-4’s…. all stored at AMARG, but still…..
The topic says Oldest Combat aircraft still in service, the MiG-17s are long gone in Cuba. Storage not count…
Cheers
Ecuador still operates Strikemasters..
No way José…. Strikemasters are long gone in Ecuador, sure 3 years ago last few remaining aircraft withdrawn.
Cheers
Lot of non sense and incorrect information here;
– Argentina is not flying the Mirage IIICJ any more, the last remaining aircraft in use with CEASO ( a test unit) was withdrawn from use in early 2004.
– There are no MiG-17s flying anymore in Cuba, the last ones were withdrawn from use as “trainers” in late 1980’s!
Both Argentina and Pakistan are still flying the last remaining Mirage IIIE’s in the world, true classic aircraft.
There are still several Chinese built J-6 flying in the world (Bangladesh. Tanzania and probably few more). Some people mentioned the F-5E’s from Switzerland, but they came from late 1970’s, so…. not that old 😮
The CF-5’s from Botswana on the other hand are surplus Canadians…. some built in late 1969… that’s vintage enough. Perhaps there are still some Jastreb/Galebs flying, they are combat capable and also very vintage.
No idea about the Hunters in Lebanon… the last years they have not seen, perhaps still on the official list of operational, but not 100% is they are still flying?
What about the Brazilians? If I am correct, they too are looking for a jet trainer to be used as LIFT. If I am correct, BAe Hawk Mk.2 and M.346 are likely contenders.
Cheers,

Hello all here,
I am looking for good pictures of Rwandan Air Force/Army Air Force AerMacchi AM-3 light aircraft? Perhaps they have been posted here once before, but not sure.
Thanks,
TigerII
All are talking about the fighter aircraft, but what Serbia is in need for are reliable helicopters (medium CSAR/SAR and transport) and transport aircraft to replace the ageing An-26s….

I thought this was for the Military News 2012 thread… not a discussion which aircraft is better…. F/A-18 or Su-30
