what spares and ammo? the whole idea of the FAB buying and assembling the Gripen E was to have rights to build and sell the Gripen to other nations. After all they’re paying nearly $ 900 million over the initial contract cost that was announced ($5.4 billion instead of $4.5 billion)..what parts other than the radar and IRST does the UK build for the Gripen E?

The radar and IRST being Selex developed could theoretically be replaced by other versions from other countries. Though it is a fair point that the integration and development of replacement radar and IRST (which could be eliminated itself) would be a cost to be added on. If Argentina could bear that cost then there is no reason why it is not possible to do that. the UK has not got veto rights over the Gripen E itself- merely over the Gripen E equipped with the Raven ES-05A and Skyward IRST.

The project is between Sweden’s SAAB and Brazil… as a matter of fact Brazil will add some own weaponry on it…. so nothing to do with those imperial Brits. Argentina can order the Gripens without too much problems, replace those Raven ES-05 system with a Israëli one…. and problem solved.

BlackArcher is right on this matter.

    Saludos!!!

I doubt that very much… more wishfull thinking from the Israëli guys then from Croatia. No fighters would be a good and cheap solution, but I did understand that the Croatians want to have at least a modest fighter and the Gripen lease/option to buy is very actractive for that.

I think that for now the helicopters are more likely the main issue, as they need a smaller helicopter for SAR/Medical transport fast, specially when tourist season is comming and the new Mi-171’s are too expensive in flight hours for that.

    Cheers

Sweden might be the first client for EMBRAER Super Tucano

On the military front, Embraer’s EMB 314 Super Tucano turboprop light attack aircraft is set to make inroads into the European market as part of an overall deal with Sweden’s Saab for the delivery of next generation fighters for the Brazilian air force. Saab is likely to supply Brazil with as many as 36 of its Gripen NG fighters in a multibillion-dollar deal that includes several technology transfer arrangements.

As part of that overall deal, Sweden is considering the purchase of Super Tucanos as its main training aircraft over Saab’s own 106 Trainer aircraft. Embraer hopes to extend the market for its Super Tucano and other light military aircraft to Britain.

Please…. not again!!! I will start myself next days some topics; Dominican Republic vs Cuba, El Salvador vs Honduras or Portugal vs Spain. Those kind of topics are really not interesting.

Totally serious. What about a K-8 is so much better than the A-29? A jet powerplant?

I agree with you on that part…. A-29 is far much better then the Chines toy plane K-8.

It was posted by Charlie Jaguar over at ForumDefesa. You can see the AFM’s “box”/article on imageshack.

EDIT: Charlie Jaguar also contacted one of the authors of the article, who confirmed that “it was a commercial demonstration offered by Agusta Westland.” (also posted on the first link above)

    Best regards,

Thanks Get_it, so…. the flirt with the A.109 (nowadays the AW.109) is continue…. the very first interest in this type dated back in 1990’s!!! Seems that there is still some specific interest in this bird :love-struck:

    Will continued….

    Obrigado!

There was some news on Air Forces Monthly of August 2013 about AgustaWestland showing a AW109 in Montijo to pilots and officers of the PoAF. But that’s probably all that was; a promotional opportunity by AW.

It’s not unrealistic to see the Alouette III being replaced past 2015. Especially since only a small number of helicopters would be required.

That’s interesting, do you have any more info on that AW.109 show-off at Montijo? Any copy of that article?

Thanks guys for your reply… it seems most of you are very sceptic and the future looks very bleak :apologetic:
Last year (2012) I was visiting Beja and talked with several officials/officers and despite the struggle with budgets and the re-organisations within the Portuguese armed forces, they do have a vision. I have not talked about the F-16, it’s status or what will come after it (or not), as they are only focus on what they fly themselves (ESQ552 with Alouette and ESQ103 the Alpha Jet). The FAP has been looking for a very long period to replace it’s venerable Alouette IIIs but without success. Although they have been looking always to factory fresh helicopters, it seems that the replacement would be sought at the second-hand market. No type has been mentioned, although it was clear that both Eurocopter Ecureuil (AS.550/555) and Agusta (Westland) A.109’s are still the favorable types. The current idea (I say idea, because they depend on what is possible with funding…) to have the Alouette III replacement in the year 2016!
About the Alpha Jet, I spoke with the Cmdr. of ESQ103 and he was clear that the Alpha Jet will be replaced by a turbo-prop engined aircraft. He told that the PC-21 was a very likely candidate…. but everything depends on time and budget. However, the type that will be bought will replace both Alpha Jet and Epsilon, while the TB.30’s will passed on to the AFA (replacing the Chipmunks). FAP is already looking to get some spare wings (or parts) from French Epsilons, which are now available since the French AF withdraw almost the entire fleet. Although not confirmed, many spares have already been transferred to Portugal (but I need to have it confirmed).

Time will tell what will receive a ‘go-ahead’ next years, although I have the feeling that helicopters might arrive much faster then most people belief

    Best regards, Bom dia.

The biggest issue I have with this thread is that every time the Falklands/Malvinas is the point of stupid discussions. Personally I think that the Argentine AF needs to have some way of modern air defence fighters to come up with it’s close neighbours Chile and Brazil. Upgrading there Air Force (and other assets) has nothing to do with those islands. The Mirage III needs to be replaced by a more modern air defence aircraft for the defence ot it’s boundries… not to invade any of the islands. Every time when something is comming up with the subject fighter aircraft for Argentina, everybody is starting the 1982 issue over and over again. Sick! No one in the Argentine AF is speaking about any new weapon system for use against the Britiish, it’s a complete bull**** talk here. The Mirage III/Dagger’s must be replaced by a better aircraft do defend the capital and other area’s. Also…. why not talk about trainer aircraft and additional hard needed transports for the Argentine AF. Right now they are even bigger problems….. to train enough pilots for future… and to transport material to Antarctica and Argentine UN troops worldwide. Hope people want to start talk about serious things and interesting facts, not crap talk.

    Cheers.

Well, we all know that the Philippines have shown interest in almost every type of aircraft in the past 20 years….. but never bought one. So I am pretty sure….. another “wishfull thinking” here again

    [QUOTE=Tempest414;2041213]

Thankfully there are saner heads in argentina that realize buying an outdated plane known for its horrid maintenance record, a plane whose spare parts would be costly and hard to comeby, if far from a sane purchase for argentina.

Mirage F-1 is far from having poor availability in Exercise Frisian Flag 2013 it had the best availability of all types sent other types sent M2K – F-16 – Gripen. As Wilhelm has pointed out you keep going on about the F-1’s poor maintenance but its service record stands for it self do you think if you keep saying it it will come true

Amen! Well said Tempest414. The Mirage F.1 does have good maintenance record. Ask the French and Spanish maintenance crew…. the F.1 is a reliable aircraft and perfrom well, even nowadays.

    Silly us.

No military aviation branch in Argentina operates any Chinese aircraft.

    Like the Z-11…

Well….. keep silent when you do not know any fact! There is NO single Z-11 flying in whatever air arm of the Argentine military, not with AF, not the Army and not the Navy! Only one Z-11 is flying in the civil colours for test purpose with the Argentine FAdeA factory. Actually…. the army refused to buy this helicopter and opted for 20 surplus Italian Carabinieri AB.206 helicopters! So….. nothing Chinese with the Argentina armed forces SIR!!!!!

    Ciao

Apologies but Argentina is reported by Janes and others as negotiating to buy the fc1. So I hope ypu won’t think we are off topic…

If there is one source that is unreliable in such news…. then it is Janes. In the past they have mentioned every rumour as news….. they never came with official statements (in case of Argentina).
