Madagascar AF Alouette II
I found this very nice picture of one of four former Belgium Army Alouette II delivered to Madagascar in 2011. Any more details welcome.

Hey Sintra…. love that place 😀 You are so right….. the F-16’s will soldier on untill 2025 – 2030; after that the most likely option is to get from US surplus (firts generation?) F-35s.
About the SAR and maritime patrol the Portuguese Air Force has a very modern equipment with the newly delivered C-295, EH.101 and our former Dutch P-3C Orions
The only thing that should be replaced in next years are those ageing but hardworking Alouette IIIs and…. Alpha Jets. With the Correans likely to come to BA11 Beja, that later problem could be solved by using the T-50’s (as I understand some will operate with FAP unit ESQ103)….
Also…. the choice to buy C-390 from Brazil is good; Portuguese economy will benefit from that project.
A big hug….

Thanks “Get It” for your serious reply….. to the others; the Portuguese do have a very proffesional air force and they are very dedicated to their job…. even if it is small and with current budget. A little more respect for this nation… with such large military aviation history.
Amen.
Cheers to all

Italy is not broke, like Japan we have a big debt but we are also able to pay it, the new governemt is tightening the belt but we will make it.
Talking about future projects:
– F35:There are a lot of pressure to quit or partially reduce the program, but since the second FACO will be in Italy (and is in construction) it is unlikely to happen
– AEW: It is one of the capability Italy is missing and it is linked with the sale of M346 to Israel, we just need to see what the Koreans put on the table. No other major projects on the way, we need also to remember that we have a lots of troops overseas, more than 4’000 in Afghanistan, 1’000 in Lebanon and we have just dropped more than 700 bombs in Libya.
Regards
I agree with you on that Glanini….. sure there will be cuts and less to spent… but AMI will also continue to get modernised with new equipment, one of them is their own AEW capability and, of course, the introduction of the F-35. Have a nice week-end.

The S.311 (or M.311?) will never come into AMI, as they already have a excellent fleet of SF.260 and MB339…. with some M.346 adding soon.
I think the future will indeed see some Boeing P-8 (but I expect beyond 2018) to have a serious Br.1150 replacement…..
As for the AEW/SIGINT….. I think that Israëli offer is the best one (and likely the cheapest for now).

The last five BR-1150s in service will be replaced by four ATR-72MP (not ASW) while two, maybe four, G550s CAEW are to be contractualized if T-346 will be chosen by HHA (israeli air force) as its new LIFT.
Grazzi Austere :),
I am surprised to read that “only” four ATR-72MP will be bought toreplace the Atlantic? Are the supplementing the Br.1150? So, after all… there will be no more ASW capabillity within the Italian AF (or Navy for this part)?
I think the G550’s should be the right platform for the Italians…. great looking and impressive aircraft. I know the IDF/AF officials prefered the M.346 above the Korean T-50. Hope that the order will follow soon.
Many thanks for reply.

At least in JDW they claimed that the whole jordanian planes were in such a bad shape, that just one arrived flyworthy to Kenya.
JDW sucks (sorry for that)….. I was visiting Nairobi in august 2011 and noted 3 F-5’s flying, all former Jordanian samples. So….. at least 3 are available from that Jordanian batch. According to a source in Kenya, the KAF still has four F-5 Tigers operational from the first batch…. but I have no idea how concrete that source is of course. One thing is well known, they still have enough flying to maintain a modest unit.
No idea about the Hawks, haven’t seen them since 2006!

Argentina is not a possible customer for Gripen NG. The British content is too high, e.g. the radar.
NOT true, I have been in contact with the Swedish salesman for Latin Americas, and he told me that the Argentines did have looked at possible transfer of Gripen (surplus JAS-39A/B) together with two SAAB 340 AEW. Nothing was said that UK might block a possible deal. No sense talk.
Cheers
That’s good news for SAAB and Switzerland, the news was not a surprise to me… i already expected that Gripen was the best choice for the F-5 replacement. One thing I like to see; if my memory serves me well, Sweden once opted the idea to buy PC-21 trainers as Swiss choose the Gripen? That would be nice too 🙂
Cheers
Well…. fact is that the Brazilian AF wants the Gripen NG (the official report stated that this aircraft was the preffered choice)….. but politics wants the Rafale. As always, it is what the politicians that decide what is best…. not the experts who have to work with the material 🙁
So, I am afraid, they will opt for Rafale.

Cavalier developed the WW2 P-51 Mustang into a turbo-prop COIN aircraft in 1968, then sold the design to Piper, which designated it the Piper PA-48 Enforcer. I imagine it was originally punted as a solution for use in Vietnam.
It was still marketed as late as the 1980’s, and was evaluated at one stage by the USAF.
Of course, it is debatable whether a WW2 would be the same aircraft due to different construction techniques used today, as well as the compulsive urge of engineers to redesign everything over again.
It was mainly evaluated by USAF because the idea was to get them into Central Americas (El Salvador, Honduras etc.) for fighting the leftist rebels there and against the Sandinistas. The idea was cancelled because at the same time the USAF was withdrawn their fleet of A-37’s and O-2’s….. which became surplus and transferred to the countries mentioned.
cheers.
Thanks guys for the anwers. I think that the ECM role is a very important one in KNL, so they will continue do so….. perhaps they will be replaced one time by more newer samples of the Falcon series.
A little off topic perhaps, but still Norwegian AF related, I remember that back in late 1980’s (or perhaps early ’90’s) the KNL was seriously considdered the BAe Hawk. I don’t exactly where I read that, but perhaps in one of those very early AFM magazine. Any one from the Norway historians knows more?
Cheers,

By the way; I noticed that a totall number of Pucará with new up-grades will be 36! That mean that several stored and withdrawn samples must be re-activated. Perhaps some of the not finnished airframes still stored at the Factory???
Saludos
I’ll post it here when I get the proper autorization. Hornets or SuperHornets have been on the offer table 4 times after making MNNA in 1997 now.
VERY interesting to read this, also about that offer including up to 8 C-130’s, something that FAA needs urgently.
I have been in Argentina many times, and have good relations with both Aviación Naval and Fuerza Aéres (thanks to my Malvinas tattoo… and the patches I have designed for EA32 and G5C);)
Besides all questions in the “future fighter” topic, I would like to know if you are sure that after the modernisation of the SUE the CoAN will continue flying jets? If so, then Super Hornet is the most obvious one.
Also, what will be the future of Carrier born anti submarine? Now the EA2S lost it’s second Turbo Tracker in a landing accident, only 3 remain. Any chance to get more Trackers (surplus from Taiwan, US navy boneyard ones?) or even the S-3 Viking? It would be wise to maintain a full Carrier onboard Wing for the next years, right?
Also, and lot of rumours say so, the possible purchase of Pampa II for the Navy?
last; any news available of more EUROCOPTER Fennec? After the withdrawal of the Alouette III, they only operate a few Fennec, which is, obvious, far too few for such a large navy.
Gracias y abrazo fuerte.

It’s not a roundel, it’s the units crest (patch). A black A-37B silhouette with a typical local bird in front of it, named Quetzal.
