Just to say, credit where credits due, today’s display at Waddington was the best I’ve seen since 558 returned to the display circuit. I’ve always been a critic of the display, but today’s display was fantastic.
Thank you!
There has been some recent talk of order P8’s but there is so much stuff said on the internet that it all needs to be taken with a big pinch of salt!
I also understand that yesterday was the rehearsal and that the final flight in indeed today.
Either way, it’s very sad.
Thank you Mark…
So it’s not a viable business then… To buy wreckage to pay someone to restore it? Am I right in thinking you can buy a spitfire for £1.75m
Hello PP,
I’ve been to Wickenby Wings n Wheels for the last 3 years.
It’s normally a good day out with some interesting aircraft to see… I think that this year is a bit more of a formal airshow although I don’t know that for sure. There has always been some great flying at Wickenby especially with Gerald Cooper putting his aircraft through it’s paces.
To answer your question, I’m sure it will be a great weekend… If you do come down feel free to pop over and say hello… I’m by with the Flights for Life stand at the back of the green hangar!
Hope you have a nice weekend!
Thats very sad news. I’m sorry to hear that.
My thoughts go out to all his friends and family.

Paul,
I’ll see if I can find a gunsight for you in Poland.
Firstly… Thank you all very much for the replies.
ABM. I’m sorry you that that
There’s nothing worse that a fully converted BEAGLE Terrier wearing camouflage and its original military serial masquerading as an old military Auster.
I didn’t think that 927 looked that bad! I mean, the military colour scheme isn’t for everyone, and yes, she is now a beagle terrier, not that Auster T7 she started out as but really… Is it so bad to paint her in military colours? – I’ll let you decide that one, but I guess its a case of ‘each to their own’!
John – Thank you for your kind words re 927. I wont be painting invasions stripes on her! Even in her military days as a T7, the stripes would be inappropriate! However, I was asking as I know on an Auster AOP5 which is soon to return to flight, and the owners want to put invasion stripes on her!
The photos on here of true war time Austers are fantastic… Thank you all.
Chox,
I would just be concerned that if the Vulcan were to spend her final days at Doncaster Robin Hood, then it would be a very sad and end to her.
I don’t think people will generally travel far and wide to visit one aircraft in a visitors centre when you can go to… say… Newark… Still see a Vulcan, and a whole lot more. The beauty of 558 is that she’s live, and could spend her ‘static’ days as a ground runner. I cant imagine the airport authorities wanting crowds of people lining the runway to watch 558 thunder up and down…
Re the storage of aircraft outside… Its not ideal, but there are many people out there showing us that it can be done. Lightnings, Bucs, Victors and Vulcans (to name but a few) are all successfully ground running whilst living outside.
I don’t know. It is only my personal opinion, but I think a life at Finningley after her flying days would be a bad thing all round.
As an asside, at the moment I think she’s spending most of her time at Finningley parked on the main terminal apron… At least thats where she was when I last saw her there! – It was quite interesting to see her parked next to an airbus!
I might get criticised for this, as whilst I could not wait for her return to the air, I have found her post restoration displays to be rather boring and sedate. I understand that this is to preserve engine and airframe life however, I would much rather have seen 2-3 years of full on 70’s/80’s style Vulcan ‘welly’ with some roller landings thrown in as opposed to sedate flypasts and hardly any howl.
Perhaps it is now time for TVOC to pull the stops out display wise, make this her final season, sell/give her back to BAH and retire her back to Bruntingthorpe where she belongs for many years of howling down the runways?
I agree 100% with your post Paul. I have said it on here before… The Vulcan display is boring and sedate. The only part worth watching is the take off (sometimes!)…
My family have a business that has being going to the airshows for the last 20 years. I always remember when 558 flew with the RAF you could leave the stall, stand outside and watch the display and you know that 99% (I think literally 99%!) of the airfield was also watching her. No need to worry about having anything stolen, or any loss in business. It’s not the same any more. I can honestly say I don’t see any drop in business now while 558 displays.
My memory of the vulcan display was the howl, and the feeling inside your stomach when power was applied… You just don’t get that any more.
I’m with Paul… I’d rather see one season ‘proper’ vulcan flying than 3 years of what we’re seeing at the moment.
Just a quick edit in reply to Chox’s post… I REALLY hope they dont retire the aircraft to Finningley… She needs to end her days somewhere that has a good throughput of people… I think Bruntingthorpe or even Elvington would be ideal. This is only my opinion but I cant see Finningley being a long terms home when they only have 6 or 7 flights a day going out of there. If you’ve ever tried to fly out of ‘Robbin Hood, Doncaster Sheffield’ airport then you’ll know just how un user-friendly it is… I dont even think there will be an airport there in 10 years, but thats only my personal opinion.
Just a little bump back to the top!
Can anyone help with possible survivors, or who I can talk to in germany re any excavation of the crash site that may have taken place?
Thank you
Why would you want a seaplane ‘Rivet Joint’ / ELINT aircraft?
Dont confuse the MR2 with the R1… They’re chalk and cheese!
..and the point was?
I thought exactly that… What was the point… to prove something that we already knew?
It was easy watching but I’m not sure what the point was. I’d rather watch a good documentary on 617 Sqn / the actual raid.
