Does anyone know the purpose of her visit?
I’m currently ‘dog sitting’ at a house on the old airfield!
I’d like to try and find some war time photos, showing th airfield layout. Some of the internet aerial photography sites show the staining on the ground of where the old runways used to run (and of course some of the actual runways are still present), bit it would be nice to see a map of the site, or a good aerial photograph.
Thought £15 each was a bit steep at the May event.
Really? I doubt you can even start a Lightning for less than £15, not to mention the other aircraft that take part. Each to their own, but I think £15 is great value for money.
expensive for what they are.
Do you really think that?
Thunderbird,
Thank you very much. Thats really interesting. I was aware of the document relating to wind tunnel tests, and was planning to go to London next Saturday to view it, however, the other documents are new to me. I’ll view them too while I’m at the archives. Thanks.
Also interesting what you said about landing being like a high Speed kangaroo 😮 I hope to be able to confirm that one day!
The pilot too is a factor. For example Kevin Rumens seems to be a tad more aggressive than Martin Withers when displaying the Vulcan, as the Sat/Sun displays at Fairford show.
Hurn, it was only Kevins take off that was more ‘aggressive’ at Fairford. The rest of the display was the usual Vulcan display… Slow and rather uninspiring. More like a large glider than a heavy bomber. What stuck me on both days at Fairford is just how quiet the display is. The vulcan is all about Power and noise… You only hear the aircraft a couple of times during the show… As for power… Well, it’s just not there any more. I remember when you used to ‘feel’ the Vulcan during her display. Now you can barely heir her, let along feel her! It’s just not the same. Oh well, at the least the take off is worth watching!
I’m hoping that if I continue to add to this thread, someone ‘new’ might just stumble across it, and add some more info!
I’ve just taken delivery of the article that appeared in April 1990 edition of aeroplane monthly. Interesting to read that the aircraft was steel tube construction with a ply wood covering.
By chance last week a photo of said machine on ebay, from a seller in the USA…I got outbid!
..item no 270415115688, still possible to nick a low-res scan if you search the completed listings!
Like I said, I’m sorry you were outbid! If you’d like a high rez scan let me know and I’ll sort one for you!
It’s nice to see her from a different perspective / angle.

Does anyone reading this have any knowledge with the LAA? Suppose I were to build a full size Hillson, what would I need to do inorder to be able to fly it?
Thank you.
Kevin Rumens, I understand that you were the captain of 558 for Sundays display at RIAT…. Well, can I just say a big THANK YOU. I’ve been waiting to see a ‘proper’ Vulcan display since she returned to the skies, and that Take Off on Sunday was exactly what I was waiting for. Thanks.
It was awesome.
John, Sir, I have thought long and hard about what to write here, as your sudden departure from this earth has saddened me deeply. Although we never met, I feel deeply upset by the news of your loss, and write this message the a tear in my eye. I had the great privilege of looking after your aircraft on Sunday. I say looking after her… I took the covers off and wrapped her up again on Sunday evening… It’s not really much, but I felt privileged to be given the job. What a beautiful aircraft.
You’ll have reached your destination by now, where the beer is cold, the avgas is free and the sun always shines… Fly with the eagles sir, and rest in piece.
Yours truly.
Mark
VX927 – regarding the ‘respect’ comment, it was intended as a lighthearted aside. Management/civil service speak often seems to use such phrases as a way of politely meaning the opposite of what they say. No offence was intended, and if offence was taken, I apologise.
How did you know that I was a Civil Servant?!!!:D
No offence taken!
and to those who say she doesn’t look right well it’s fine to criticise, maybe you should try putting in all the hard work and time spent lovingly preparing and then the nights when even our fourteen year old son and ourselves didn’t get to bed till gone midnight, on one of your own!
Yep… do that on a regular basis… Now can I comment on the finish?
We did what we thought was right for the Aircraft and we worked damn hard to be able to show her to the many genuine Lightning enthusiasts at the airshow and we think she looks fantastic. As for being shiny well yes she is but she is a display aircraft not an operational aircraft any longer. When you go out on a special occasion you don’t leave your working clothes on do you?
Oh I see… Special occasion. You should ave put her in a little pink number then…
I’m sorry for the sarcasm Lesley, but why are you so defensive about 770? The guy who asked about how you come to own 770… It’s a perfectly sensible question…
NO ONE on here is trying to take away from you what’s been achieved with 770… Personally, I’m just saying that I dont like the finish. That doesn’t mean that I dont congratulate you for the achievement… I just dont like the gloss… So what. Some people dont like my aircraft. Get over it!
Well done to the LPG!
Quite so – just because a number of people at the show have discussed the matter with you on a personal level (and not, I am sure, expecting to be quoted on a public forum), does not reflect the official stance.
Bruce
Bruce,
I do take on board what you’re saying, but when the public go the Vulcan Village, or the aircraft, and talk to someone who is standing their representing TVOC, then they expect to hear TVOC’s stance on it. It’s somewhat different if we’re talking about a conversation over a pint down the local, but these people were dressed in uniform, representing TVOC.
Regardless of what the press releases say, when people at TVOC were blaming the CAA and Marshals. In fact, I even think at one point BAE Systems were blamed for not allowing access to 903
ie, with no respect whatsoever:D
You’re very presumptuous aren’t you?!
Actually, it was said with respect – I was simply making you aware of a few facts that you clearly weren’t aware of!
Whilst individuals may have expressed their private point of view to you personally, all the official statements from VTST that I heard on Saturday either over the Waddington PA or Airshow/local radio, and the statements on their website have been very careful not to sling mud.
I wasn’t there on Sunday, so can’t comment on what Rlangham heard.
Individuals, working for TVOC, have to express the view of TVOC as they are the public face. If they blame Marshals (which they did), then as far as the public are concerned, it’s Marshals fault. When ground crew stand under the wing of 558, and tell Mr and Mrs Smith, that it’s the CAA’s fault (again, which they did), then it’s the CAA’s fault…
What TVOC should have done was get all it’s representatives together, and brief them on what the party line was going to be, instead of having a bunch of Mavericks going off blaming every Tom, Dick and Harry apart from themselves. This is one of the reasons I believe Dr Plemming should stand down. Not only because of the on going errors that surround 558, but the constant failure to manage the team.
It appears to me that there is probably fault on all sides in this.
Perhaps you’d like to enlighten us on this. If we assume that all parties means TVOC, CAA and Marshals, then maybe you can tell us who you think has done what wrong? – Maybe then we can all learn from the mistakes.
Be Fair!!!! VTST/TVOC, Marshalls and the CAA have not entered into blaming anyone.
With the greatest of respect Plough, TVOC are appointing blame, I know that because they told me. Separate members of TVOC / 558 that I spoke to during my 3 days at Waddington blamed both Marshals and the CAA for the permit not being renewed on time. That’s not rumour… It’s a FACT
