4 minutes… What took so long!
Joking aside, thank you very much. That exactly what I was looking for.
To be honest, in this day and age you have to give her some credit for that. few people are upfront these days
Actually, I dont. It’s just my opinion, but I think her posts have been quite rude so far.
You dont mix your words do you!…
Yes, yes and yes! Point is, unless people like Waddington go back to the MoD/RAF and start saying that the show isn’t serving any useful purpose, how will things ever change? Assuming that they’d even want anything to change, that is.
There by lies the problem… You dont think the show is working in it’s current format, because of the layout… Hotdog stands on tents. We’ve already been told by eng007 that there are changes afoot this year into the layout of the show.
But the fact is, the kids don’t care if there’s a hot dog stand next to the aircraft… They’re there for a fun day out. It sounds to me like airshows aren’t for you Chox… You need to find yourself a few good photo calls. I mean that with all sincerity. Airshows aren’t just about having aircraft in a good photogenic setting. It’s the whole package that makes the day.
It’s just a difference of opinions, but I wouldn’t say that because the current set up isn’t to your taste, that means the show isn’t working. And I certainly don’t want the organisers to go to the MOD and say the show serves no purpose… All that will do is give them an excuse to cut the few flying acts that remain!
I honestly don’t understand all this.
If the criticism here is that the RAF’s premier air show (Waddington) is lacking RAF assents then just look at the list of aircraft that are down to attend? I would write them all, but it’s easier to list those that aren’t going to be there…
C130 (Austria is down to send one)
C17
Tornado F3
Seaking (Boscombe Down are sending one)
So, the only main stream RAF assets that you wont see in one form or another is a C17, and a Tornado F3. Personally, I would think that an F3 will turn up, so really, we’re getting upset about a C17.
The lack of RAF flying is nothing to do with the airshow office… They don’t choose what flies and what doesn’t… The MOD does that long before the aircraft appear on Waddington’s web site (surely you guys who are criticising the airshow office know this already?).
As for how well the airshow would do without the Vulcan… as great as it is to see the old girl, the airshow would do just fine… It’s survived for many years ‘pre Vulcan’ and will survive for many years ‘post Vulcan’…
Chox,
I have to agree moreoil… I also think they’re being a little harsh on the airshow organisers, who quite clearly want to improve the show. I actually think that what you are proposing, sounds quite boring, and isn’t what I go to an airshow for. If I want to see aircraft taking off and recovering, then I’ll go to one of the free RAF viewing enclosures, not pay to go to an airshow.
As for the show not inspiring youngsters… The Red Arrows, Team Orlic and the Patrouille de France, not to mention the Blades, The Breitling Jet Team, and of course… The Vulcan… Please dont tell me that this doesn’t inspire youngsters, because I know it does.
The only one thing I would suggest to Waddington if they were wanting to attract some more exotic types would be to try and have a theme each year that attracts these types. maybe next year can be something like ‘The Polish Airmen of Lincolnshire’, or the 70th Anniversary of 303 Squadron. this might encourage the Polish Air Force to send a large contingent over to the show… (although their efforts this year should already be applauded!) A Polish Mig 29, F16 and C130… That would keep some of the spotters quiet!
Or perhaps a heavy bomber theme now that the Vulcan is flying again… See if the Russians would be willing to attend again. Can you imagine seeing a Bear parked next to the Vulcan at the end of Waddingtons runway.
But even if that doesn’t happen, I think Waddington haven’t got it too far wrong. The show is designed to appeal the masses, and thats exactly what it does… Mr and Mrs Smith, take little Johnny for a day out… He has a great time, and everyone goes home happy (Apart from the spotters who are hacked off with 927 and Moreoil because their Auster and Yak took up space that could have been filled by F16’s)
We have been invited by 5 Sqd to pitch our stall next to her however
I’ll bring the beer!
Lightninglady – I thought that 770 was owned by the people of Grimsby? Are you the actual owner of the aircraft, did you just house her for a number of years? I mean nothing bad by that… It’s just a question?
I’m not sure what the relevance to your LPG comments are? Why would they want to be in contact with you? Again, I dont mean that disrespectfully, but you almost sound ‘angry’ with them (and with the ‘mad’ smiley face I suspect you are!). She may have a full cockpit, but she certainly looks pretty empty when you look at her from the back end when I saw her a few weeks ago, and I struggle to believe that she has no corrosion… If indeed she is corrosion free, then perhaps you can share your wisdom with us all as to how you kept her from corrosion whilst still keeping her outside without cover?
Anyway, nice to see her with 5Sqn once more… I’m sure they will take good care of her!
You’re not quite right there Rob… The ‘AOP11’ you talk about isn’t really an AOP11. There was only one AOP11 made, and you’re right… That crashed in 2007.
WZ711 was given the title E3 by the CAA, but it’s really just a modified AOP9. The aircraft belonged to Capt. Mike Somerton-Rayner. He converted the aircraft into the E3. Following his death, the aircraft sat in a hangar at Middle Wallop until it was sold (about) 5 years ago.
BenyBoy… I’m not offended. I’m just defending the staff at Waddington because I know how hard they try, and I’m sure they’re as frustrated as the rest of us when they get let down. However, a question for you all… How many have tried to organise an airshow? Do you know, in the past I’ve struggled to get 6 Austers together to attend Waddington, and 2 of them were flown in be me or my family! For the first few years when Austers were invited to the show, I organised it (Austers only!), and it was very very difficult… For the last few years my old man has been the point of contact, but I know he’s had similar problems… I thought that people would be queuing up to take their aircraft into the show, but apparently not. I take my hat off to airshow organisers… It’s not as easy as I thought!
BenyBoy – When you get to the show, come and introduce yourself! I think the Auster you’re talking about may well be G-AOIY… It’s a J5 maodified with a lycoming engine… She lives down in Devon at Eggesford.
I have to agree with many of the posts on here, but I will say is, I don’t believe that this is the fault of the RAF Waddington airshow organisers… They try their best to the aircraft for us, but if the air forces aren’t prepared to release them, then what can they do? Credit where credit is due, they have put on some fantastic displays in the past.
What disappoints me is that the RAF don’t support the show better… Look at RIAT and you’ll see one of just about every RAF aircraft… VC10’s, Tristar’s C17’s etc etc… Then when it comes to Waddington, none of these aircraft are available. Shame on you RAF!!!!
But still, the Polish air Force will be there this year… And in the past we’ve had the Indian’s, Singapore, Greek… B1’s, B52’s, Thunderbirds and Migs (to name but a few)… It’s not bad really when you look at it like that.
As for filling it out with civy aircraft… Well, there has to be a balance doesn’t there… Mr and Mrs average want a day out, and I’m sure they would rather look at my Auster, than an empty gap in a long flight line. If I’m wrong, please let me know and I’ll not bother taking 927 over this year?!!
Personally I’m looking forward to see the AN2 flying!
In my humble opinion the show is getting worse year on year – Static filled with any old airframes willing to attend :diablo:…….Waiting to get shot down !!!!
Not going to shoot you down, but curious to know what you mean by ‘any old airframes’?
I think it’s a sad that the RAF dont give the show more support…
Not the best line up considering some of the aircraft in the static park (German F4) but I will still be there.
I just go for the fantastic 3 hr tour of South Yorkshire I get each way from my local coach company !
I’m not sure what you mean by that… I would have thought that a German F4 was a good addition to the static?
Thank you very much.
I’m out the country at the moment, but as soon as I return (next week), I shall drop you a line.
As a part owner of what will be Europe’s only flying PT26 cornell, I can tell you, I’m very much looking forward to seeing your 19 grace the skies.
Can you tel us what events she will be attending?
If you fancy a day out 20th 21st June, then it would be great to see her at Wickenby’s wings n’ wheels fly in (Lincolnshire). Free hog roast on me for anyone arriving in a PT19!
I’ve just been reading through the engineering updates on the TVOC web site. Nice to see things are progressing well with the aircraft. Does anyone have any idea when she’ll be ready for her air test?
Interesting that they thought some of the corrosion was caused by salt from sea side displays… Perhapse she needs a good wash down after these shows in future?
