I like the idea of Scampton but will there be enough of a volunteer interest at that location to work on her?
Absolutely no idea about that Peter… It’s a valid point, but I was working more on the pretence that the priority was to get the aircraft under cover.
You might be right about volunteers, but then again, given that most of the RAF is stationed in Lincolnshire, there may well be plenty of people willing to help.
Newark has a good record for caring for its outdoor exhibits.
Scampton is a nice idea, but there would need to be some security of tenure. My worry there is that it could get kicked out at very short notice.
Bruce
I will ask the question about Scampton, and will report back asap! Even if scampton remains open (which I’m SURE it will), I cant imagine them expanding to the point where they need 4 aircraft hangars!
Bruce,
It’s just a thought, but do you think there is any merit in asking if there would be storage space at Scampton? I know that the small museum here has moved into one of the hangars (I notice there is now a lightning cockpit in there). Even if the aircraft couldn’t be re assembled there, I wonder if room could be found to store it, and perhaps carry out restoration work in it’s component sections? There is plenty of room here and she would / could be under cover. I wonder if she could remain as RAF asset, ‘care of’ a civilian group? If you think there is any merit in this, then I would be happy to ask the question.
320… Just out of interest, will you paint the shed at Brunty in the same camouflage it wore at Wattisham?
Mmm, how stupid do I feel now?!!!!! 23:40 when I wrote that… Think I must have already been half asleep!
XV208 snapped during engine test 22nd Oct 08
Sorry… But what snapped??
Poor Caroline having to put up with that rubbish, aren’t there other, unused airfields that they could waste their time and their hideous amounts of money on, or, no doubt DX was rightly earning a bit of dosh for putting up with it, despite it’s affect on their dodgey runway. No doubt those morons on Top Gear had something to do with it.
Sorry, F1 and it’s wierd entourage, as far as I’m concerned, genuine car racing finished in the 50’s, don’t inflict your modern cr@p on our much beloved airfield, you should be ashamed of yourselves IWM for allowing it to happen, especially in front of the paying public.
WEEEE WEEEE WEEEE, just the sort of thing you want to hear when you’re wandering about the hallowed hangars, even worse when a Spitty is about to take off.
Victor Meldrew
Dont hold back Pete!
While it may not be your cup of tea, I think your average Duxford visitor would be very greatfull to experience the sight and sound of a genuine F1 car… I know I would!
IWM… Absolutely no need to be ashamed of yourselves at all… Especially if it helps bring in a bit of extra revenue.
Seems they won’t let it fly in the UK 🙁
Ah… I thought that had been resolved… At least as far as 885 is concerned?
With such a low houred good FI time remaining airframe, surely it would be interesting to South Africa?
Or to HHA at Scampton?
Is there anything else on your wish list?…. Non American?!!!!!!
Yorkie,
I once brought back a number of A7 parts from one of the Scrap yards that surround the bone yard in Tucson. I can probably dig out a few contact details for you, but my experience was that they dont really like sending this stuff abroad, and I dont think they would have let me take a complete airframe if I’d wanted one! The scrap yards come under heavy scrutiny by the US officials… Some had a permanent USAF presence ensuring the aircraft were shredded and not sold on… I could have bought as many B52 jigsaw puzzles as I’d wanted… It’s all there, but in 3″ squares!
If I were you, I would try the Greek authorities first.
I’m not arguing anything, I just made a remark based on the way governments generally think. Why fund a service from public money if a private company will be providing the same service. I hope there never is a funding cut that harms the BBMF’s operation.
Sorry Dave, I didn’t mean argument in that sense… I meant more if that ‘theory’ were true then….
No offense meant… I know you weren’t making an argument!
I think of all the aircraft currently on the RAF’s inventory, the Lancaster is one of the most secure…
On a personal note, I’d really like to see Just Jane fly again, and I hope it happens!
That’s bound to happen if a private company gets a Lancaster onto the airshow circuit.
If thats the case then why do the BBMF have a great number of Spitfires and Hurricanes? If your argument were true, then the BBMF would have been re branded as the Bomber command memorial flight and would consist of one aircraft… The Lancaster!
However, do airshows and events have to pay the BBMF for their displays? Being part of the RAF my guess is no. So would they pay for a private Lanc when they can get the free public one?
Nothing about the RAF is free… if you want them at your airshow… YOU PAY!
Even the RAF pay for RAF to display at their shows. By that I mean places like RAF Waddington airshow office will get a bill for the RAF aircraft that display at the show. Back to the Lancaser, if you request fly past while she is en-route to anoher show then I dont think there is any charge for that… Other than that… You pay!
Probably not. The BBMF are very lairy of flying formation with civilians.
Moggy
Unless it’s triangular in shape!!!!!!!!! Joking aside, you’re right… The BBMF are very particular about who they will formate with. It might happen as a one off, but I dont think it would be a regular thing.
I cant see what all the fuss is about. I’m all for using air assets to move kit around, but Coningsby to Hull is a couple of hours… Drive onto the ferry, next morning you’ll in holland… Nip up the road and you’re at Amsterdam… All done at a FRACTION of the cost of bringing a herc up from Lyneham, to Coningsby out to Amsterdam and back.
Everyone knows how stretched the UK transport fleet is… Thats why the Red Arrows have relied on other air forces to send them out to Cyprus. Whats the problem?
