these concepts get more appealing with size. Personally, I would think Boeing would go for a 787 Junior.
the engines are big and move very fast! great for chopping up passengers…….besides them being rather hot. Jettisoning would improve your options, in fact it would become a decent glider if you could trim the cg shift out, if you jettisoned in the air…….the c-shape wingtip would make for a big wingtip joint, and you can do without weight at the wingtip because of the inertial forces generated by gusts………..whilst you may only ever feel 3g max in the fuse, the wing tip can be whipping about at around 14g (IIRC for the 380).
you could improve the escape system by jettisoning the rear end of the fuselage using explosive bolts around a couple of the fuselage frames.
interesting design but I think it is destined for the military as a C-5 replacement when the time comes.
I’ll just wait till it turns up at work on the 10th of june…….
technically possible and a great freighter/tanker/airlifter idea….I would put the certification as the ‘challenging’ point……..how on earth do you get people out of that thing quick enough? on the ground? during a successful ditching? Will people go for a cabin with VERY few windows? will they accept ‘synthetic’ windows?? Another point, given the width of the cabin in a bwb, passengers will experience noticeable acceleration during rolling manouveres, with consequent added tilt………you will be able to look across the cabin in either the up or the down direction………hmm drinks trolleys stowed for that i reckon!! Otherwise flat turns could be SOP…….take ages to go anywhere…..we were talking about this at lunch……the lack of doors would seem to be the show stopper at the moment. If people really want a 1000 seats single class, presumably for the indian and chinese market, the 380 can be stretched for that requirement as far as I know.
goodrich are fairly big in the aviation industry.
I knew there would be a good reason to bank with them!!
nice shots penpusher!
Since it was ‘his’ crew, I expect you would be looking for the pilot?
Another 2 shots of WK608 at Yeovilton, middle of March……..

I generally use the Tv mode, I don’t use M because I don’t have time to fanny around getting the right aperture value for a given shutter speed, so I let the camera decide aperture, and I choose the speed. I also tend to use partial (square with circle) metering. All digital images will need a little tweaking out of the camera, the levels histogram will sort most colour/light problems out.
excellent write-up, I’d love to see the journey home……
great reports! thanks for sharing……….
funny you should say that Airbus has Ferrari’s designers! I know of one Aerodynamics Eng who worked for Ferrari F1!!
I do like the 757, but I also like the 340-600, and the 380 also.
oh, your endearing B based banter of course!! 🙂 😉
happy birthday guys, but, especially you sandy!
I have heard one interesting thing about this at work, but its nowhere near as panicked or actually set in stone as an actual re-design. I love the way journalist step all over the facts (and common sense) to make their point.
In my opinion, this is a fairly arbitrary point all-round because, all BAe really do is stump up the cash to launch a product, and reap the reward, if its not them then it’ll be somebody else.
BAe has obviously been thinking about this for a while, and fair enough, as long as the government keeps the faith then I’m happy. I noticed in an overview I read last week that, for every pound the british government lends Airbus, Airbus pays back THREE. Now thats interest……
