i cant imagine the tornado’s being retired before the F-35 is in place to be honest. i think your right though i cant envisage a scenario were two conformal fuel tanks and a center line tank + the internal fuel would not be enough, surely if it isn’t enough maybe other solutions should be considered to preform the task.

On another point with regards to the rafale and eurofighters engines. would the increase in thrust in the new rafale engine going to effect fuel efficiency? also are there any plans to increase the thrust/efficiency of the EJ2000?

i never said sell at a loss. if they usually sell a plane at 50mil a percentage of that price must logically be profit, otherwise what is the point in making the plane in the first place. if I’m not mistaken Briton is still one of the biggest spenders defence wise, so reducing you profit a percentage to gain potentially large orders makes perfect sense to me. as long as they are not cutting it by such a large amount as to make a loss, they would only be gaining orders that they would not have got otherwise.

from my own viewpoint id rather we didn’t buy off the shelf equipment, but it would still make sense to me that they would see us as a healthy market, i can certainly also see politicians being sold on the idea of us using the same equipment as “our closest ally”.

Obama wasn’t US president back then. He wasn’t even in the US senate until too late to have any influence. Also, what evidence have you seen of big discounts to the UK for OTS US kit? Were our C-17s heavily discounted? Or anything else?

none, which seems strange to me surely we are a ideal market for them? it would make sense to me that they would try to encourage us….

Does anybody know if they are going to be 2D or 3D nozzle? if there 3D would they not be able to upwards and outward to avoid the said part of the rudder and have the same effect ?

now I’m no expert on fighter tactics, so if im spouting bubbles feel free to correct me!

why would the eurofighter go below 20,000 ft if it was preforming air dominance, interception. i though the idea was to gain height over your opponent so you can shoot down rather than shoot up? so in the unlikely event that the two aircraft ever meet in anger and they somehow avoid shooting each other down in bvr what are the odds of the merge being below 20k anyway?

    LmRaptor :

Well , this is debatable .
We already know that the Rafale has better sustained and instantaneous turn rate than the Typhoon in low altitude and/or at Sea level .
It shouldn ‘t change much at medium altitude and high subsonic .
In high altitude and supersonic , the Typhoon ‘s engines should give the fighter more energy and so , a better sustained turn rate .
    At least on paper .

    Cheers .

Tell me how u know that as a fact or is that again a opinion?

after all of obamas “special relationship” talk we may have got them a little cheaper, I’m sure America would love to encourage such relatively big spenders as UK to buy off the shelf more often as well.

Is there something new about the DA5’s LERX ?

    I found this on a blog :
    http://ukarmedforcescommentary.blogspot.com/p/eurofighter-typhoon.html

This story is still very mysterious to me… How did it start ? Why ? What was discovered ? Will the fleet benefit from it ?

isnt that liger who posts on the naval aviation threads blog? im sure he posted a link to it once saying it was…. or maybe im delusional.

infact im pretty sure it is maybe he can expand on it!

EF is already obsolescent and short of funds, Rafale already has a new version in the pipe (2012 entry into service) and the French DGA is looking past 2020 :

Aren’t most of the RAF’s Typhoon’s flown by ex-F3 pilots? A dog-fight is the last place an F3 pilot would want to be, so it’s not surprising (if it was RAF pilots coming up short in one exercise) that they are not up to speed in WVR combat.

Also did this exercise take place before the introduction of the Typhoon Helmet-Mounted Display?

I was thinking along the same lines. i must be a good while since the RAF has had a aircraft that they could consider competitive in the wvr arena.

looking back though the recent history, Tornado, Phantom, Lightning.. no wonder our pilots are not dog fighters. in fact unless we face a attack from the mainland Europe high altitude bvr missile trucks is all that we really require. Surely the only things that can reach us are long range bombers from Russia with the odd SU-27 which with the aide of E-3D should be a relatively easy proposition.

so my point being even if the typhoon could be a capable wvr fighter will much training hours be allocated to the discipline anyway?–

please indulge me if this seems like a stupid question but why is the eurofighter advertised as a agile fighter if every body and her mum can beat it in a WVR fight. and if it struggles in the low speed areas why doesnt it just keep things quick where its supposed to be good?

    @ bluewings!

Just out of curiosity when you say europe do you mean france or am i about to see you give some credit to the typhoon as well ? πŸ˜‰

The MMRCA competition from another perspective :

    http://www.dedefensa.org/article-l_inde_ses_avions_et_le_pakistan_et_les_francais_25_05_2011.html

that is a bit below the belt isnt it! your basically saying that if the Eurofighter wins it is because the british corrupted the indians? fair enough well i’m saying that i expect the french to surrender at any moment! πŸ˜‰ (the diffence being im saying that in jest!)

although i seriously doubt that there will be any corruption in the process the indians have said right from the start that it will not be politically oriented and will be made very transparent to the competitors. but hey if the french want to state that the indians are open to corruption then i can only see that strenghting the case for the eurofighter.

what i’m saying is that it obviously has a low RCS and that is visible fropm at least two points:

1- when facing fighters like the eurofighters it managed to get the lock abnd shoot without them being able to lock and fire back, despite the fact that the eurofighter features a more powerful radar (if its “more powerful radar repeadly can’t lock until too late, then the only explanation would be a lower RCS)

in my opinion that is speculation based on a french pilots claims. i can tell you that i can detect a rafale with a home built radar before it can detect me! does that make it true? if indeed this pilot has ever flow against the typhoon we know nothing of the circumstances.

i’m not trying to suggest the rafale is a bad in anyway infact i think is a great achievement for a single nation the size of france to develop a aircraft of such class. but i will not buy that it is far more advance and superior in every category than the typhoon and gripen, when infact they are likely to be very similar due to the requirements of the projects and time frame of there development.

I personal agree with the second part of your post. i suspect that it has a better rcs than that of a growler, and from what i have read on the rafale it has a very powerful ew suite, i agree i think this is what allowed it to perform these missions.

my point was that there is no proof that it has a better rcs than a typhoon. both aircraft where developed around the same time, both were designed from the outset to have reduced rcs features. i think its rather unfair to describe the typhoon as a supersonic missile platform.
