Charlie,
I think you’re a little wide of the mark here. It’s not pilot availability that’s the issue. The aircraft are owned by the Grey family and Stephen has been very passionate about them over the years. He has nurtured Nick along the same lines, but Nick is very busy with his other work to be trotting across from where he lives to Duxford to fly warbirds for pleasure. Naturally, there is many millions of pounds worth of toys in the TFC fleet, many manhours of effort go into maintaining them and ultimately as they are machines, they need to be used frequently to be reliable. I predict a gradual streamlining, and possible relocation, but that is pure guesswork on my part.
We’ve been blessed and privelidged to see such fine machines up close, and many have taken that for granted (search for things like “too many spitfires” etc), so my advice is to enjoy it whilst you can.
After Stephen Greys standing down from public display flying, I imagine that the collection may well be slimming down a little. Whatever occurs, I wish all involved the very best of luck for the future.
Thank you Mauld. Beautiful.
I so wish I’d seen her fly! I didn’t put many hours in on her, but Snafu was a bit special to me. Bon Chance SNAFU…
Wasn’t it fought so there could be a great film made about it in 1968?
Come on….
Any more news on this one?
Pass the saucer of milk…
Wow!! Axis aircraft are so underrepresented in the UK. I absolutely loved the appearance of the FW 190 at Legends a few years back, equally happy to see Black 6 flying. I hope we see a day where a 262, early and late 109’s, and radial and V12 Fw (or FW) 190’s arrive over airspace into Legends. I know I don’t want much, but I reckon that sight will give me a heart attack!
I’m afraid Buchons painted up as Me109’s don’t quite cut it for me, sorry…
I assume there’s only one FW-189 remaining, and no Blohm und Voss BV141?
The Blenheim looks great. Certainly looks night fighter scheme to me. I wonder if its difficult to paint outdoors in this heat? Bugs, paint drying rapidly etc? Tell us Roobarb…
Correct Graham.
It does seem a little sad that the media need to use “impact” titles so much to grab the publics attention. “Terror in the Skies” anyone?!?
What’s the history of the B-25? Has it been operated as a warbird before? Looks splendid in the buff!
How do you get to build a private hangar on an RAF base then?
You arrive well connected, and offer to share 50% of everything with the local flying club.
Wider ramifications….
Gents,
Please re-read the Fighter Collection news report. Mr Grey is retiring from public displays. If he were retiring from flying completely, I’d be concerned about the excellent guys who work on his collection of aeroplanes and it’d be sad to see such unique types dispersed. TFC is and always has been excellent place to visit and essential for anyone visiting Duxford. There is a few stories I could reel off from my experiences there, but I have shared my insight of TFC before and been told off for doing so, so I’ll keep schtum! I spent a happy 5 years volunteering there, just a day a week. It was great to work on 2 Thunderbolts, the Grumman Cats, Corsair etc and learn that a Mustang is MUCH more maintenance friendly than a Spitfire.
Stephen, thank you. When you strapped on the Bearcat, it knocked the decades away. I always looked forward to ‘The Joker’.
Cheers,
Kurt
