I know that some FIDO is still extant at certain old Lincolnshire bomber bases. As you’d expect with steel tube that has been set alight and left out for over 65 years it’s not in brilliant condition, but still very lengthy.
Kurt
Maybe it should be gifted back to BBMF, from whence it came!

Can’t help you Phil, but what a great nostalgic pic!
I think the wren is a lovely looking plane and if were a pilot, it’d be up there on the list of things to fly!!
How often does it fly at Old Warden??
Hope you and family are well (not seen you since Leg-ends)
Kurt
bump!
Provenance
Wow,
Planes have been rebuilt to fly from worse condition than that…
Will is/has it been recovered? Whats the story???

If memory serves, I think it was XV103, she was scrapped but dont think it was necesarily down to any damaged caused. Quite a few VC-10s have been broken for spares back up in recent years.
I meant to say I didnt think any RAF VC-10s have been lost in crashes or serious accidents;) . In fact I believe very few accidents occured with the type in civie street, I think there was only one accident with fatalities and they were due more to the airfield layout.
It was XR806 and she was scrapped as she slammed down hard enough on her tail to rupture the rear pressure bulkhead. I was nearby at the time. A great shame as she’d just been serviced. It wasn’t long before I was working in Base Hangar too and using bits from her to service other jets.
XV103 was scrapped at St Athen. (and holds fond Vicky Ten memories for me…the first one I flew on!)
Cool links both!
TT, I’d always wondered whether the Shinden actually flew and that footage answered that question. Looks like they had a few prop strike issues… little did they realise that thirty years later (1980’s), bent blades would be all the rage!!!
Brilliant, thanks both.

Oh and said Mustang has invasion markings…. so post 6/6/44
from a visit to CWH on monday, I understand that they have been contacted by the Dam Busters production team with a view to flying over to the UK to perform filming duties, including low passes over the Derwent dam. Hope it comes off. Fingers crossed.
Tosh!

Preceeded by the female presenter claiming that PA474 was ‘the last remaining Lancaster’!
yep… and that the Lanc had received a restoration!
Mickey is no more:(
The Phantom looks bloody good though!
I have to agree with Fluffy on this though…..it’s a shame that we couldn’t wait for the Big Reveal.:o
I’m sure there will be folk within BBMF pretty upset about that.

Top stuff.
A shot of RN201 being recovered from Beauvechain, Belgium, in April 1990.

I’m liking all this matt paintworkthat’s going on at Coningsby at the mo! When it wears a little, this will look better than it does now!

I hate to see gate guards looking unloved and faded…
Peter,
You ought to see what the RAF is like behind the fence…….faded isn’t the word.
Be thankful that there are still individuals who want them there…..there is generally no money to be spared to paint and polish the gate gaurds, or the manpower with any inclination to look after them. Food for thought?
