Cab? Not in my day. A modern term?
Isn’t this the same story pedalled round a few years ago?
Compton Beauchamp maybe? ‘Compton’ is undoubtedly not the correct/full location name.
How do Darts fare after prolonged storage?
I doubt if the engines were properly inhibited, but it might still run.
Darts are tough as old boots: centrifugal compressor and pretty basic. They’d run on creosote I’d imagine.
Mmm. Fair point. The boss does bear a 200HP BHP stamping. My first thought was DH.4 but IIRC that was a 160hp BHP engine. Ditto FE,2b etc.
Mmmm.
It’s from a 200-hp Beardmore Halford Pullinger (BHP) Puma engine: most likely a DH.9.
Great info Bob T,
If Tim Moore is reading this ( or reachable via you ) tell him that I have managed to produce 1400 kg/m3 dense wood composite with fairly simple method ( 2015-2017 ). Wood composite is lot stronger than aluminium…and some even as strong as steel…and 1/6th of the weight.
Wood has been used as a composite in motorsport for many years – the trade name ‘Mallite’ was used in a number of moncoque applications in the same way as it was on the DH Mosquito.
OEB: I think you’ve answered your own question – they are available at TNA: but often hidden in the documents that the OR refers to. In my experience, the OR for (for example) the aircraft that became the RAF Marathon T.1 was in one of the files referring to conversion of mothballed aircraft. Ditto the Dominie and Proctor.
One of the other big aviation event wil be L-Birds back to Normandy, they have around 75 right now.
I saw that too: seems that a lot will be going on and I expect that a lot of warbirds will be doing random trips to the French coast in June.
Well it’s either The Boat or Das Boot…
This site seems to be a good source for most/all on the French side, but not much for UK:
Audax?
I’m not sure that the possible cause of the Tiger Moth accident can be taught-out. It would appear that a very experienced pilot deviated from basic procedure and from instances in the past this would (in those cases at least) seem to be due to a number of reasons which are only becoming apparent in recent times – notably (a) It’s not my aircraft or (b) It’s valuable (monetary or historical).
Neither would have been a consideration during the service life of an aircraft but do seem to be factors nowadays which might cause experienced pilots to make unwise decisions.
Looks like outer wing panel (upper or lower) attach bolt + inner and outer spar.
Has anyone seen any photos of the vandalism? I have been told by someone on the inside that this story is 100% fake.
Funny you should say that – I had also found no real proof that it had happened and was beginning to wonder. I now wonder what purpose it served if it was a fake news item?
