Victor – One is underwater in what’s best described as the equivalent of an Asprin in a glass. Therefore it’s not preserved – it fizzing away at a merry rate. The other machine is on the surface as you note. The age old ‘why didn’t you buy them’ adage is meaningless . I can think of a number of groups who would have liked them but the figures were too high. They are simply not worth that money in the condition they are in. It was a complete waste sinking an F.6 Hunter when there are numerous less worth machines which could have been sunk in their place.

there are always plenty of excuses cant afford etc i dont think that either airframe was expensive and judging by the responses, plenty of latent interest in them so why didnt they buy them? simple answer couldnt be bothered its not meaningless its FACT, for eons so called enthusiasts have complained when a piece of classic air heritage is either sold to dubious sourcesor scrapped after a lenghty debate about its merits bottom line is few people really care enough to make the effort and save said item or get thier hands dirty restoring them , i think youre making a mountain etc with regard to water quickly corroding away the alloy, its a long slow process, ive recovered a few large aviation items from watery sites over the years and not found too much evidence of moisture intrusion into the metals integrity as it were. the condition of the airframes isnt in doubt ,however when will you get the chance to buy any hunter these days, for myself if its in one piece and standing its worth the chance ,ive restored some real basket case projects so i dont speak without experience:cool: 😎 😎

    Hi Victor
Do you remember if it was a 2 seat or single seat glider ?
which country was it registered/based in ?

    good afternoon bazv
i think it was a single seater, although the canopy was quite large there wasnt chance to consider its registration status etc as the speed by which it was disposed outflanked me totally,i just remember that it looked very air correct ,it looked right, old sayimg if it looks right it flys right certainly proved correct in this instance all it needed was the canopy reglazed and it would have looked top shelf ,i remember it wasnt painted just bare burnished alloy i still feel so annoyed about its demise theres too much of this practice goes on in some organisations because certain people arent happy with an aitcraft type ,out it goes to either scrap,or now ebay to await its fate, not good at all people in the movement should be more responsible with their charges and consider futre generations may just want too see the aircraft thats upsetting their various karmas etc.in other words DONT PLAY GOD 😎 😎 😎

hi thanks for the responses further to the description of type,it was similar (only similar) to the glider flown in the original Thomas Crown Affair, similar but not the same as that glider had a clear canopy whereas mine was multi paned or had been as perspex missing sorry i cant be more specific but its over twenty years past:cool: 😎 😎

    hidden aircraft factory

The same idea was applied to the Avro Shadow Factory at Yeadon Near Leeds.it had rural scenes(Fields etc) on the roof complete with dummy cows and they were inspected and touched up regularly(dont go there)it was the largest camoflauging operation carried out over here during the war, also nearby Yeadon Tarn was drained as yeadon featured in the famous Biedecker Tours book 😎 😎 😎

im pleased one is being kept atop(WT799) as it were, everytime something like this occurs in the classic aviation movement there are numerous protestors who argue against their new owners plans etc whatever they are,my response is thus,if they are so concerned about their plight why didnt they buy em themselves? eother wat these aircraft are not going to be axed or cut up in any way both are in one piece albeit missing a few oddments etc for myself im happy they have been put to some use and if WT799 is going to get some paint laid on her great!the owner obviously cares enough doesnt he, lets watch this space:cool: 😎 😎

    NX611

thankyou all for the responses.is there a current airframe status report for NX611 available to view?,prior to undergoing any work I assume she will have been inspected etc, and is there a greater stress placed on an airframe when fast taxing/tail up on grass (as opposed to concrete )undulating surface etc if so NX611 cannot be in bad fettle to carry out these manouvres as ive seen on the numerous videos available,,as to finance well if a fund were put into operation for her restoration to flying status the cash would come in from many sources (and possibly not the UK).ive seen PA474 many times over the years, some before her mid upper was fitted she gives me great pleasure, Nx611 flying would ease up her load and prolong her flying hours ,i see no competion factor at all the very opposite in fact each live quite close so liason would be much easier, if government can waste precious funds on millenium domes NX611s finances are a drop in the ocean, why then whitehall could put its hand in its pocket? why not! 😎 😎 😎

many thanks for the responses,i have alot of respect for a man who managed to initially save NX611 and have her flown fourteen times during his ownership,(getting sponsorship along the way,not easy at any time) it was very disappointing the lavenham museum couldnt come to fruition leaving the squires gate option as the only viable alternative, what happened up there with blackpool corporation(i gather they doubled his rental agreement ) was appaling leaving john roast no other choice than to auction off the reflectair collection rather than have blackpool take over the collection (with the prospect of every tom dick and harriet clambering all over the aircraft willy nilly) it was quite a coup on johns part, NX611 is the luckiest lancaster having survived standing for years outside scampton exposed to the elements. had the lavenham project be successful she,d have remained airworthy probably till today without the need of a respar which is understandable as there was some minimal corrosion found when the RAF dismantled her at squires gate, im digressing from my main aim which is to find john roast, if he has indeed passed away then im sure he will be looking down on NX611 willing her back into the sky, people like Mr Roast are thin on the ground for without dedicated individuals like him the classic aircraft movement would be extinct. 😎 😎

It was there in 1974 ( approximately where you have stated) and could even be seen from the shore on occasion. It was Army Engineers who were diving on it and I was formally involved. The recoveries from the Lake were largely instigated from McGarry’s yard (whom I also interviewed) ,where the Halifax was brought in. The suspected Beaufort in question was actually lost with three crew.- we spoke to the RAF Museum on that one. As I stated explosives were dropped in ’75 to smash the wreck up and we lost interest in it from that point. Thus much evidence may now be gone, however in this case at least, an absence of evidence should not be construed as evidence of absence.
Unless of course I imagined it all. 🙂

    wheres the hali now 😎 😎 😎
