    airfields demise

    all disused world war two airfields in britain should have been preserved(as should every aircraft type) each base made its honourable contribution with aircraft ,crews, ground staff,they were small townships for their brief period of exsistence, and men ,women came served and often died as has been recorded many times and by better people than me, basically these once proud bases are mainly now just rubble or littered with small work units,(where there was unity/ regimentation, now chaos reigns)some are gone with housing/trading estate replacments.(or motorways) it sounds totally absurd to suggest preserving every base, financially its complete suicide,where would the money be found?lets see,, Millemium dome,scottish parliment building,dare i say ,,concorde? TSR2, blue water/streak,etc etc, all these were projects started,and eventually proved to have had money thrown at them with only concorde possibly successful in a small way, had that financial prowess been put into preserving these airfields it would have proved a much better inveatment not to mention the jobs the scheme would have created mostly long term ,plus numerous preservation groups/ societies to administer said airfields, the ones who didnt come home deserve this.:cool: 😎 😎 😎

    Breifly BAE Systems signed a 1.1 billion pound contract in 1996 to develop the MR4A,it will fly at Mach 0.77 have a 6000 mile range ,engines will have 25% more thrust and be 30% more fuel efficient, plus advanced radar etc the contract is for 12 aircraft, completion is 2012 😎 😎 😎

    Thankyou all again for the exellent informative responses, i found the Flight Systems Inc web site after a bit of trawling,its superb chronicling the progess of the company from its inception at Long Beach to today,the aircraft used plus the many mods needed to convert the F86 into drones or target tugs, it lists all the aircraft that were purchased for the programme ,the vast majority were ex USAF with more from Canada and South Africa, however non were forthcomimg from Uk sources which leaves me with the probability that F86 G ATB ex Reflectair, Much Hoole Farm,and Duxford may still be in Britain somewhere as i doubt flight systems would have been prepared to ship the aircraft overseas bearing in mind the glut of airframes in the US and Canada at that time,(1974)Flight Systems chargedthe USAF 1800 dollars for each drone/ Target Tug sortie plus fuel, the program started in the late 1960s continuing on today as already stated, so where is G ATB ?:cool: 😎 😎

    germany was to some degree unlucky having hitler as its wartime leader in as much as, had he been less of a megalamaniac ( and a tad more patient) with the technical advancements in aircraft design on the drawing boards in 1940 and proved and produced in numbers, there would have been time to design a new class of battleship (,rather than having to use the WW1 design in haste) germany could then have declared war in 1942 confident that it had an exellent chance to defeat all of europe easily and with a plentiful suppy of proved aircraft and ships,(both Battleship and Aircraft Carrier) this iview may be simplistic but it could have been so, we were lucky it was hitler in the driving seat and not Albert Speer 😎 😎 😎

    i actually have two of the kellogs airfields stiil unused ive kept them as they are quite detailed and surprisingly well made, you often come across the spitfire models at boot sales 😎 😎 😎

    amazing pictures of the blue streak !thanks for posting them they are exellent most interesting!!:cool: 😎 😎 yes i saw the coast programme that was very good indeed,the facility is Highdown it was built into the chalk cliffs, the programme brought togeather some of the personell who,d worked on the rocket engines, the place celebrated its fiftieth anniversary recently i believe.:cool: 😎 😎

    Amazing model very accurate and done from memory im sure as Bernard lived close to Pocklington( or Barmby Moor as some call it) during the war and used to watch the Haifaxes take off on their sorties plus he witnessed many crashes there ,one in particular involved two haifaxes colliding over the base and crashing quite close to it, the RAf recovered the unfortunate air crews remains and a few days later a chap was walking his dog nearby when it found a human leg stuck in a hedge bottom .obviously the recovery crew had missed it, apparently there was a big inquiry as a result.
    bernard actually showed me the field where the two aircraft ended up it was covered in the familiar blue alloy corrosive dust. and as we passed a dividing hedge he asked me to look in it as he was certain a small fragment of the hali had dropped in there, so i pushed back the branches to find a piece of twisted aluminiun covered in moss just where it had fallen and lain undisturbed for forty years, it felt very strange to see it and realise the tradgedy it had been involved in.bernard had earlier that year in the crash area dug down fourteen feet by hand and recovered one of the halis propeller reduction gear set, recovering it with no lifting tackle quite a feat, hes a remarkable man. another chap i know lived near linton on ouse and he and his mates used to stand on the runways perimeter fence and try to touch the Halifaxes undersides as they laboured to gain take off height! how amazing is that! and this was most evenings when ops were on , what a sight that must have been for those wartime kids

    sorry i thought the aircraft was a complete airframe this wasnt clear in the initial thread and explains the failsworth link id assumed she was intact, so who owned the nose section when it was on display in manchester.:cool: 😎 😎

    Basically he who lives by the sword dies by the sword and thats it! no excuses, all wars are appalling , littered with unfortunate unwarranted tragic mistakes that cost lives of both young and old ,as well as hoards of young warriors (men and women)fighting for their just causes, weather one wants a so called balanced view or not the responsibility for conflicts rests with those who rule/govern,leys not forget either the financial aspects of warfare,factories turning out aircraft and myriad ammounts of armoured fighting vehicles.plus naval shipyards laying keels, and the weapons factories guns, rifles etc etc, all generating millions for their owners ,this can and is a powerful factor in deciding the continuing of hostilities as a ceasation could be expensive, some say this cost Kennedy his life as he wished to end the South East Asia conflict,all wars can be avoided but once in motion all are as guilty as each other ,the duty if you like of any War themed museum or group is to recount the facts both for and against and no more, they should be totally impartial leaving the accusation of right or wrong to the visitor etc, involving PC just complicates the issue for me.black and white facts no more:cool: 😎 😎

    Id heard it was placed on a concrete plinth cast in situ on Much Hoole farm as the undercart wasnt either A intact or B unstable, (i knew a chap who saw the sabre when in the Reflectair Collection and it was a fairly complete aircraft prior to being sold off) , why the farmer would choose to transport it to duxford is beyond me as the cost would have been steep , if it was unsold at duxford (is there a photo of the aircraft),then it probably was disposed of or maybe a local enthusiast fancied their chances who knows ,does anyone?:cool: 😎 😎
