I was lucky enough to get to correspond with Lettice Curtis breifly in th 80s while looking for ATA pilots who’d flown the XII. She’d flown a few of them on delivery flights. EN223, MB832, MB845, MB849, MB855 and MB875.

    Her comments on the XII:

“I have a vivid recollection of the enormous torque of the Mk. XII. When taxying it felt as if at any moment the prop would stop and the aircraft spin round it. ATA pilots were told not to use more then +9 boost for take-off as initially at any rate, at full power not even full left rudder would I believe counteract the swing. I remember how the aircraft ‘lent over’ even whilst taxying and believe this had a marked effect on tyre wear”.

It was nice that she responded to a then young upstart Spit XII fanatic 🙂

October 16, 1943, F/L Clive Gosling brings the last production Spit XII MB882 up close and personal. They don’t get any better then that 🙂

So I decided not to sleep tonite as I took a crack at the P47. Hope you don’t mind. Just having some fun with it. It isn’t weathered yet as it’s the first attempt. Some basic shading etc. Took a bit to get the nose art done.

Comments, criticisms etc. welcome. Only way I learn 🙂

I agree to a point i hate the fact we have no flying Mossie here and the Sunderland gone too but remember nobody here was trying to buy them before they went to the USA.
My point is that if a Aircraft is so special to that country some efforts should be made to keep it there were it belongs, If somebody had tried that for us maybe we would have a Mossie here and Sunderland here where they belong instead of cobweb gathering in the USA, Sadly its a expensive bussiness and money talks sentiments don’t.

I think you need to look at it a bit differently. I’m not adverse to a P38 going to England. White Lightnin is not just any 38. Whether it be it’s connection to the CAF, it’s racing at Reno and it being owned by Lefty Gardner, it’s history is in the US.

There are lots of Spits in the US, but MH434 in my opinion belongs in England, flying out of Duxford. It wouldn’t be right to see it flying here. It’s history is in England. To be honest, when ML417 came over here, I felt the same way. Somehow it just doesn’t seem right.

I for one hope the rumours are false, despite wanting to see a P38 fly again in Europe, I feel that ‘White Lightnin’ is not just another P38, as a racer and display aircraft ‘White Lightnin’ is a piece of aircraft preservation heritage and should be kept in its civillian scheme.

The possible decision to sell the aircraft must have come as a last resort to the family. When I spoke to Lefty a year ago, he was adamant the aircraft would fly again. Both Lefty and his son Ladd had initiated a fund raising campaign to help cover the rebuild costs. Only two months ago I was having discussions with the White Lightnin team about a possible feature to highlight and hopefully help the project along.

I don’t know when the magazine in questions print deadline was, but given that Red Bull have now purchased the Jaguar Formula One team would they have the funding to continue with its historic aircraft fleet, could they afford two ‘bottom less pits’.

    Septic.

Yep, I’m with Septic on this one. White Lightnin leaving the States would be like MH434 leaving England. Just shouldn’t happen. Too much history here.

Rereading Goodbye Darkness, by William Manchester about his wartime experiences as a Marine in the Pacific. Heckuva book.

If you could see the mess I’m sitting in with books all over the place near the computer it would probably scare you 🙂 Norrowa’s 109 book, Battle of Britain Then and Now, a biography of Don Gentile, the 359th FG history, Robertson’s book on the Spitfire, Camoflage and Markings Supermarine Spitfire, GI War by Ralph Martin, Escort to Berlin by Jeff Ethell and Garry Fry, JG26 Photo history by Don Caldwell, Cobras over the Tundra…and those are the ones I can reach from where I’m sitting 🙂

Found in the old Harleyford Publication “The Messerschmitt 109 a Famous German Fighter” by Heinze Nowarra. Published in 1963 so obviously these are older images then the 1972 photo.

It sure seems to be the same bird though, listed as a 109G-10/U4

Caption says being prepared for a US Museum as well.

Does it still count if they’re not British?

Brig General Frederick Castle posthumously won the Medal of Honour flying in a 487th BG B-17G, 44-8444.

Also seem to remember a very nice painting being released just a few months ago by Robert Taylor that depicts Lt Col Gen “Jimmy” Doolittle flying over the Normandy beaches in a P-38 on 6th June ’44 to “see for himself”.

Don’t forget Eisenhower taking his tour in the modified 2 seat P51B “The Stars Look Down” of the 354th FG over the Normandy area

For better or worse, movies like Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, computer games like Medal of Honor, Day of Defeat, flight sims etc, have made WW2 “popular” for lack of a better word.

Items that may have gone to serious collectors, museums etc where the history would be preserved, get bought up by people caught up in the latest fad. 101st Airborne stuff for example is in great demand because of Band of Brothers. All kinds of fakes being sold on E-bay, where they are listed as originals.

Sadly it’s the nature of things when people think they can make some fast money.

Guess I can answer part of my own question. Apparently NX782 was also used in the film “The Dambusters”. And there is some suggestion it was at one time really assigned to 617 carrying codes KC-T

It was V for Victor, the WingCo’s aircraft in Appointment in London.

Wonder what ever became of her

two versions of the same photo. First from Richard Ward’s “Hawker Hurricane in Royal Air Force and Foreign Service”. Second and third from Squadron Signal’s “Hurricane in Action. Captions do the talking 🙂
